    Subject: Propeller question
All this propeller talk is appropriate timing for me, I have a 68" taper tip warp on a 3:1 C box on my 582. I was amazed at how much pitch I had to put in to keep it from overspeeding. I get what I measure to be 14.5 deg. am I measuring incorrectly or is this about right. Is there a table somewhere of what to expect when you do this? It was amazing to watch the egt's drop as I homed in my target RPM. Now measuring just short of 1000 on a very hot day.

Thank you all for the input on my question about using an aux. fuel pump on my 582. Although some of you are using a 912 engine, the info you related is still interesting and useful. My main reason for using an aux. pump is for cold starting so I am trying to keep it as simple as possible for obvious reasons. Thanks for your input. Glen, I'd be careful using a GSC prop if it is very old. The have an "age date" as well as hours in service limit. I had the following experience a couple years ago on a prop that to this day looks like it was never used. Date 4/5/2008. "Dear friends, Well it turns out I'm lucky to be alive. I was late leaving Buckeye, AZ and flew more that 6 hrs yesterday and had to land in Deming, NM because sun was about to set. This morning while doing a walk around on my Kitfox III ,before the final leg home, I found that the blades were loose (3 blade ground adjustable GSC prop). One blade was so loose I turned it by hand. It had an annual the day I bought by a Phoenix Kitfox guru. I suspect it must have been loose when I left AZ but I never checked as it was not on my checklist. Of course my instructor always had me check the 172's prop when I was getting my bi-annual but I did not think to do that since the motor on the Kitfox had not been run since the annual 4 days earlier. What saved my life, I am sure, is that the prop was overpitched and all I could get was 4200 rpm. The Rotax 912 is supposed to get better than 5500 rpm and has a gear reduction. Because I am such a skilled pilot, (read stupid) I accepted the performance reduction in the interest of getting home. I'm sure that if the prop had turned up to 5500 rpm I would not need an aircraft in order to fly. Well assuming I made it to heaven. Thank the Good Lord for looking after us fools." That's the beauty of ground adjustable. I run about 12 1/2 degrees on a 70" for a similar configuration, but the pitch will vary considerably depending on your weight, drag, density altitude, jetting, disposition, and just about anything else you can think of. That's why you won't find any tables or other "useful" information. Guy Buchanan San Diego, CA K-IV 1200 / 582-C / Warp / 500 hrs. and counting

Guy is absolutely right. Don't ever worry about your actual numbers on pitch angle. Just worry about rpm, temps and performance that you want. Each prop will will be different from different Mfg's. Your plane's flight characteristics from Mfg to Mfg will make it slightly different , too. So set it where your WOT should be, watch your temps because prop pitch will make a difference and the outside make up of your plane will factor into all this as far as proper pitch for the prop. -------- Roger Lee Tucson, Az.
