Subject: | Lead plating (was EGTs are killing me) |
I have read this many times (mostly here and Rotax list) and I'm not
sure this isn't one of those oft retold myths. I understand that lead
compound deposits are bad in the combustion chamber, exactly where
Decalin is working to counteract it but is there any documentented
photographic evidence of this "plating" occurring in the bottom of a two
stroke rotax and actually causing a problem, or a failure?
Rotax doesn't mention bottom end troubles from it that I can find and I
can imagine a couple of small benefits. Colour me skeptical on this one,
but I'd love to see evidence of it.

The Decalin scavenger requires one thing to work. heat. Ie the heat
given off in combustion. That is why it works very well at keeping the
top end and plugs very clean however it does nothing to keep the lower
end and main bearings free of plating. Their own web site, the last
time I was there, only mentioned the top end for that exact reason.

I don't know if I'd worry too much about it. I've run nothing but

Dave,
What are the dimensions on the fiberglass ski's? Mine are 60X 12 and I would not
want anything less. Had them on my buddies Mk IV last week in 40" of new powder.
He had issues in places where I was going with my full lotus floats.
He made it in and out, but a few times we thought it was gonna be snow shoes and
packing the runway to get him up on top.
That being said, I would be interested in the fiberglass ski's is they are large
enough.
Post up some pics with dimensions if you don't mind!

Simple solution is to use reg grade gas.
Our 582s and 912 ul do not need over 87 octane.
Some just wanna be one of the boys buying avgas at the airport ?
No idea But I do operate from my own strip and I have supply her already. In Summer
I buy at marinas and I have bought at airports before from the maintenance
guys that use reg gas for lawnmowers, vehicles etc. I have used AVgas a
few times but it is like 30 % or more expensive as well.

You are way ahead of the game to get away from 100LL in a 2 stroke. Regular auto
gas is much better. The lead over time is a killer. Yes it works, but you'll
have more maint. issues later as you get more time on the engine. This question
is always ask in Rotax maint. schools and Rotax would rather see auto gas,
too.

On the other list I mentioned I had my outboard motror tank submerge several
times when I was a kid. Of course in those days there was lead in the gas
which would not wash out with a bit of water. You are quite rigt that you
will reduce the RON of your gas by removing the ethanol.

Not washing ethanol out of the gas... We don't have ethanol here. But

So here is the new topic on my mind;
First and foremost, has anyone here have any FIRST HAND experience with
washing ethanol out of fuel? I would like to hear about it.
I have read here and on other sites about simply adding water and then
draining off the ethanol free fuel but it just sounds wrong to me.
I am planning on replacing my fuel tanks with E compatible ones but I am not
ready yet because I have not allocated the cash first of all but also I am
still concerned about the down time so I am going to wait until deeper into
winter when I will not be too upset about not flying for a few weeks. When
I first started to run into the issue with no ethanol free fuel in my area I
was told that the plug fouling was the only major issue with 100LL but that
is not sounding like the case right now. I am probably 40 hours into
running straight 100LL and I am wondering if I am putting my engine (and
butt) at risk. So I really need to figure out a solution and preferably by
Saturday.

Ethanol is supposed to have a RON of 116, normal (whatever that is) gas
87 so washed gas mixed 50/50 with 100LL would have a RON of 93.5 with
half the lead of 100LL. Because the 582 doesn=99t require high
octane fuel I=99d use it in fact I think I=99d go to 4:1
washed:100LL and reduce the lead even further.

Wash out ethanol out? Yes Dick, I took a big glass jug. I put exactly 5
gal. in. I poured a measured 1qt. of water. Mixed it up a bit. The next
day I drained out just under 2 ltr.'s of cloudy liquid. It wasn't gas. I
set this on a shelf for a few days. As I walked around the shop, I kept
smelling White Lightning (pure grain alcohol). \
Didn't put the stripped gas in my plane-I dumped it into my truck.
Because I don't know what else I stripped out, I will not fly with it.
To lower the ethanol I cut the mogas with no more than 1/2 100LL and add
seafoam. -'Lion 8'- (Tom)
