I have a gascolator and a Rotax fuel filter just before the pump and haven't had a problem. What was clogging the filter? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Time: 09:35:10 AM PST US From: Jim_and_Lucy Chuk Subject: RE: Kitfox-List: Re: Fuel Pump IV-1200 w/ 582 On the subject of fuel filters=2C after haveing to make an off field landin g in my Avid when a filter plugged up on me=2C (no damage except almost to my shorts LOL) I added a second filter in parallel to the other one. I hav e a fuel shut off valve that stops the flow through the second filter. I u se both filters for take off and climb=2C then close the second filter off. I don't have a fuel flow gauge=2C but if the engine ever starts to miss =2C the first thing I will do is open the valve for the second fuel filter. Almost all the flow goes through the first filter=2C so the back up filte r should be clear. I am using the red hard setting 3M pipe sealant. I also have some black non hardening 3M. But, it is messy as hell to use. My 1st experience with it wasn't successful. I had it all over everything but the threads and it didn't seal. In addition my post script has been Mod 3 582 Rebuild. Exciting as Hell to see a 2 1/2 year total rebuild project rise from the ashes and take flight, even if someone else is doing the flying. It's nice to be able to change the signature isn't it? I use Permatex sealer thta comes in a tube....it's a lot stiffer than the brush-on stuff, and I'm pretty sure the container says "non- hardening". Best I've found after lots of trials is 2-part polysulfide sealant: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/ps890.php Guy Buchanan San Diego, CA K-IV 1200 / 582-C / Warp / 400 hrs. and counting ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 11:33:56 AM PST US From: Jim_and_Lucy Chuk Subject: RE: Kitfox-List: Re: Fuel Pump IV-1200 w/ 582 Hi Mark=2C yes I have a gascolator of sorts. The Avids have a small maybe 1 1/2 quart tank behind the seat that the wing tanks gravity feed into. I t acts as a gascolator as the fuel line going out is about 3" up from the b ottom and there is a drain on the bottom of the tank that sticks out the bo ttom of the plane to get water and junk out of the tank that settles to the bottom. I had bought this Avid after it had sat for about 7 or 8 years an d was worried about junk in the tanks. I cleaned them out as good as I cou ld=2C and then had filters between the wing tanks and the header tank. It doesn't take much to plug a filter in a gravity feed system. I got about 1 5 hrs out of it before I had the unplanned landing. It's been about 3 year s ago=2C but I think I did change out the filters once before the plugging happened. After that=2C I mentioned it on the Avid list=2C and was told by the factory that there should never be filters before the header tank. I' ve since gone about 250 hrs with the plane without that problem. I was sti ll worried about junk in the tanks=2C and that is why I came up with the se cond backup filter. Never had to use it=2C but it's there if I need to. T ake care=2C Jim Chuk Avids.
