The 22000 mf capacitor looks like a d battery in size and shape. =C2-its
wiring is included in the wiring diagram of the VI and later. =C2-Check w
ith John Mcbean or I can scan and send a diagram. =C2-It is wired in para
llel off the voltage regulator as I recall and acts as a noise sink. =C2-
In wiring the Hatz I took a lead off the output of the alternator to the ca
pacitor then to ground. =C2-The Hatz alternator was internally regulated.

Kitfoxers, I am about ready to test fly my KII width 582 and GSC 3 blade
prop. This is a 1990 Kit I bought and started working on last spring.
Question: My horizontal stabilizer has two possible AOA settings, one
places the surface parallel to the horizontal tube in the vertical fin. The
other hole places the leading edge one half inch lower. My build manual
suggests that I start with the lower position for more nose up trim. My
local "expert" says make it parallel. I have the cambered wing. Any
suggestions or advice?

This is a little off topic. What are you doing this weekend Bob. There is
a fathers
day fly-in at Shrevesport (62PA) this weekend. It's only 23nm from 8n7
there will be at least two Kitfoxes and maybe a couple of Avids.
Father's Day 2009 - at Shreveport North. Friday features the legendary
Prime
Rib buffet while Saturday is highlighted by the opening ceremonies including
the
newly introduced "Parade of Sports Cars" featuring an original Stanley
Steamer,
a Model T Ford and a Ford Model A, plus the members of the Pennsylvania
Triumph
Club. This is followed by pilot games and competitions and the kids
favorite
"A Bear from the Air". The Saturday Picnic starts around 4:00 PM and Bingo
is at 6:00. The pool, the volley ball courts and the horseshoe pits are
open all weekend and food is available throughout at the Cross Winds Cafe.
There
are free movies and popcorn on the flightline on Friday and Saturday
evenings
after sundown. As they say down south - "Ya' all come!"
Here is a link to their website http://www.footlightranch.com/
Anyway I'll be there on Sat and would like to meet you.

I have a Kit fox Mod 1 and wish it had two holes to choose from.
I think it depends on where your weight and balance came in.
If it is forward, like mine, I would chose the lower one for more
nose up. Mine varies with speed, slower is hold back pressure, faster,
75 or more, hold forward pressure and trim with flaps.

I have a model II (#490), 509 lbs.,582 w/GSC 3 blade prop.=C2- I built it
with the stablizer in the lower of the two holes and never had a reason to
move it up.=C2- I trim it with the flapperons and always want just a bit
of back pressure during straight & level flight.

The instructions say to use the lower hole...I would follow the
instructions versus the local "expert" who probably ISN'T familiar
with the Kitfox. On my plane I ended up drilling a hole even lower
that the two provided...and I'm still using that same bottom hole,
almost 700 hours later.

I am I new poster and have a few questions in reference to the discussion on
landing gear and bungees. I am seriously considering purchasing an Avid MK 4
with about 160 hours total time. It has Stratus EA81 and lengthened
fuselage. The truss assembly shown in the pics has been bent and obviously
been repaired quite poorly. I have checked with Airdale and they now have a
updated version available from heavier wall 5/8 tubing. Airdale advises they
have supplied about 3 or 4 of these just this spring!
Anyway someone here has stated that this is a most difficult structural
repair to make. Have any of you ever done this and what should I be on the
lookout for. Also can anyone give me an opinion as to what else I should be
suspecting or is this a fairly common failure to this truss.
You comments are WELCOME!!! Hope the pic is OK
Cheers Don

You've got a light engine and prop. The CG is probably
fairly far back. This usually leads to a desire for less negative
incidence on the horizontal. (i.e. parallel) I run my horizontal as
high in the front as I can.

I haven't replaced a bungee truss myself but I have talked with the old Skystar
factory welder that has replaced them in a kitfox.
The welder said it is not a difficult job for someone that knows how to do it.
The thing to watch out for is the fuselage can " flex out of alignment" when the
old truss is cut out and must be "Tweaked" back when welding the new one in.
By the looks of that one the fuselage may already be tweaked.
I would ask Airdale if they have the specifications and method to measure/check
the fuselage.

Ed, this may be apples and oranges as my experience is in a Classic 4. It has
three front horizontal stab mount holes spaced 1/2 inch between each. With the
front stab mount bolt in the top hole it takes a slight one finger back pressure
on the stick to maintain level flight. In the middle hole it takes a slight
one finger foreward pressure to maintain level.
That kitfox is designed to trim the nose down with a little bit of flaps. For
best rigging you are looking for a slight forward pressure on the stick to maintain
level flight. Then you can trim the nose down to level with a little bit
of flaps.
Anyhow it shouldn't be a significant problem to fly with either, you'll just have
to try it and see where it flys best.

I doubt this is the case since you say your plugs are also indicating the difference,
but it could be exasperating the situation. My EGT display went bad and
started indicating 75+ degrees difference. The first test I did was swap wires
from the front and rear exhaust ports. Left needle was higher then the right
before and after the swap so I knew it was the instrument which prevented
me from digging into the carbs (that day at least). Good luck with it.

Not that it matters to me because I did it anyway when I replaced my windshield,
but shouldn't ALL holes be drilled a little larger then the hardware going through
it to allow for expansion and contraction? I think I used a 1/4" bit foe
10-32 hardware and it had about the right wiggle room.

Subject: | Gross weight VS DA |
I am not sure if I just got spoiled learning to fly my KF3 during winter/spring
and then taking a little break or what but here is what I am wondering. The
KF would climb pretty good, about 500+ fpm with 360 pounds of pilots and about
10 gallons when it was cool out, 50-65 F on the ground. I fly out of a field
that is almost always between 500 and 800 feet PA and usually fly 500-1500 agl.
I was down for a while and went flying this weekend when it was about 85 F
and the thing climbed, with the same pilot load and about half the fuel, like
a fat anemic pig. I barely got 300 fpm and it felt like it wanted to fall down
rather then climb. How much does DA cripple this plane? What kind of DA do
you fly at where you still feel like you have good climb authority?
I actually climbed up to 5000 msl and everything handled like I was more accustomed
to although it still didn't climb like the home-sick angel I am used to.
What is "normal" as you go through the seasons with this plane?

James,
I had a good laugh with your post. Try laying off for a
while, then loading to gross to go on a long cross country. I
actually put mine back down once because I was CERTAIN I wasn't
getting full power. Well, I wasn't. (DA + weight =, you know.) After
some reflection and some ground runs I realized I was getting all I
could expect and took off "like a fat anemic pig".
One caveat, however. You have a 582, like I do. I have
noticed that when the DA is up, if I lean before launch I can
sometimes dramatically improve my performance. (I've got HACman.)
Check your EGT's on launch. Make sure they're over 1000F. You may
have to do some re-jetting.
