By the way, did you buy your kit from Jimmy in Texas? I think you did and if so an extra rudder gap foam from my kit is on yours. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=304014#304014 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:23:59 AM PST US From: Lynn Matteson Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Re: Another Kitfox hits 1000 hours Hi Tom- Yes I did buy the unfinished kit from Jimmy, but I didn't use the rudder gap foam....I made up my own rudder gap fairing, after making airfoils for the vertical. I had some prints that Jimmy gave me for the shape of the vertical airfoils, but they seemed quite fat, so I scaled them down a bit. I used a "W" (cross section)-shaped aluminum "socket" for the vertical, then rounded the leading edge of the rudder to fit inside the "W", creating a pretty decent fairing, similar to the fiberglas item available from Kitfox. I haven't heard from Jimmy, and I know he follows the Jabiru Yahoo group, where I also announced this accomplishment...guess I'd better call and see how he is. This foam...was it the hard yellow foam, or the pretty soft white vinyl-covered foam? I used some of the hard foam to do some forming somewhere, but I can't figure out for the life of me what that vinyl stuff is used for....after 1000 hours, I guess I don't need to know what it should have been used for. : ) Lynn Matteson Kitfox IV Speedster, taildragger Jabiru 2200, #2062, 1000.2 hrs (since 3-27-2006) Sensenich 62"x46" Wood (summer) Electroair direct-fire ignition system Rotec TBI-40 injection Status: flying...1000 hrs. plus... My Classic 4 kit came with one for a model 4 and one for a Serries 5 kitfox. jimmy was going to modify it to use on his/your 4. I don't know what the white foam is. I don't think my kit had any of that in it. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=304062#304062 ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 12:07:06 PM PST US From: "floran higgins" Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Re: Another Kitfox hits 1000 hours Congratulations Lynn, for reaching 1000 hrs. I did call him today and mentioned it, and he didn't recall it. I recall using some of the hard yellow foam for building up the top of my rudder and the vertical stab, so they'd better match the slightly fatter area where the trailing edge of the vert. and the leading edge of the rudder came together. I take out the sensor and use a pot of boiling water to check it. Adding different concentrations of antifreeze can raise the boiling point to get more calibration points. My coolant temps (532) vary with air temp quite a bit. If it's 40 OAT, then I can't get the coolant above 140 until after take-off. At 90 OAT, I'll see 200, and I've seen 220 sometimes. I had the first thermostat come apart inside the engine. The temp seemed to be higher than usual. The u-shaped frame had separated from the metal ring where it's spotwelded or crimped and the valve gate was jammed partway closed because it had gotten sideways. Fortunately all the little parts were still intact and I didn't have to go fishing.
