No doubt about it, it's a beautiful installation and airplane. I hope they make a profit. -- Paul A. Franz, P.E. PAF Consulting Engineers Office 425.440.9505 Cell 425.241.1618

You are correct about the Lycoming... but your unconfirmed reports are false. We worked a deal out with Rotec Radial to install the R2800.. Let's face it, the radial is a great look on the Kitfox ! So we developed a complete S7SS firewall forward for the R2800 and it is available and several have been sold. We never did get a chance to test different props and the Sensenich prop we had was not the perfect fit but Sensenich now has a prop they claim to be the correct one. We flew it to and from Oshkosh last year and I'm certain that with the correct prop we could get over 1000 fpm climbs and cruise speeds of 115-120 TAS. We did have some issues early on with the throttle body and we changed to the Bing. I believe Rotec has resolved the issue but we never re-installed the throttle body. Fuel burn increased some... approximately 6.5 - 7GPH. As many know we are an OEM for Rotax, Lycoming, and Continental. We have been working with Lycoming since 2008 when they introduced the 233 to possibly install it as an option on the Kitfox S-LSA aircraft. As we all know the 233 lagged. This summer Lycoming said we would have the first of "X" engines off the production line for testing and we committed to trying to get it to Oshkosh on a FLYING aircraft. We are the first flying the new engine complete as delivered from Lycoming with their new electronic ignition. We are extremely busy with kit orders and S-LSA orders and simply did not have enough time or free resources to build a new aircraft. Not wanting to miss the opportunity we decided to pull the Radial and install the Lycoming. The Lycoming powered Kitfox was front row center stage in front of the Lycoming booth at Oshkosh. I had a severe sticky intake valve problem with my 912. It was from using " no ethonal auto fuel". I found out that even no ethonal auto fuel can have other additives that can attack fiberglass tanks. I got the sticky valves freed up by removing the valve covers and intake manifolds and soaking the guides and vlves with Aerokroil. It took several aplications but I have not had any further problems. I only use avgas now! I had this problem on my KF IV Speedster 912ul a couple of years ago after I had started using gas containing ethanol. I am not the builder of my plane, but it was finished in 2001 and I think was a late 90's kit from SKy Star. They coated the fiberglass fuel tanks with a product called "kreem". There have been several reported instances where it seems this was not applied correctly by the factory and after a few years started "peeling off " as I discovered was happening to mine. This exposed the bare fiberglass which was not the type that is ethanol resistant. My sticking valve problem started gradually with cyl 1 or 2, but got so bad before I figured out what was going on, that after shutting down, I would have no compression on any cylinder at all...I could spin the prop by hand the same as if I had a spark plug removed from each cylinder. Anyway, I confirmed where the problem was coming from first by visually inspecting the inside of the tanks with a small video camera hooked up to a laptop where I could see all the bare fiberglass. I then hooked up an external tank I converted from an out board motor and ran some clean fuel with some type of fuel system cleaner (don't remember what brand), for about an hour and bam...no more sticking valves. I realize there a many possible causes of sticking valves, and this may not apply to your situation, but I thought it worth mentioning...I struggled with the problem for a long time, before someone pointed me in the right direction. If this ends up being your problem as well, you can search for keywords like "kreem" and fuel tank problems as there are many posts about the problem and solutions people have used... Good luck, Paul Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=348702#348702

Hello fox flyers who are flying behind a 912. In your opinions how does your ship perform with the current prop. We have the IV/1200 and a GSC 68" prop it is very time consuming to adjust. Does anybody have any opinions on their particular prop. Thanks for the input. Bob & Toodie

You should find that even 10% ethanol gasoline produces less fouling and deposits than leaded gasoline. You do have to have fuel lines, tank coatings and other components that are designed and tested for use with ethanol. -- Paul A. Franz, P.E. I flew the GSC for about a year, but finally got scared off by the 5 yr/500hr life limit by the manufacturer as mine had been installed about 10yrs even though it had less the 200 hrs. For the money I think the IVO prop is hard to beat. My KF IV Speedster is powered by the 912UL so I was able to go with the 68" ultralight version for about $600. Very easy to adjust the pitch to whatever performance you are looking for and I was able to get both a better climb and cruise than the GSC. I liked the looks of the GSC better and performance was ok, but saw too many posts of blades coming apart, so mine is now mounted on my ceiling. Good luck, Paul P. Bob/Toodie, I have a 3 bladed, ground adjustable, Warp Drive prop and it flies great. No problem with it whatsoever. I did get the optional nickel leading edge and it seems to be worth the small increase in cost. John McBean has flown my plane and says it's one of the fastest Kitfoxes he has seen. At gross weight, the rate of climb is 1000 fpm - at sea level on a very warm day. But lets face it, it is a Kitfox, and if speed is what you want, an SX-300 would be a better choice:-) The prop and engine are well harmonized and I can't detect any prop vibration. Setting the blade angle was easy with the included protractor/instructions and it didn't take too long. I like the combination, but I've heard there are other good props out there. That's my two cents worth. Rick Weiss N39RW Series V Speedster, 912ULS SkyStar S/N 1 Port Orange, FL On Aug 5, 2011, at 8:38 PM, rtmarshall wrote: > Hello fox flyers who are flying behind a 912. I had the same combination on my Model 5 Vixen. Changed to an IVO IFA 70". Huge difference in performance. I believe you will find more discussion on this subject in former posts.
