| Subject: | A flight to Belgium |

      Hello guys,
Here is a youTube video I made with my iPhone from my trip to Belgium, last week:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcylNG-klDs

Here is something I don't talk much about:
As I flew toward Germany, above the Danish island of Fyn, I was down at 500 ft
AGL and met a barrier of rain. Asking ATC to advice, they told me that the nearby
airport of Odense (the native town of H.C. Christiansen) had still clear weather.
So I flew there, not being prepared for it. Once there, the tower cleared
me for runway 06 with wind 120 at 14 knots. So, I came on final on a slight
side slip to counter the crosswind. I then flare and being very near stall speed,
I realize that this runway is huge! 1,600 meters long and 40 meters wide
and what I saw in the corner of my eyes, was not correct; I was still a few meters
above the ground! Being stressed with the aborted flight plan and the diversion,
I pushed the throttle to avoid stalling that high. In the process, I
forgot about the crosswind and once on the ground, the wind lifted my right wing
and after a second in balance on the left wheel, I slightly touched the ground
with my left drooping winglet. Only a tiny cosmetic damage; a few millimeters
of fiberglass shaved away. It was the first time it happened to me after roughly
500 hours with my Kitfox. The only thing is that the guy in the tower saw
me and made some comments! ... :-)

      Cheers,
      Michel

No worries, mate. Most of us have experienced something similar in our flying
lives, but were lucky enough that nobody was watching.

      Sorry,

      I think Herb's email got hacked. If I were there, I wouldn't have a
clue how to put the pound sign on an email and some of the phrasing
sounds strangely un American English, then again if he is in London,
what good would it do to send the money to Belfast. I did a Google
Earth on both halves of the address and got two separate location - one
strangely In Ireland, the other a non specific location in London. The
zip code is positive for Ireland. Herb, if this is really you, try the
American Embassy. I doubt this has never happened before, and there has
to be procedures in place to handle these things.

      Michel,
Good report. I often see the drooped tips with symmetrical "adjustments"
on the bottom rear edge. That is one of the rarely mentioned benefits of
that tip style and if the fly on the wall could speak, likely planned for
that exact purpose. Odense is an ancestral home, at least for a fourth
part - father's mother. I have a chart of that area, thanks to one of your
      countrymen.

I emailed the factory and confirmed that a nose wheel conversion is
available for my Model IV - 1050. It's pricey enough to discourage me for
just now but I might follow up in a few months. Has anyone actually tried
and flown a Model IV with the tricycle gear? I understand I be giving up
landing on sandbars, farmers fields, and all sorts of out of the way places.
I can live with all that. I would be interested in how the nose wheel
affects flight, eases landings etc. Just for info.

      Dave,

I have flown a Trigear Mod 2 and since then converted it to a taildragger for the
      owner.

Plane handles excellent on the ground but you could go off the runway if you decide
to not steer it. ( lazy feet)

I do not think the owner will change it back and he a low time pilot.

You seem to have some reservation on your Kitfox -- 582 not trusted now taildragger
not right. My current Mod IV I have over 2000 hours on it on 582 alone and
never had a engine failure. Kitfox are a great, fun airplane and they are
      what you make of it.

I have over 200 videos on youtube and the Kitfox is a blast.

I wouldn't say I have reservations as such. My 582 works quite well, but I
have not had enough hours behind it to allow me to completely dismiss all
the horror stories people like to tell. As far as the tricycle gear goes, I
am having a little trouble learning to cope with the tailwheel on landing
and am a little frustrated. The plane flies fine and any landing problem are
with me not the aircraft. OTOH two of the major differences between this and

Dave, the Kitfox is notoriously squirrely on landing. For the most part, I
believe because the bungee gear comes from the factory seriously toed in. I
checked my new to me 1992 gear and it was toed in almost three degrees per
side. This gear had never been on an airplane and was in new out of the box
condition. Toed in is very destabilizing especially on roll out. I might
suggest that you check the wheel alignment and if toed in use the muscle
method to tweak the gear into alignment and see if it helps. It is a much
less expensive and simpler trick than replacing the engine mount and adding
      the nose gear.

      Excuse me for butting in....

I know nothing! (As Shultz used to say) about tail draggers, but I noticed in the
Kitfox catalog they sell some shims to correct that problem. Or at least that's
what it looked like to me.

[quote="dave.go"]I emailed the factory and confirmed that a nose wheel conversion
is available for my Model IV - 1050. It's pricey enough to discourage me for
just now but I might follow up in a few months. Has anyone actually tried and
flown a Model IV with the tricycle gear? I understand I be giving up landing
on sandbars, farmers fields, and all sorts of out of the way places. I can live
with all that. I would be interested in how the nose wheel affects flight,
eases landings etc. Just for info.

      time. : )

By the way the WX shows a 30% chance of t'storms sometime tomorrow
for Gladwin, but this is Michigan, right? What else would we expect?

      Tommy,

You are correct providing the airplane has either the Grove aluminum spring
gear or their new Bush Gear with the bolt on axles. The original factory
gear came with a welded tube that the axle is inserted into and fastened
with a single bolt through the butt end. The only way to correct the
alignment on these gear legs is to secure the airplane solid and muscle them
into alignment with brute force. It can be done. Denney in the old days
wrote an article on it in the Kitrox Times, their quarterly builders
      newsletter.

Guys I'm jealous, I love to see the videos and hear of the events that
everyone is heading to, it keeps me going, have fun and be safe!! I was
hoping to be in the air by mid-summer but it is going to be more like late
fall at the earliest. I look forward to being able to attend some fly-ins
next year. If anyone is interested our EAA Chapter 439 will be having our
Annual "Ford Airport Days" on Sept 17th. Our event theme for this year is
"The Year of the Builder" we will have our event poster on our website soon
at www.eaa439.org would love to see a Kitfox or 2 there.

I'm heading out for SSR/0MI1 about 9 am, Marco. I plan on getting there a
bit before the 11am start, and get outta Dodge about 1pm.
Still want to make the memorial get-together for a fallen aviator
