Larry,
Nice looking muffler system. Did you allow for expansion differences
between the engine and the muffler? I had a similar system (NSI) on my
Kitfox and it developed cracks at the pipe/muffler joint. I ended up
putting a slip joint right at the muffler and no problems after that. It is
a much quieter system with the muffler.

I don't know if these will come through, but I told you I would try to let
you know about the results of my muffler for the Kitfox 4-1200 EA-81.
I had 2 straight stacks on it for 550 hrs. It was awful after the 1st 2 hrs.

I didn't know much about mufflers ,but with a lot of help from the group
and particularily from Al Wick,I have an exhaust system that seems to work
very well. If you check Al's posts and ideas you will find info for a system
that works better than advertized. I made my first flight with it today. I
flew over a friends house. He said a little later a C-172 flew over much
higher and my plane was much quieter. My wife and I have never been able to
converse in the Fox,but today I talked with her on a cell phone from the
air. The difference is spectacular. The only change I made from Al's plans
was to make it 10" long instead of 6". This was only because I had the
material and the space. Tomorrow we fly to Breakfast about 20 mi away. We
will get Mary's input. Larry Huntley,Dundee,NY

Hi Mike,
The muffler and the pipes are separate pieces. I bolt on one side,
slip on the muffler, slip on the other pipe and bolt it up. There are
holes drilled through the stacks and muffler and pins in the clamps
that live in those hole. It is like the system on a Piper.
I was familiar with the NSI problem. My stepson used one and had the
same problems. Larry

Subject: | Flap rivets folllowup. |
A few weeks back I asked about using an470 instead of the flush rivets.
I have finished with all this and wanted to follow up. On the flap I am
re-using the original glue had failed, been repaired and failed again
(not by me I have no info on why this happened) and on the new rivet
there were a few places where the glue had failed, likely due to
handling over the years.
I riveted the new flap at 4" pitch with AN470D rivets and can report
that it looks fine, so if the dimpling was to help the looks then I
guess it's a personal issue as it looks quite fine to me without it. My
personal standards of appearance may be quite low though as on the
exiting flap that had originally been riveted with AN426 type rivets I
elected to add a rivet between the exiting ones and I used the AN470
rivets for that job also. So I have one flush and one dimpled rivet
alternating down the flap. To, no difference. I can see a line of shop
heads on the bottom at 4" pitch and a line of factory heads on the top
at 8" pitch.
The flap is much more rigid with the new rivet pattern and I expect good
service life. I would heartily endorse adding 1/2 an ounce to your
aircraft and using 4" pitch on the flaps as my personal feeling is that
the original glue bond is not all that strong. Others have fared quite
well with the 8" pitch I am sure.

Deke,
This is what it looks like before you install it;
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/hydroformslipjoinst.php
I ordered the SPG-4 gearbox and have the engine off ready to install new
pulleys on the other end of the engine. I had to use a different location
for my ignition pickups.
