I had a personal best today when I flew my Model IV at a groundspeed
of 2.5 statute miles per hour, about 40 mph airspeed, and I held it
steady at 2720 ft. MSL (about 1720' AGL) My previous best was 9 mph,
before I chickened out. It was pretty smooth flying, but when I got
down to 2.5 mph, I started to drop altitude. This was at 10 am, and
the winds were supposed to start getting gusty at 11 am, so I called
it a day and went home. The reported winds aloft at the time was 29
      kt at 3000'.

Not backwards yet (except for the pilot) but getting there. : )

That's so fun. Next time trying doing the old PTS "Circles around a
      point." It's hilarious.

Guy, what is PTS? I've done circles around a point, but the other is

What in the world is a FAA? Is that FAA, FAA away?

I looked and apparently your lot doesn't use a pilot training syllabus.
      Oh well.

I looked again and some of your lot do!. Now since flying around a fixed
point was part of my training, but not part of my test, I am reverting to my
      original answer.

Flying a fixed point was one of the exercises in my pilot training syllabus.

Well, I received my training in 1972 and have trouble remembering what I did
yesterday, so can't say if it was required in the check ride. I do remember
doing it early on, though. The only thing I remember about the check ride
was landing at a former military base to demonstrate cross wind landing.
Consider that the airplane was a Cessna 170-B. Along side the runway was a
wide apron where the military planes were tied down in the day. I think I
finally put it down pretty close to where the second row of airplanes used
to be parked. I was surprised when he signed me off.

I finished the 40 hours on N338S this morning and will hitch a ride in a
friend's Model IV in the morning to pick it up and then it will be a flight
of two home. It will be nice to see it in my hangar again. I will miss the
guys at Lincoln, though, but not the hour long commute. It will have to be
a regular trip to keep up with the guys - too bad there is no food on the
      airport.
