TITE SEAL is another good product for sealing fuel/oil fittings. We have
used this product for years at our airport and it has never failed to do the
job. It too is available from Spruce. You could have it in 2 days Travis.

Well...Nothing went boom at the airport! [Shocked] I injected some silicone
into the fitting prior to cutting the nipple. All parts were removed without
issue. The finger strainer was clean as a pin! There was a tiny bit of residue
laying under the strainer in the little sump area. No heartburn there!
Today I will complete the mods to the left wing root rib and reconnect the fuel
system on that side. Then, do the right wing.
The header tank has a fitting/plug on the end/side of the tank, near the top.
Was this for the addition of a low fuel sensor? I know there are several available
(I was looking at Murle Williams unit, self contained little can, that sits
on top of the tank). Is there one that just screws into the tank?
Lynn...good story!

Subject: | Fuel line antifreeze |
Isopropyl is used as a dryer in things like brake air lines and fuel for
cars but not close to the concentrations that ethanol is used in gas. A
small bottle of isopropyl is usually enough to treat several gallons of gas.
I wasn't able to find out if there is a phase separation process with
isopropyl as there is with ethanol but on one occasion I had a considerable
quantity of water in my snowmobile tank. The isopropyl didn't help at all
and I'm sure I had it mixed at a very high concentration. The only reason I
even tried the isopropyl is I thought I only had a little water in my tank.
I was wrong. For much smaller quantities of water in the gas isopropyl has
worked many times by many people.
Ethanol will actually remove moisture form air and unfortunately mix it in
with your gas. When it gets cold enough there is the possibility that the
ethanol laden with water will phase separate in your fuel tank. I haven't
found any evidence of this happening with isopropyl. So to answer your
question ethanol will suspend moisture in your fuel as long as it doesn't
get too cold or too concentrated with water.
Long and short of it is if you get into a situation where you think you have
to use antifreeze a low concentration of isopropyl would probably be better
for your engine than ethanol which will under cooling conditions phase
separate if the water concentration is high enough.
Gee I didn't think I could get through that without mentioning the dangers
of flying with... :-)

I know that ethanol and isopropyl are 2 different things, but, does having
ethanol in auto gas prevent water in fuel from freezing like isopropyl does.
In other words, is there still a need for isoprpyl to prevent fuel line and
carb bowl icing.
Note, I am aware of the draw backs of any kind of alcohol in aircraft fuel
so please don't lecture me on that.

Carl,
You're not the first person to do that! :D I have a twist lock, quick drain valve installed on my header tank for draining purposes. This is a link to them: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/curtisquickdv2.php.
I have a Mr. Funnel that I hang off the valve to catch the fuel as it drains.
I have siphoned a few times...but if time allows...prefer to drain through the
header tank.

I have the same opening in my header, Travis, and if memory serves
me, there is a float valve that will screw into this opening, but for
some reason my switch wouldn't work....switch was too long, or
something like that. I do know that you have to be careful screwing
the switch into that opening, so that the float doesn't flop over and
hit something and you break it off inside. I ended up getting the
Williams can, and using my switch. He does sell it as a complete
unit. I see the benefit of having his external can as giving you
about a 2 minute earlier warning than the in-header-tank
version....and I need all the help I can get. : ) There are also
optical sensors available, I've heard.

Lynn, Tell me more about the float switch problems you experienced. I have
one in my header tank, and the damn thing won't work. I pulled it out
checked it with continuty meter. It seemed to work again . I put it back in
and again it doesn't work. The switch is hooked to ground to close and
complete the circuit with power directly to the warning light. The light
stays lit. The circuit is complete all the time. I know I haven't got the
switch in upside down. It has to be a magnetic switch of some kind as the
pivoting float cannot, and does not attach by wire. I think the magnet must
be too weak to work when installed in the tank for some reason.

That's where I have my low fuel sensor. It's a simple teeter-totter
float sensor, probably got from ACS long ago. Check out Highwing LLC.
They also have a sensor and have a better quality reputation than Murle.

FWIW, When I covered my wing I put a U-shaped aluminum reinforcing plate under
the fuel fitting. If I should need to inspect the finger strainer I will be able
to cut the fabric and fabricate a simple cover plate.

Way to go, Dan! It's a great feeling, isn't it, seeing your bird
finally fly? That was the case with my 'fox, as I wasn't even a pilot
yet, and had to enlist others to fly the 40 off. I got a guy who
didn't even have a Kitfox in his "resume" but he knew what he was
doing, and after the 40 was history, he completed my training in
it....and the skies haven't been safe for others since. : )

thanks lowell,
i am thinking of using nylaflo tubing to the pitot , made of alum.
i guess i will have to do a little mix and match to get the alum. fittings
to all fit together.

Why not put the inspection ring in place during the covering job?
Then paint a couple of covers to match that area (stripes, etc), and
you're ready to cut out the fabric and install the cover if need be.

Boy, that IS weird. I'm tempted to think that the torque of screwing
it in somehow causes a "tweak" in the body and it won't make contact
in that configuration. I'm pretty sure that your wiring is the same
as mine....hot to the bulb, and ground through the switch to a good
ground. The only thing I can suggest is to check for "normally open"
or "normally closed", but I'm sure you've done that. The switch
should "connect" when the float drops, as I'm sure you know.

Bob,
The typical material is polyethylene tubing. Check the fittings on the
instruments for fittings and size, mine is 1/4 od. As I recall, with the
simple bent aluminum pitot tube a short length of 1/4" ID tubing is used to
connect the two in the wing. I plan on using some kind of sealant there.
Maybe Fuellube and a couple of nylon wire ties.

Lynn, Torque of installation wasn't enough to hurt the switch. It is a
plastic tank. I have checked everything you mention. I'd like to get another
switch and try it, but I am afraid it wouldn't work either. And, I'm tired
of pulling the damn header tank.

Subject: | Re: N443DM Flies at last |
Dan, Congrats. I'm ready for airworthyness inspection and also have an
experienced pilot to fly my plane. All I need for private license is
checkride. What's your location? Nice to post that. I have met a couple of
local KF pilots by posting my location.
