I'm a low time taildragger pilot, so I probably over correct and seem uncoordinated anyway, but with the old gear it seemed like every time I landed it was a great adventure between the time that my gear touched and I stopped. The first time I took off with the bush gear I was on edge about how it was going to act, but wheels touched and the aircraft just tracked straight ahead with no problems. With about a dozen landings now on the gear (even some pretty good crosswinds), I can say I am loving it. The aircraft weighs about 5 lbs less now, and lost about 4 mph (the old gear had the wood streamlined struts and fabric). I chose to go with the Highwing LLC gear instead of the Kitfox (McBean) gear for a few reasons. The Kitfox gear comes with a few extras (new axles, white powder coating, etc) but they also have a higher price tag. Since I was trying to reduce cost, it was easier for me to reuse the original axles and wheels and paint them the color I wanted. Lowell and the guys at Highwing completed my order faster than promised, and I was amazed that it all bolted on to my existing mounts without any "persuasion" needed at all. All in all, I couldn't be more pleased. Baby steps. I knew that there was some confusion on the weight when Dick posted his update, so I made sure to do a complete weight and balance before and after the swap. The only change between measurements was the gear including the new brakes lines and everything. I'm not sure how much the wood and fabric on the old gear weighed, but I think you could safely say that the gear themselves are pretty equivalent in weight if not lighter than the original. Can you tell me the difference in the width of the mains. My trailer uses a flat deck that the mains sit on, but I am concerned that the stance may be too wide with the bush gear. So, if you have 6" wide wheels like mine, it is about 78" outside of tire to outside of tire. That is about 16" wider and a couple inches taller than the original. vetdrem wrote: > The gear looks great. > > Can you tell me the difference in the width of the mains. Sorry FD, what is it that you are asking? I don't think the Kitfox Factory wants any pics of my aftermarket gear if that is what you are suggesting.
