I'm also a motocrosser from the two-stroke days, but have recently made
the conversion to a CRF450R like nearly everyone else. I have the
advantage of being light--140 wet so perhaps the 582 will work just
fine. I also like the idea that I can do my own rebuild having done
countless bikes and sleds over the years. Have you tried Evans coolant
in your 582. I used it in my 912 powered Pulsar XP and it work well.
Thanks again for your feedback and the contacts.

Lane I am still about 2 weeks away from having mine airborne. I am
rebuilding a mod 3 that was set up for a 912. I was going to install a
912 but found a 100 hr 582 grey head C box FWF for about 1/3 of what a
good used 912 would cost. The 582 is so much lighter that it should out
climb the 912. I am an old 2 stroke dirt bike racer so I am comfortable
with, understand, and like 2 stroke engines. The older lighter KF seem
to me to be a bush plane that I wouldn't relish taking long trips in no
matter what engine it had. If you want to know if the 582's are
acceptable talk with Dave in Canada, Noel in Newfoundland and Lenoard in
Alaska. They are on this web and between the 3 of them have more 582
experience than the rest of the world put together.

Hi Pat, It came with the C box and a GSC ground adjustable three

with it and what kind of performance are you experiencing? Appreciate
your feedback.

I've performed a search regarding engine selection specific to

have a new grey head 582 complete FF setup for my model IV, but am
continuing to research other options. Appreciate any feedback. I've
also been evaluating the Jabiru 2200.

Hey Cecil,
What you want is a harmonic balance puller. It needs to be a good one
with hardened threads.
Then you need to go by a good hardware store and get the bolts to match
the flywheel and the mag ends.
Warning: If you screw the bolts too far into the magneto end you will
ruin the lighting coil.
Also, you will have to brace against the puller itself while tightening
to keep it from rotating. Don't use the crankshaft fixation pin for this
as the torque could tweek the crankshaft off alignment.
Also, buy the Rotax protection mushrooms. I think they are like $20
each but otherwise you will ruin the crankshaft ends.
You can use the exhaust manifold to align the cylinders when you put it
back together. Also watch the length of the 4 bolts that hold the RV
cover in place. If you put the longer bolts in the bottom and start
tightening the bolts will bottom out against the bottom casting and
break off the mounting lug. The bottom casting now has to be welded.
BTW, there is very little inspection that can be done on that
crankshaft. The roller bearings that are in the bottom end of the
connecting rod can only be seen through a small slit. If any damage or
corrosion is in there I doubt you can see it.
Also note that the design of the crank changed in the mid 90's. They
went to a larger journal and bearings in the connecting rod. To allow
for this the bottom of the connecting rod is machined to allow clearance
to the crankcase. The original connecting rod is not machined and
matches the rest of the rod. It was a weaker design.
FWIW,

I want to remove the crankshaft in my 582 grey head C box to inspect it
and replace the seals.
Is there any way to dis assemble the engine without using the specific
rotax
pullers?
They are detailed in the LEAF and CPS catalogs.

Now that there has bee a few sets of these flying for a little while, what is the
verdict?
Would you do it again? Any regrets?

you still need the rotax gear puller for the PTO end to change the seal. I broke
down and bought one for changing the gear ratio on mine.

I caught a glimpse of this rescue on the news as the pilot was hoisted into a helicopter.
I thought it might be a kitfox. Turns out it was an Avid. do not

Looks like it floated pretty well. I wonder if he had installed some floatation
just incase...

My worst fear. The water around here does not let too many people live to tell
the tale. :beerchug: for the guy setting it down without going over and for
being able to get out and well... fly away!
