| Subject: | Shield on magneto wire? Ducati regulator plug wires? |

      Hey guys,

I'm currently un-mounting a Rotax 912 ULS from my Kitfox. I noticed a couple of
annoyances in the process of unconnecting everything ...

The magneto wires on my Kitfox feature a braided coaxial shield. I'm not too enthused
about the way these were handled by the original builder. The shield
is basically bunched together and soldered to a ground wire. One of the solder
joints was hanging on literally by a thread .. so what do you guys recommend
for tying the braided magneto shield to a ground wire? I'm considering bunching
the braid together, applying a dab of solder, then butt splicing to the ground
      wire.

Also, my Ducati regulator plug has wires leading both to the engine and the instrument
panel. It looks like each wire inserted into the plug is terminated in
a female spade lug. However, they can't be pulled back out of the plug .. I'm
guessing there is a plastic locking tab somewhere. Anybody know how to yank
wires out of the Ducati regular plug?

While we're on the subject .. does anybody have advice for unmounting an engine
for the first time? Things to avoid, etc? Thanks!!

      Carl

      hi lowell,
is your ''poly'' tubing soft and flexible, secured with a hose clamp or is
it semi rigid , requiring the compression fittings?
       thanks , bob noffs

      Pat,
I too am using the low fuel warning system provided by Lowell at
_Highwing LLC_ (Highwing LLC) . It is a very nice unit that attaches just above
      the
header tank on the vent line. It is light as a feather and includes a dash
mounted warning light that warns when the header is not filling (giving you
about 15-20 min warning to dry tank) I have had it about a year now and am
      glad to have it!
                                                                         Dick

      Pat,
Wish I had one of those on my Kitfox5 when I my plane ran out of fuel
with both sides showing 3/4 of fuel.
Little off topic but am replacing windshield and side windows. Does
anyone know what thickness on the windshield and the side windows I
should be using? Also what type of material should I use? Will one sheet
      4x8 cover both of these?
      Thanks,

I just let the nylo-seal run without interruption. It has enough bend

Good looking bird! I envy the windsock hanging straight down. Winds here have
been 30+ knots for a week. Had one day that the winds were gusting over 65 knts..
was lifting one float out of the water about 2'. Was darn lucky my buddy
was keeping an eye on my plane for me and moved some pallets of brick down
to the edge of the lake and tied my plane down good... except he got out of the
bob cat he was using to move the pallets and she took a swim LOL. he tied the
plane down, heard a wierd burble burble glug glug and looked around... no bobcat...
then he saw about 3" if the top rack sticking out of the water.... I
told him he shoulda left it there, it would have made a good tie down LOL

      Dan-
It looks (from the picture) like your exhaust pipes protrude through
the lower cowl...it this correct? You might not be aware, but if you
flip flop the muffler, the exhaust pipes will exit right through the
lower cowl rear opening without making nary a cut into the cowl. When
I got my engine, I cut two big holes in the cowl for the pipes then
somebody let me know about the flip flop capability of the muffler.
It sure makes taking the lower cowl off a lot easier.

HI Bob, Mine is slipped over the aluminum pitot tube about 1.5" and
secured with a zip tie. at the ASI it goes inside a 1/4" ID soft clear
fuel type line which bridges between the Black poly line and the ASI
barbed fitting. Zip ties over both. There is no high pressure here, you
are unlikely to ever see even a 1 full PSI over static pressure.

Dick, Thanks for info. Hell, I have a Lowell Fitt trim tab, Lowell Fitt
radiator shutters and a Lowell Fitt bush gear. Might as well make it a
Lowell Fitt sweep and use his header tank fuel warning system too. I haven't
flown mine yet, but that bush gfear is awesome! Lowell was apoligizing for
the fairing fit up. I don't know how you could get it any closer. The
fairing fit up was as close to perfect as possible.

Leroy, I saw a Barnstormer ad from a Staley from MO, can't remermberr 1st
name, looking for an NSI engine. I gave the name and # to a friend of mine
with an engine for sale. That wasn't you, was it? I made my winshield and
cabin top a 2 pieceer with the cabin top tinted and the windshield out of a
softer heavier thicker plastic of somekind, I would be afraid to recommend
the windshield material until it proves it self. Was easy to work with, but
the stressed portion at top corners has stress marks in it already.

If you look inside my lower cowl there are two oblong patches in it
from my repair job. Making mine worse was the fact that the pipes out
of the Jabiru muffler were splayed at an angle, requiring that the
holes be even larger than necessary just to make it through the cowl.
All you have to do is turn the muffler end-for-end, and the pipes
will go "back and down" instead of "down and back". Easier to do than
to explain why. But be sure to support the pipes with a flexible
hanger like an automotive tail pipe hanger, or a stainless steel
cable up to the lower firewall. The unsupported length of those pipes
will vibrate and break off and you don't want that...neither did I,
but it happened to me and I could have had a bad fie as a result, but
I got lucky. So please support those pipes.

      Pat,
Yes your friend called but I haven't had time yet to respond. I just
learned this afternoon that the 5's windshield and the other part behind
this are two pieces. Only need to replace the rear section.
Thanks for your info and response.

Never use solder on any joint that has to endure vibration. The solder
wicks up into the strands of the wire and causes metal fatigue where the
wicking ends. That is what happened on your present wiring.

Places where you can expect vibration (read airplane, car , motorcycle...
Etc..) should be connected using decent crimped on connectors.

Subject: Kitfox-List: Shield on magneto wire? Ducati regulator plug wires?

      Hey guys,

      I'm currently un-mounting a Rotax 912 ULS from my Kitfox. I noticed a
couple of annoyances in the process of unconnecting everything ...

The magneto wires on my Kitfox feature a braided coaxial shield. I'm not
too enthused about the way these were handled by the original builder. The
shield is basically bunched together and soldered to a ground wire. One of
the solder joints was hanging on literally by a thread .. so what do you
guys recommend for tying the braided magneto shield to a ground wire? I'm
considering bunching the braid together, applying a dab of solder, then butt
      splicing to the ground wire.

Also, my Ducati regulator plug has wires leading both to the engine and the
instrument panel. It looks like each wire inserted into the plug is
terminated in a female spade lug. However, they can't be pulled back out of
the plug .. I'm guessing there is a plastic locking tab somewhere. Anybody
know how to yank wires out of the Ducati regular plug?

While we're on the subject .. does anybody have advice for unmounting an
engine for the first time? Things to avoid, etc? Thanks!!

      Carl

I hope you are not so brave to drink ethanol! It is only half as toxic as
Isopropyl. It will do a lot more than dry out your throat. Best to stick
to Scotch :-)... or Rum... or Gin.... or ....

      Oh yes...

Really Noel? Rats, now I understand why, when I open a bottle of moonshine,
I feel so dry in my troath; it dries up the air!
