Subject: | Re: Lynn's engine |
Hi Mike-
Those are the coils for the Electroair direct-fire ignition system.
Actually, the coils are black, but there is a yellow electrical
insulator on each one. Electroair had a display booth in Hangar C, I
think, and they had their "Electroair Test Plane" located near the
Homebuilt Hangar. They are currently close to having their STC(?)
granted for their unit for either Lycoming or Continental... or both,
I don't know how all that works. They told me they had just sold a
dual-mag unit to a Jabiru 3300 owner from Australia of all places.
This week I'm going to contact them regarding getting my MAP system
for my engine.....this will allow for ignition advance at high
altitudes, or for low manifold pressure situations, something I
haven't had up to now. When I bought my unit from them, they did not
have an engine to test on (I was the guinea pig for the Jabiru
engine), so they would not include the MAP sensor in my package. When
I get some testing done with the MAP included in my ignition system,
they can interpolate my information and start to sell the MAP's along
with the units they sell. That will make for a complete ignition
system which they haven't been able to supply so far for the Jabiru.
The advance curve that they will build into my unit will be set up to
be on the cautious side....one and a half degrees of advance per inch
of drop in manifold pressure, versus 2 degrees per inch drop on
"regular" engines. At Oshkosh, they had a display that allowed you to
see the manifold pressure drop, and the number of degrees of advance
go up....to a maximum of 40 degrees. Now I need to get one of those
advance readouts for my plane.....more lost panel space, but cool-
looking as all hell!
I think what happened in the race was that any would-be competitor
heard about the "high voltage" and was scared off from entering in my
class. : )

Subject: | AV8r3400 & Oshkosh Ultralite Field |
AV8r3400,
I share your thoughts about the UL Field, when I had my 4 we would always
come into Oshkosh via the UL field, great bunch of people down at the barn,
donuts and coffee every morning for $1.50. I stopped in there on Friday and
to my surprise, donuts and coffee was still $1.50 and bottled water for $1.
It has been over 4 years now since flying in there but at that time it was a
blast, no tower, no radio chat, just call in ahead of time to make sure the
field was open and follow the NOTAM path staying below 300 agl, look for the
traffic pattern and fall into line to land. Very fun flying. At that time we
were able to camp under the wing and there was no camping fee, just pay to
get into AirVenture every morning, not sure how it is now. Met allot of
wonderful people at the UL field, sorry I missed you, maybe next year. Where
are you out of?

Sorry I missed you Lloyd. Mine was the yellow IV (with peeling flapperons)
at the UL field. I was thinking of putting my cell # on the prop tag, I
probably should have...
Though it can be a challenge to land on, I would encourage more of our
fraternity to fly in to the UL field. There is lots of fun to be had down
there and easy access. Plus you can go flying during the week...

Subject: | Air speed indicator stuck |
Yesterday I entered the pattern to land behind a student in a retractable doing
stop and gos. They usually sit on the runway a while, and talk about it I guess.
Anyhow, I figured no big deal I'll just pull the speed back to about 40 mph and
hang on down wind while they decide to take off. I glanced at the ASI when the
kitfox started to feel like about 45 mph but it said 73. It didn't sink in
to me that the ASI needle was stuck so I kept slowing down until I felt the stall
buffet.
This time I was glad those guys were in front of me. I had time to sort out the
stuck ASI. I don't pay much attention to it until I turn final then slow to
50 mph. I might have tried to slow it down more and cause a stall on final.
Here's a picture. It took me a while to see the problem. How long do you have
to stare at it to see it?

Had this happen once when some moisture mixed with dirt/dust caused a bubble in
the pitot line. I fixed by detaching the line at the ASI and blowing compressed
air back through the pitot tube. Got the water and dirt to come out.

Bingo! Took me a few seconds to see it...guess that's why you
sometimes see a little bit of shiny stuff running across those
screws, as in a clear sealer or CA glue to prevent back-out.

My first thought was a bug in the pitot. I had tapped the gage with no movement
at all on the needle, not even a slight jiggle, so after I landed I asked a
couple guys...one an A&P...what it might be and they both said "Bug in the pitot".

I've had two instances of a stuck ASI just this summer...but stuck in
the slow position. Both times required a back-blast of air from the
ASI end of the pitot tube to clear out the effects of a a mud dauber
setting up housekeeping. I gotta keep reminding myself to put the
"Remove before Flight" booties on the pitot and the fuel vents after
a flight.

I fly out of Merrill Wisconsin (KRRL).
Yes, you can still camp under the wing of your plane down there. Many people were
doing this. We (my EAA Chapter, UL75) camp at the private campground across
the street from the UL Red Barn.
Doughnuts are $1 and coffee is $.50 every morning. Flight briefings are 6.30 am
and 5.30 pm in order to fly for that day. I usually got up for the 6.30 briefing,
had my cuppa joe and a fat-boy pill, listened to the talk and got my wristband
to be "legal" to fly all that day when the field is open fixed wing ops.
The pattern is tight and the field short, but our planes are capable of doing it.

The approach can be tricky, especially coming in from the north (Runway 15). You
are making a right hand pattern and you have about a 200 yard final. In my
plane with the round cowling and high panel it is virtually a blind turn, through
a hole in the trees... Caused me to execute several go-rounds over the week.
Watch the videos here of how the pattern looks:

This video is a little old and the trees have gotten bigger...

I have a Kitfox 1 and recently ground looped into a tree. The right
wing was badly damaged and will need replacing along with the flaperone
hinges and propeller damaged. the fusalage and left wing are good. I
want to know if anyone would have a ballpark guess of how much this
would cost to repair providing I do the wing fabric myself and purchase
the wing and have someone tare the engine apart. If this is too
costly, How much could I get if I sold it as is? (ballpark)
