If you don't have the static correct your airspeed can be up to 10 mph off =2C had one customer whose airspeed wouldn't get below 80 mph=2C finally fo und just a slight oil can in front of the static port causing a low pressur e area over the area of the static port. This was on a Zenith 601 about 10 years ago. plane has over 600 hours on it now=2C still flying great. One of the guys at our airport flys a Thundergull with a HKS engine and Kiev prop. He developed a vibration but was never able to find the problem. Two weeks ago while he had the prop and prop-spacer off, I was looking at his parts and noticed the prop-spacer had a large diagonal crack in it. It went almost all the way through the spacer. You could actually pull on each side and make the crack larger...wasn't much left holding it together! Kiev is shipping him a new spacer from Germany (I believe). Hope all is well! My Vixen is back together and should be ready to fly again this week. The transducer has failed again and it is less than 2 months old and less than 8 hrs ! My first one lasted almost a year. This unit is coming out of my panel and a plug installed in its place until I find something nice to put in that hole. I removed the transducer to see what the problem was. The impeller is stuck and I could not get it to move with compressed air or Kroil. I had thought seriously of the the method of getting my prior transducer to turn (a 5 LB sledge hammer) but decided otherwise. In any case, this piece of c--p is free to anyone that wants it, just pay shipping to my PayPal account. Yes, I did install it correctly in the vertical position, right above my gascolator on the firewall. It was a beautiful installation. Anyone know of a nice instrument of about the same size (2 inch) that gives OAT, flight time,etc. I would then be able to remove some unsightly stuff I have stuck to my panel. After pulling the builders log to determine how the flaperons are constructed...I realized there were foam ribs every 12 inches and apparently sealed to the point that nothing would flow from section to section. I drilled a 1/8" hole in each cavity on the bottom of the flaperon. I then sprayed Corrosion-X into each cavity and closed the hole with an aluminum rivet. At least I know most surfaces should be covered. At max capacity I'm running 37 amps. So my stock 60 amp alternator really isn't working all that hard. Couldn't see purchasing a different alternator and it still requires the use of the poorly designed and expensive Continental coupling. I think it is butyrate rubbers that are totally impervious to it's effects. Unfortunately I know of no butyrate that can be sloshed in a tank and give 100% protection. The slightest crack in the sloshed covering can lead to separation of the sloshing compound inside your tanks... another real mess. If you have a gascolator properly installed that is the best place to drain the tanks. Flight planning should leave you with a couple of gallons of fuel when you get back to the hangar. Ethanol is a major problem for stored older cars. It does bad things to tanks, fuel pumps, hoses,etc . As a result, many articles have come out on how to deal with this stuff,including products to help stabilize it before it goes into phase separation. I read an excellent article called "The Ethanol Issue" in my British Motoring magazine. At the end of the article it said to check out the Moss tech video on Dealing With Ethanol atmossmotors.com. I was not able to locate the video on the web site but did find an excellent article there about ethanol under "products."It pretty well summarizes the effects of ethanol, fuel life prior to phase seperation,and of course their recommended products to combat it. Well worth reading. I, like Lowell, have my doubts about this "snake oil" but am willing to try it. Rotax does recommend a stabilizer in the fuel (at least the school did) I have some different products that claim to help keep the water/alcohol in solution and will probably run an unscientific test on them to see if in fact the stuff works. I did that with POR 15 paint vs Eastwood rust block,Ospho,etc in the past. The bottom line for me is that I really don't want to drain the fuel out of my tanks after I fly it. This is a major pain in the b--tt! I will of course, if I have too. [/quote] The build manual actually calls for almost exactly that- drilling 1/8" drain holes in the bottom surface of the flaperons right at the trailing edge, one for each "bay" that has a hinge/attachment, but not for every bay. Then again this might not have been in all versions of the build manual, or maybe your original builder didn't do it, or maybe the holes are specified as optional? "Cut the notch (in the trailing edge) for the cap strip 1/8" wider on the outboard side of each rib to provide a drain opening for the area behind the lip". This lip mentioned is on the bottom of the trailing edge and points up. After covering and painting you burn a 1/8" hole in the fabric there with a needle nose soldering iron. If your trailing edges have this done you should be able to feel the notch under the fabric at the forward edge of the wing trailing edge on the outboard edge of each rib. If the notch is not there the trailing edge "Lip" mentioned above will catch water draining back. In this case I would burn a drain hole right in front of the trailing edge and drill a hole in the trailing edge right behind that one to drain any water caught behind that "Lip". I have just imported this aircraft from CA to BC Canada ( I live about 250miles straight north of you).I hope to get it ready for Canadian certification in the spring. I think I was thinking of the drain holes in the wing fabric. So the manual must not think that's there's an appreciable amount of moisture collecting inside the individual bays of the flaperon. Or they have a channel that would allow for the flow of moisture between the bays/cavities. The transducer has failed again and it is less than 2 months old and less than 8 hrs ! My first one lasted almost a year. This unit is coming out of my panel and a plug installed in its place until I find something nice to put in that hole. I removed the transducer to see what the problem was. The impeller is stuck and I could not get it to move with compressed air or Kroil. I had thought seriously of the the method of getting my prior transducer to turn (a 5 LB sledge hammer) ...." I made a mental note that I guess I won't be using one of those Northstar units but now I think you're on to something. It can't be so bad that it has 100% failure rate. It must be failing due to some configuration or usage problem. Hopefully Dick will do a little more experimenting before pronouncing the product dead and useless. -- Paul A.
