I had a lady from the FAA stop me at the airport earlier this fall and told me the same thing. She said she was going around and telling everyone she could find at the airports because as she understood it, come March or April if you don't have the new certificate, you will have to go back for check rides etc, and the 10s of thousands of hours you may have already is null and void. One would think that not all pilots are on the net and maybe don't fly often, ie flying farmers or those who have taken a few years off. If not for the internet I wouldn't have known nothing about it and, like Paul, I couldn't find anything on the FAA site that addresses losing one's ticket for failure to make the change on time. I suspect that the FAA would have a fire storm of protest if suddenly thousands of people had to get recertified just because they were late. Personally, I suspect that the rumors are bogus and a lot of anecdotal BS is floating around out there. Then again, just in case... I sent mine off today. :-) Deke Morisse Mikado Michigan S5/Subaru/CAP 438+ TT "If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there'd be a shortage of sand." -- Nobel prize-winning economist Milton Friedman (1912-2006) Subject: Kitfox-List: Re: New pilot certificates! Deke, A lot of fiction is floating around surrounding this topic. I thought it best to go to the source. I have a call in to FAA Headquarters and I hop e to have the facts soon. When I get them I'll be sure to post it for eve ryone. I find it hard to believe too, but it was someone who works for the FAA that told me that. I was also told not to throw away the paper cert because all the documentation refers back to it. Guys/Gals, This information is from the AOPA: Plastic certificates On February 28 2008, the FAA released its final rule requiring pilots and airmen to switch from their paper pilot certificates to the new counterfe it resistant plastic certificate. Pilots have until March 31, 2010, and al l other airmen have until March 31, 2013, to convert their certificates in order to continue to exercise their privileges. After the 2010 and 2013 deadlines, pilots and airman who have not converted will have to request and receive a new plastic certificates before exercising their privileges . There is no mention of retesting or flight checks, you won't be able to exercise the privileges of the certificates if they are not of the plasti c variety. Only plastic certificates will be legal and you must have them in your possession. I'm still waiting for more information direct from the FAA, but this is pr etty clear. Agrred we understand you dont lose a thing just cant fly until u get ur plastic In a message dated 1/12/2010 1:49:54 P.M. Central Standard Time, MDKitfox@aol.com writes: Guys/Gals, This information is from the AOPA: Plastic certificates On February 28 2008, the FAA released its _final rule_ (http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20081800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/pdf/E8-3827.p df) requiring pilots and airmen to switch from their paper pilot certificates to the new counterfeit resistant plastic certificate. Pilots have until March 31, 2010, and all other airmen have until March 31, 2013, to convert their certificates in order to continue to exercise their privileges. After the 2010 and 2013 deadlines, pilots and airman who have not converted will have to request and receive a new plastic certificates before exercising their privileges. There is no mention of retesting or flight checks, you won't be able to exercise the privileges of the certificates if they are not of the plastic variety. Only plastic certificates will be legal and you must have them in your possession. I'm still waiting for more information direct from the FAA, but this is pretty clear. was just what the bi.. uh.. lady with the FAA stickers on her car told me. I asked her specifically.. however, that was months ago so at that time she was just getting the word out about what was coming down the line.. the final rule must have been different from what was originally kicked around.. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry aka SNAKE Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 (100 hrs and counting on the rebuild) IVO IFA Full Lotus 1450 #1 snake oil salesman since 1-22-2009 I would rather die trying to live, than to live trying not to die....
