Subject: | Michigan Kitfox'ers at Dawn Patrol, Memorial Day Services |
Myself, Marco, and one other (the owner never showed up at his plane
while I was there) Kitfox flew into Y91...Home Acres, yesterday for a
Dawn Patrol breakfast.
Today, I took part in a Memorial Day fly-over at three small towns
near here. There was a Stearman bi-plane, a C-172, a C-150, a MD-5
Maule, an Ercoupe and my Kitfox. We flew over the Brooklyn, MI
parade, the Cement City parade, and the gathering at the Napoleon
Cemetery. We had tried to coordinate the three flights to avoid
having to land each time, but that wasn't meant to be. So we made
three individual flights, landing and "de-briefing" after the down-
and-back passes at each site. While waiting for the last fly-over
which was to be at Napoleon, a storm was coming our way and we were
hoping to get the alert phone call before it hit...we did, and off we
went....this one would have to be a one-pass deal, and it's a good
thing, 'cause we were getting tossed about a good bit by the winds,
and maybe a bit of propwash turbulence to boot. We made the pass,
broke off toward our respective hangars...the other 5 going back to
3NP, and I made a kind of "missing man" peel-up" and went the other
way home. I was getting some strong winds rockin' me around, but got
it in over the trees and safely home....piece of cake. : ) Five
minutes later, the rain hit.
Now that I think about it, maybe Marco DIDN'T fly in yesterday....I
never saw him actually run the engine. I DID, however, see him run
when I started my engine....maybe it was the straight-pipes barkin',
or maybe the rumor that Jabiru engines throw out a lot of parts when
they run.....hmmmmmm.....: )

I have purchased my insurance for the 2 years that I have owned my Kitfox IV Speedster
through the EAA program which uses Falcon Ins as the broker and the actual
insuring company has been Global. I have a little over 700 total hrs, 100
tailwheel of which about 70 is in the Kitfox. I just rec'd my renewal and the
premium has increased to $995 and this is for liability and not in motion only
coverage. This is about what I paid the first year, but last year it was about
$100 or so lower and was hoping it would decrease again this year instead of
increasing. Quotes on full coverage the previous years were about $500 more
and I haven't asked this year. I realize that the cost of the premium is affected
by a lot of factors such as where the plane is located/hangar'd, age of pilot
(I'm 58), pilot rating (I'm still a private pilot with current medical), and
previous ins claims (I did have a C172 destroyed inside a hangar during a storm).
Previous to owning the Kitfox I could get full coverage on a C172 valued
at $35k for less than $800/yr and I insured a Cherokee 140 in 2007 ($30k) for
less than $600/yr., so I have been disapointed at the cost of insuring the Kitfox.
I would appreciate knowing if what I'm presently paying is consistent with
what others are paying and if anyone else has a better deal ??? Thanks, Paul
Perry

After troubleshooting fuel leaking out of one of my Bing carbs while the engine
was not running, I figured out that the source was the primer line. My assumption
was that years and ethanol combined to erode the innards of my primer and
I perused Aircraft Spruce for another. I saw a plunger type, just like the one
I had, and a bulb type. If you do a search on Aircraft Spruce for "fuel primer"
you will see my choices. I chose the bulb type because it was lighter. Anybody
who flies a model 2 would understand that. It came quickly and I installed
it, only to find that I still had the leak. So now I must ask what is going
on? Why does a new primer allow fuel to flow when not pumped? Is there something
about the plunger type that makes it required for my bing carbs? If I remove
the primer entirely, how do I deal with the leftover holes in my carbs?

Jeff,
Stay away form those bulb type primers- trouble lurking.
Call Rotax 866-418-4164 and get a new one. about 20$ .
They can leak after a while yes--- I turn off my fuel shut off when not flying.
Make sure you are plumbed after the shot off for your primer.
I had a old Kitfox 2 here that flew in -- I did a service - Get this --
the fuel line that went from gascolator to impulse fuel pump had cracks in it ........
i touched it and it squirted out --- SCARY !! and it was that Black
automotive fuel line............. i replaced them all with blue urethane fuel
line and safety wire.

I have been insured with Avemco for over 10 years.
I have over 17,00 hrs with over 8000 taildragger and 900 hrs in a Kitfox,
and I have never had a claim.
My rates went up the last two years so I called and asked why. They told me
that it was because of my age. When you reach a certain age they automatily
raise the rates.

Subject: | Re: Flaperon tube looseness? |
Thanks guys.
Lowell, I think you're right on. I'm going to drill the rivets out and pop in
some larger ones. I'll tell you how this happened (I think) .. I had the plane
parked facing away from the wind on a really gusty day with the control column
locked. I think the buffeting loosened up the flaperon rivets, unfortunately.
Hard lesson. Will replacing the rivets require any disassembly?

We're about ready to install the GSC 3-bladed prop on our 912 on a KFIV. Is the
aluminum backing plate (in the center of the attached photo) used in this installation?
thanks
