I need some opinions from the List. I run a Rotax 912s in a model 7 and it
has developed a noise in the radio every time I transmit. It would best be
described as a crackling popping noise in the headset. It is connected some
way with the engine sense it varies with the RPM of the engine and quits
altogether when I shut the engine down. I was up flying the other day and
after I landed I called the FBO and asked for a radio check and he said I
was a little static'y but I was readable. Could I have a bad spark plug or
plug wire? The engine seems to be running fine. Do I have a bad ground some
where...opinions?

Subject: | 582 QUESTION AND STATIC PORT LOCATION |
I purchased, Aug '09, a 1994 Kitfox IV, which came with a new 582 grey
head. The engine has never been started and appears today as it would
have come from the factory in 1994. The question is do I run it as is
or tear it down for inspection? The exterior and what I can see of the
interior, intake and exhaust ports, appear clean and free of rust. The
entire kit was stored indoors, but not necessarily in a controlled
temperature environment. Also I plan to install the static ports just
forward of the horizontal stabilizer on both sides of the fuselage.
Does anyone have the exact location measurements for this location?
Appreciate any guidance from the group.

I would say have the engine torn down and inspected. Might be just fine in
side=2C but no way to know for sure without haveing a looksee. New seals
installed then also. Rotax recomends that seals be replaced every 5 years.

Possible bad ground in the antenna system... but I doubt it because you
would have very poor transmit strength and you didn't mention that.
You can look for a bad ground on the shield that covers the mag P-Leads.
That certainly would cause your problem... That shield should be well
grounded at the base of the engine.
Finally look for a resistor plug that may have the resistor shorted. Or a
plug cap that has arced inside. (It will be loose)

Subject: | 582 QUESTION AND STATIC PORT LOCATION |
That's one approach,-no doubt the sanest. I had the same-circumstances
when I purchased-my unfinished Model 2. The 582 gray head was delivered i
n the early 90's and never run. I did the break-in protocol in 2005 with no
problems. Perhaps foolishly, I then flew it despite it's age without incid
ent.- I did have to have the C-Box rebuilt at about 20 hours, however, wh
en began to slip and over-rev the engine during a run-up. There should be a
service bulletin about that on the Rotax site that you should check out if
you have that gearbox. The engine-now has-150+ hours-and I've gained
confidence in it. It will go in for teardown and inspection soon, however.
