Mike you are right -- I would say that the improper securing of aircraft certainly
contributed to some of the damages.
Dog -screw in are junk - I banned from my strip as well as those idiotic 1" wide
straps or ropes with a tensile of less that 1000 lbs each.
I have others that tie down here have planes break free-- luckily no damage to
other aircraft just their own.
I agree that I saw alot of tiedowns still attached to the aircraft at Sun N Fun.........
The Claw in my opinion would have helped some of them.
The KF 3 is pretty well destroyed-- it was ties to a casting that likely weighed
less than 100 lbs........ each. A Kitfox 3 will lift 1050 legally and likely
2000 lbs before starting to distort. that would need 600 lbs each to hold it
down. - at least

Subject: | Re: Kitfox-List Digest: 4 Msgs - 04/05/11 |
I was camped in the light plane/ultralight area, fourth space from the flight
line in front of the four porta potties.
The M-Squared ultralight that "flew" over a hundred yards in the storm and took
out that much of the flight line fence,
had the claw tie down anchors, I noticed one of them was missing a leg, it had
broke off.
The porta potties were only about fifty feet in front of my tent and I was directly
down wind and in the path of the blue
stuff, tent flattened and canopy frame twisted like a pretzel, some damage to my
van but have no complaints, many lost
aircraft and it's my understanding that many were uninsured.
My camp mate who built and flies a Bearhawk, had his airplane moved into a hangar
just minutes before the storm hit,
the next day, one of the air ops volunteers marshalled him right into another running
aircraft that chewed up the outer
rib bay of his wing!#@$#%!
