I put two LED lights in the dash. The anodes goes to a 12 V source. The Cathods to the bolt that holds the main gear stop on the top of the wheel well for the aerocet float. Just lift the big panel on the float and you will see two bolts at the front of the wheel well on the top. When the gear comes up..and hits the stop...it grounds out and the light goes green. In fact, my left gear was not quite hitting the stop when there was no weight on it. Looks like it was against the stop to me...but guess not quite. Not sure how far off the over center it was but I adjusted it till I got the light with gear down in the air just to be sure. So if something goes off with the cables after a hard landing on wheels...you will see it immediately. Costs about $ 10. Good piece of mind. I originally had the two leaf. It did not break..but several others reported theirs had broke so I changed it. On thing I noticed is that it does not bend as much, so the wheel does not caster as easily. You have to get some speed up to get going the right way. Going to have a spring shop rebend mine. I recantly broke the tailwheel "leaf spring" on me Kitfox II(#220). It was the original one, a single blade (1,25"wide)and the wheel is an original solid Maule rubber wheel. I borrowed a spring from a KF III that is curently beeing rebuilt. It is a two blade spring but to put it on my KF II I need to modify the fastening system for the spring. I have contacted Skystar and they say that both these spring types are obsolete and they have designed a new three pice spring, costs 125 usd. I am now waiting for them to send me a picture of this new spring. What is your experience, wich kind of tailwheel spring is best for the KF II ? ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 04:14:17 AM PST US From: kitfoxjunky@decisionlabs.com Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Kitfox 4 engine upgrade 912 or 912S In a KF IV it is an awesome combination. He too wanted to go to floats, although just straight (non-amphib) type. He liked the Jabiru for it's fuel economy, smoothness, and reliability. The first year he operated on wheels. But the second year when he put it on floats he was disappointed with the performance. Even solo in that light Avid airframe (530 lbs on wheels if I remember correctly) it was underpowered. He crashed the airplane shortly after it was put on floats in an accident that happened from hitting large waves after not being able to lift off in a reasonable distance. It was his opinion that the engine just doesn't develop enough thrust for what a seaplane needs (a seaplane needs all the thrust as you can get). Consequently large diameter props are typically required. The Jab spins too many rpm's to turn a long propellor efficiently. Possibly the larger Jabiru might work better, but I believe it also runs higher rpms without aid of a gearbox (??). So that one I'm not sure about. But if it were me I'd go with the sure thing for a Model IV amphib, the 100 hp 912 Rotax. And if your floats and airframe are light, even that 582 will work ok. I've flown lots of Avids and Kitfoxes on straight floats with 532-582 engines. They are great performers off the water with that engine, so they will still be ok as an amphib I'm sure. But that 912s will put you in the Supercub class. But....this is just my opinion after flying Avids and Kitfoxes for 1200+ hours, mostly on floats... Some time ago I started applying a plug on the fuel cap vents to prevent clogging by bugs. Unfortunately, the plug was air tight. I recently performed a condition inspection. Part of the process, as you know is to inspect the wing fuel strainers. So, I drained the fuel--leaving the tank full of air that could expand with temperature. Apparently the temperature reached the point of creating significant pressure in the rear fuel tank. When I re-fueled after the condition inspection I noted a leak from the wing. I found a delamination of the upper trailing edge joint of my fiberglass fuel tank. You weren't around. The woman at the desk was talking to someone about the race results. She said, "The one I like is the Kitfox". Congradulations how about a short synopisis of your race. Red Hamilton won his class with the tube and fabric Tailwind with an average speed of 223 mph. We do have plenty corn here in central WA though. The Timothy hay growers plow up their hay fields and plant Corn about every six years as a crop rotation. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=306615#306615 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message kitfox-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Kitfox-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/kitfox-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/kitfox-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
