Subject: | Wing Tank Fitting |
Hello Fellow Kitfox Drivers,
I re-sloshed my wing tanks last summer. I had to cut off the old brass elbow
fitting with a dremel tool so I could get the finger strainer out. Now I
have been looking to get the whole assembly back together. I cannot seem to
find a swivel fitting that will allow me to use the original finger strainer
(3/8 NPT). I need a 1/4 NPT male swivel 90 degree low profile. Or some sort
of banjo fitting (already tried the ANDAIR BANJO FITTING FML 1/4"). This is
too long. I only have 1.25" from the wing tank to the inside of the first
rib. What are the rest of you guys using after the tank have been installed?
Thanks,
Kirk

Kirk, my kit came with a straight fitting to attach to the finger strainer. The
manual says to notch the rib to clear the fitting and fuel line. You will probably
have to notch the butt rib also. picture attached.

Kirk,
You can use a street elbow in the finger strainer pointed
whichever way you want then put a straight male fitting in the elbow.
Worked for me. Available at your local hardware store.

Guys,
I am working on installing the cowl baffling in my series 5 Outback with a
912 engine, stock exhaust and stock coolant radiator, (no oil cooler).
Wondering what your experiences have been running the stock baffling as
described in the manual, is it the best way to go? Have people found they
needed more, less, different install techniques, added rubber skirting, etc,
etc.
For those that can post, some pictures of what you have put in your machine
and how it is working for you would be great.
Thanks,

Kirk,
Interesting problem and parallels ours exactly. I am helping a friend
finish a previously started Model V with the center wing tank ports.
The previous builder had done some interesting things, which included an
electric fuel gauge which required, at least in his mind covering most
of the first rib with thin plywood which seriously limits access. He
then mounted a half inch bushing which he glued into the tank, then a
3/8" finger strainer with integral straight hose barb. There was no way
to attach hose to the hose barb and fold the wings, or unfold them, for
that matter.
What came of it is a polycarbonate doubler glued to the bottom fabric in
the area of the outlet, then cutting the fabric and removing the
threaded parts one by one and after some hairy moments finally got the
large bushing out without damaging the tanks. I got the larger finger
strainers and as you find, discovered that there is not the ideal elbow
fitting out there in the real world. I did find a couple of 5/16" hose
low profile elbows, but they were in 1/4" thread size and there was
absolutely no room for another bushing. What I finally did is chuck the
elbow in a lathe and cut off the threads, then chuck a 3/8" bushing in
the lathe and bore a hole to math the thread free elbow and sweat solder
them together. We now have a low profile elbow with threads that match
the finger strainer. Thinking about it, I realize I will have to modify
a wrench if we ever want to remove the hardware to check the finger
strainer. Picture attached.
Let me know if I can help.

Lloyd,
Check your install manual and see if it is for the 912. I don't think I
have ever seen a 912 install with baffling. I am working on a Model IV and
a Series V with 7 firewall forward and no mention of baffling in either
manual.

Very interesting discussion. I have a model 5 Vixen/912UL that I imported last
year. To meet Transport Canada regulations I installed a gascolator on the lowest
point on the firewall ( had to cut a small hole in the lower cowl) and I removed
the inline filter that was installed between the carbs and pump. Actually
my inspector said inline filters (especially ones with paper cartridges) would
not be approved.Apparently if moisture gets into the paper if swells and restricts
the flow. Anyway I have only 80 hours of use (210 TSN) but have yet
to find any debris or water either at the gascolator, header tank or wing tanks
(drains on all). I did not like the filter arrangement after the pump because
of fire hazard should a leak ever occur under pressure. I always use mogas and
strain through a chamois.Have not purchased fuel straight from the hose yet!!
This arrangement seems to work fine so far. Hope it continues.

Hi Vic
Did you get any help on the pressure cap situation. I have the same issue at times.
I also have the old style overflow bottle. Any suggestions??
