Not a blanket "C" box ban, however, I have been running the 3:1 gears and ultralight 72" 3 blade for over 100 hrs an have not had any blade movement. While IVO cautions against the use of the 3 blade and 3:1, they tell you to use a small piece of the SS tape and put it across the root opening between the blades. If the tape cracks, you have blade movement and that is bad JUJU. I have not had a single tape crack. I was very anal about checking the bolt Tq for about the first 50 hrs, but after the initial run, and 2 subsequent tightenings, I have never had the blades loosen up on me. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry aka SNAKE Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 (147 hrs and counting on the rebuild) IVO IFA Full Lotus 1450 #1 snake oil salesman since 1-22-2009 I would rather die trying to live, than to live trying not to die.... I was watching mine today from the outside while my son started it. For a couple of seconds after the engine catches and the rpm is climbing to a smooth idle, the blades are whipping all over the place. I'd guess conservatively that the tips oscillate in kind of a 'Dutch roll' motion up to 4 inches in both the longitudinal and axial planes. Yet, after 3 hours with the new prop now and with no loosening of the bolts after torquing them on installation and once again after a ground runup, the above mentioned tapes that act as indicators of inappropriate blade root movement are fine. I'd guess the issue here has more to do with the flexibility of the carbon fiber blades. They're just as 'strong' by whatever definition you'd like to apply as the wooden blades they replaced, but have different dynamic qualities. Did my first short cross country with the new prop today. Smooth as glass and very enjoyable.
