Has anyone got an opinion on the Kiev prop on a 912UL in a Kitfox 4 ? I
have seen several Highlanders that use this prop and they all seem happy with
them. It is a beautifully made piece of art, that's for sure. I talked to the
importer yesterday and he said I would gain a few mph in cruise and be able
to slow the idle rpm down to around 1400 rpm on approach thus reducing my
ground roll (kind of acts like a speed brake) The later would certainly be
useful as I have had some problems getting the rpm low enough on approach with
my Warp.
I am just tossing this around in my head and would appreciate any
opinions.

have classes all around the country. Here is the link and the schedule of
upcoming classes:

Be aware that these classes are *only* for the owner of an airplane that
has, or will have, and ELSA Airworthiness Certificate. If you are the
builder of an EAB airplane you don't need to take this course to get your
Repairman's Certificate, just apply for it through your DAR when getting
your airworthiness inspection - he must sign off that you are "knowledgable"

Hey Dick,
I've got a Kiev 183 and spinner for my HKS but it hasn't flown yet. As
you say, they are beautifully made.
I got this prop because it met the inertia requirements of the gearbox
and it has good performance in a Skyranger with the same engine/gearbox.
Also:
http://www.hks-power.co.jp/hks_aviation/Pilots/2009/09217/index.htm
Add speed in cruise? Not sure about that. The Highlander and Skyranger
aren't as fast as a Kitfox. The prop is very light so maybe you can
slow down the idle.
If you really want speed brakes: doesn't a slipper clutch disengage when
the engine gets below some rpm? If so, wouldn't the prop free-wheel to
some rpm based on the airspeed? If true that will create tremendous
drag. That is what happens in a Rotax C gearbox with a clutch
installed. That's why I never wanted one. What would happen to the
engine-out glide ratio?
BTW, what is the lead time now on Kiev props and blades?
Cheers,
Mark Napier

Subject: | Oil Injection reservoir size? |
What size oil injection reservoir are you two stroke people running? I am still
gathering to convert my premix engine.
The rotax installation manual says the oil reservoir should be a minimum of 5%
of the fuel capacity. I have 21 gallon fuel capacity so that works out to a little
over a gallon oil reservoir. That seems like a lot of extra weight if I
filled it up.
The tank I am looking at is 2.5 liters which would be enough oil for about 35 gallons
of fuel.

I assume you mean you're converting from using pre-mix to oil injection.

That seems a little high to me when the engine runs 50:1 (2% oil) and close to
100:1
at low power settings. Maybe they mean 2% of the fuel capacity plus an additional
5%.
So 2% of 21 gallons is 0.42 gallons plus 5% of the 0.42 gallons which is another
0.021
gallons. The total oil then would be 0.42 + 0.021 = 0.441 gallons of oil. A little
under half a gallon. It doesn't seem reasonable to me to size the oil tank for
a 20:1
mix. But then again, I haven't been flying behind one either.

That's well over the minimum required for 21 gallons of fuel assuming it runs 50:1
most of the time. The oil weighs approx 6.8 lbs/gal so half gallon isn't an extreme
weight burden. You'd be carrying that weight anyway if you premixed. It might be
nice
to size the oil tank for a typical round trip so you don't have to carry as much
in
bottles loose in the cockpit. Maybe size the oil tank for some amount of flight
time,
like 6 or 8 hours.

Dick,
-
If my own experience is any indication, neither certification nor obtaining
a repairman's certificate should be a problem. I purchased my model 2 in m
uch the same-state of completion-as this 4 and the FAA was quite happy
to provide me with both. I will concede that the outcome may depend largely
on the documentation that comes with the plane and the individual who does
the inspection, however.

If I could afford a wife and 2 airplanes, I'd jump on this one.

Deke,
-You are right about the controversy but this purchase should be no big d
eal. This is just an experimental amatuar built airplane. If your aim is to
get the airplane then you should have no trouble in getting the airworthin
ess certificate. As mentioned ,projects often go thru many owners before co
mpleted and licensed. Annual condition checks would be signed off by an A&P
(as mine is every year)
-If, however, your aim is to get the repairmans certificate that might be
another story depending on how much completion you did and what qualifies.
