    Subject: Leo Rice
I met and visited with Leo one year at a Kitfox factory fly in. I noted he was a senior pilot (Air Force) and during our brief visit found out he had flown WC 130s during part of his career chasing both hurricanes (Atlantic) and typhoons (South Pacific). I had served with the 54th Wea Recon Sqdn way back when on Guam. We flew WB 29s then converted to WB 50s in those days. I was just a radio operator but I was needed. All our communications was morse code once we were out of VHF range. As I was building a S/5 myself I corresponded with him some for advice. He built a great looking S/5. He was a great guy. I still have some of the information saved that he sent me. Norm On 8/5/2010 5:27 PM, Lowell Fitt wrote: > Dick, > Did you do any hurricane chasing in the orion. Malcolm, Is it the flaperon skin ou are asking about. If so, yes it can be rolled. I bought the leading edge aluminum for my project in a roll. It was from Aircraft Spruce. I don't recall the thickness as I am out of town as I write this, but it should be in their online catalogue. If you have to buy all new parts to build a new wing I would make an educated guess of $3500. if you can find a used wing and/or salvage parts from your damaged wing it could be considerably less. > > Having the engine torn down and inspected would't be too much if their is no damage. Lowell, I didn't know Leo. My primary mission in the P-3 Orion was ASW (anti sub) not hurricane hunting. The only time I flew into rain storms purposely was to wash the salt off the aircraft as flying at 300 ft (or below) over the ocean makes for a gruby, salty airplane. We flew @ 100 ft when we were "rigging" ships. I never liked that. One distraction (such as Russian gun turrents tracking you) and SPLAT ! Dick Maddux Fox 4 Milton,Fl

Hi Dick, Sending these instruments into the Mfg at times is fairly cheap to get them fixed or re-calibrated. I send in UMA gauges and they only charge $29 to make them brand new. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az. Thanks Norm. He lived fairly close to me and was a great guy. I will keep your post as a reminder of what he flew. From: "Tom Jones" <nahsikhs@elltel.net>
Thanks Malcolm, After reading your post this AM I went out and hooked everything back up and turned the master switch on for a minute and then off. My multimeter showed 4.3 volts on the Key west out put terminal and the Hobbs continued to run for 60 seconds then stopped. I then checked the out put terminal and it was down to 2.5 volts and dropping. I think I will leave it wired as is. I like the voltage regulator to be off line with the master off. I don't know why, it just seems like a good thing to me. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=307771#307771
