Hi Albert, I am in the process of installing a Jabiru 3300 (120 HP) in my Classic IV. I retired my semi-NSI Subaru after too many problems to list. I'm looking forward to 50% more horsepower and over 90 less pounds. Margaret Hastedt College Station TX Classic IV, 3300 -soon! >>> "Albert" <kitfox@ida.net> 3/2/2011 11:34 PM >>> Hello all Here is a question. What is the opinion of a Hirth F30 110 hp. in a model 5TD? I have an NSI 140T with CAP prop. Do not like it. Throw ideas, thoughts or experience to me. No personal exp with Hirth but know of ........... lots of problems... over heating etc . all rumors to be frank. However lots of exp with Jab 3300. Its a Beautiful engine. A jewel to look at, very smooth and powerful. But we have 3 slsa in a training environment that was a nightmare. Maybe as a Hobby aircraft engine it will be fine... The 912S has proven itself to us over and over to be more complex but very very reliable We have flown over 2,500 hours with Jab and 3,000 with 912S Even on a cold day.. less than 45 F the Jab was very difficult to start, the 912S was like a car didn't care.... In spite of its price, the Rotax dominates the market. We now understand why. :-) Its all good enjoy! Dave In a message dated 3/3/2011 8:18:16 A.M. Keep the basic engine, get rid of the dry sump system and gearbox. Put an autoflight or SPG-4 gearbox on it and keep the CAP. Ron at RAM Performance can redo the engine for you and really increase the power and smoothness, he also sells the autoflights on his engine and can put you in touch with the New Zealand factory if you want to buy it outright. When you are finished upgrading, you will have a smooth running engine, lots of power and will have spent a lot less than buying a Rotax or Hirth. The CAP was the only worthwhile thing that Lance had at NSI and I think he actually took the design from a German company. I posted the story as told to me a long time ago by the guy who done it. It takes all kinds to keep the entertainment value up around these parts as bone headed "hunting trip" stories are way to common. Most sound like a red neck fairy tale and start with "this this aint no $#it" or "y'all aint gonna believe this $#it" . A great book filled with one mans hunting stories that is filled with tails of narrow escapes and truly bone headed stuff that should have made ole Bob the recipient of a darwin award is "oh no were gonna die". I know alot of the stories (mainly the true ones) are hard to believe but you know, they are just so ridiculous that you just cant get stoned enough to make them up! -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry aka SNAKE Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 (147 hrs and counting on the rebuild) IVO IFA Full Lotus 1450 #1 snake oil salesman since 1-22-2009 I would rather die trying to live, than to live trying not to die.... Subject: Re: Bungee tube failure
From: "akflyer" <akflyer_2000@yahoo.com>
I posted on this same issue a couple years ago. When I bought my Avid it was because it had been on its back TWICE due to the exact same failure. I was in the process of rebuilding mine when I was out flying with my brother in his Mod II KF and we ended up looking at dirt through the windshield due to the left gear leg folding up. Hmm, that was kind of another one of my funny stories. My brother shows up from OK after being gone from alaska for 10 or 12 yrs. A few days after he shows up he got arrested on an outstanding traffic warrant from years ago haha.. he spends 6 days in jail and I go pick him up from the jail house and we head straight to the airport cause he needs to fly to clear his head of all his bad luck. His first off airport landing at a buddies dirt strip results in us hanging in our seat belts kinda laughing (when the gear folded). Welcome home bro!! OK so at any rate, I learned a few valuable things about the gear leg design. There have been lots of failures of this nature and all start at the toe of the weld with the crack propagating around the tube. When you have your safety cable wrapped around that part of the tube it does absolutely ZILCH for you when the tube breaks. I made my cables just a tad longer and I run it inside the triangle where the angled down tube comes in so you still have the safety cable in place when the tube breaks. I went with the Avid wide / heavy gear (we used this gear on a couple of local kit foxes including my brothers). I chose to cut the tab off the end of mine and slid a tube INSIDE the gear leg so I had a good tube without any welds to start the fracture on. Welded the tab that holds the bungees from slipping off back on and now have a double tough tube for the bungee to wrap around.
