I'll second the bush gear. After installing the Highwing LLC bush gear on my model
IV it became a much easier taildragger to land.

Thank you for the replies. The plane I am looking it is a Avid Mk IV built just
a few years ago (meticulously by a gentleman who happens to be one of the original
EAA members, and has just recently quit flying).

However, it has the standard gear (not even the wide gear that's an option). The
Grove gear is probably as great as everyone says but how on earth can it be
      north of $2K?

Good news for me is there is a local CFI who can do a tailwheel endors in that
      plane.

The builder did meticulously set the toe-in (to 0) and says it's a piece of cake
to land - of course, he probably has 20K tailwheel landings.

This plane also has the extended wings - that's 35' span! (I can't find any specs
but the owner says it still cruises at 90 mph! That seemed very high to me
with that kind of wing area and a 582 but it does have an in-flight adjustable
      prop which may explain it.)

I remain a bit nervous, esp. because my purpose in buying an airplane is to fly
with my wife & small children, and then give lots of rides to others (extended
family, friends, Young Eagles). How about if I just stay on grass until I'm
a real pro? Can we say no chance of looping then unless I decide to take phone
call on short final?! Heck, we've got to be able to say that. :)

Despite that, I sure have an inkling to try this. One issue with tri-gear planes
(esp. slower ULs like the Challenger) is that there not much - challenge.
I did get bored with that Challenger pretty quickly.

Paul, You can learn to land that airplane. Just keep the instructor till
you feel comfortable. It isn't really hard to land a tailwheel Kitfox or
Avid, especially with that wng. After I rebuilt my Mod 3 Kitfox I had a
20,000 hour pilot that had 1st flighted 10 Kitfoxes as my instructor. I had
a couple of ground loops and we couldn't figure out why. The Maul tailwheel
bushing was worn so bad the tailwheel would kick out at the slightest sign
of side pressure. I replaced the oilite bushing and haven't come close to a
ground loop in 2 years. The main difference in landing the tailwheel is be
lined up travelling straight down the runway and stay with it for awhile
before you answer that cell phone.

Paul, PS I do have Lowell Fitts bush gear and believe it has saved me a few
times. Not so much from ground loops but from damaging the plane after
flaring too high, stalling and droping to the runway. I finally corrected
      that problem....most of the time.

I cannot find a link for the Lowell gear with Google - is there a web site?

(I would like to get the endorsement in the plane as-is, but long-term I will most
likely replace the gear. To me it makes sense to spend a bit of money to
avoid a future ground loop at all costs. I sure can't stay off pavement forever.)

Paul, I believe Lowell's company and site is High Wing Limited. If you
still can't find it, send me another message.

      Paul,
That Kitfox is about as easy as it gets to land a tailwheel airplane. I've
been flying tailwheel airplanes off and on since I first soloed in a J-3 Cub
in 1962, and I presently own a Kitfox IV. The important thing to make sure
that the landing gear is aligned properly, then don't quit flying a
tailwheel aircraft until it is at a dead stop. Keep the stick back on
landing rollout, and at the first indication that the aircraft may want to
take off one way or the other during rollout, KEEP THE STICK BACK and apply
rudder in opposite direction that the airplane is trying to turn. I've been
a flight instructor since 1967 and have never had a mishap from landing,
even with students, in tailwheel aircraft.

Anyone have the KitFox instructions for installing the Cabane style gear on a SS7?
I was hoping to work on it today/tonight but only have the Grove gear instructions....
I think I can piece it all together from the pictures I have, but
      instructions would be nicer....
