Is anyone else out there in Kitfox Land having trouble with a slow leak of
their King Fox tires?- Both of my tires have shown a slow leak over time
and on investigation, they are both leaking at the small protrusions of rub
ber where I suspect the rubber was injected into the tire mold.- I just c
hecked one yesterday and found one leak on one side of the tire and two lea
ks on the other side.- Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this on
      their tires.=0A-=0AHarold McConnell=0ANE North Dakota=0AKitfox 3=0A582

I had the same thing happen to me Lowell. I had just bought the aircraft
and my first 3 landings were all dead stick as the engine quit cold turkey on
short final. No way you will catch it with the throttle as it stops too
      quickly.
Set your idle at 1800 on the ground and it will give you a few hundred
more rpm on short final. That most likely will solve your problem. I haven't
had mine stop on me since.
During shutdown you can pull the throttle back a little further against
the stop (below 1800) go to one mag, then the other, then off .
In my case I have to go below 1800 on shutdown or my engine will flip the
prop in reverse for about 3 rounds. Then I have to do the valve tappet
clearance check to make sure I haven't ingested any air in the hydraulic
lifters (as the engine rotated backwards) What a pain that is ! But you won't

have that problem as I am the only one in the country that does,it seems.
                                                    Take care !

      Yes, I run 16 x 6.50 x 8 smooth tread tires by HI-RUN (I'm sure chinese
made). These are ATV or tractor tires which I get for around 40 bucks.
They are made just like what you are talking about (the raised mold
bead). Just enough of a imperfection to make them leak. Sometimes I
get lucky and one wont leak down for a couple months but normally I have
to take the wheel pants off and pump back up to the 10 pounds that I
      use.

I am solving the problem by putting tubes in the tires as I once did
before and I will get rid of the issue. If you put tubes in, make sure
you get the tubes that have the TR-6 type stem. This has the locking
nut to keep the tube in place if the tire rotates on the rim, which it
      can do.

      Good luck.............Kitfox Bill

Lowell,=C2- my sense is that the problem is related to fuel pump/idle mix
ture resulting in flooding at low rpm which is supported by the difficulty
      in hot restart.

John and Lowell, I'm having similar problems (with my 912s) and am quite
sure it relates to low rpm flooding. Another manifestation is extreme
difficulty getting a smooth idle. When I shut down the engine and
immediately pull the carb bowls, the fuel level in the bowls is near the
top instead of about one-half inch below the top as it should be. The
vibration, of course, causes fuel to flow out of the carb vent vent tube
outlet. I haven't tried installing the carb float valve with the
stronger spring. This will be my next step. Any other thoughts?

As long as we're at it, what do you do about kickback while trying to
start? Especially in the winter. I've tried all sorts of start
procedures and have installed the "soft start" module. The module
seemed to help but the problem is still there. Any thoughts guys?

Speaking of removing the wheel pants to access the valve stem, I
solved that problem by cutting an approx. 1-3/4" hole into the side
of the pants, that I later plugged with a proper-sized plastic
plug...a flat one. Then all I have to do is remove the plug, push the
plane back or forth until the valve stem lines up with the hole. Then
I use three stainless steel valve stem extensions that I had put
together (these go into the tool box in the plane when done), and use
this tool to screw onto the stem, giving me pretty instant access to
      checking pressures or adding air.

One of these days, I may even paint the plug.... : )

no problems mine had the same air in them for 6 year about.

I had one plane here that had a rim leak once.
broke the bead and put on some more tire goop

      never leaked since
I bought a truck load of these tires and sold most of them. not selling
      any more though

there are a few places on line to get them,

Tube might help but I never needed yet. They might just add to the
      issues --something else to leak.

Is anyone else out there in Kitfox Land having trouble with a slow
leak of their King Fox tires? Both of my tires have shown a slow leak
over time and on investigation, they are both leaking at the small
protrusions of rubber where I suspect the rubber was injected into the
tire mold. I just checked one yesterday and found one leak on one side
of the tire and two leaks on the other side. Just wondering if anyone

One of mine has leaked since new. Last month the other started leaking
only faster. Just found cords showing. A lone spot about .625X1.5 in.
The rest of the tires have no noticeable wear. Am not impressed with the
quality of the King Fox. never had a problem with the original 20 year
old tires. Maybe they got hard with age and lasted longer.

As long as we're at it, what do you do about kickback while trying to
start? Especially in the winter. I've tried all sorts of start
procedures and have installed the "soft start" module. The module
seemed to help but the problem is still there. Any thoughts guys?

John and Lowell, I'm having similar problems (with my 912s) and am
quite sure it relates to low rpm flooding. Another manifestation is
extreme difficulty getting a smooth idle. When I shut down the engine
and immediately pull the carb bowls, the fuel level in the bowls is near
the top instead of about one-half inch below the top as it should be.
The vibration, of course, causes fuel to flow out of the carb vent vent
tube outlet. I haven't tried installing the carb float valve with the
stronger spring. This will be my next step. Any other thoughts?

Lowell, my sense is that the problem is related to fuel pump/idle
mixture resulting in flooding at low rpm which is supported by the
      difficulty in hot restart.

I had the same thing happen to me Lowell. I had just bought the
aircraft and my first 3 landings were all dead stick as the engine quit
cold turkey on short final. No way you will catch it with the throttle
      as it stops too quickly.
Set your idle at 1800 on the ground and it will give you a few
hundred more rpm on short final. That most likely will solve your
problem. I haven't had mine stop on me since.
During shutdown you can pull the throttle back a little further
against the stop (below 1800) go to one mag, then the other, then off .
In my case I have to go below 1800 on shutdown or my engine will
flip the prop in reverse for about 3 rounds. Then I have to do the valve
tappet clearance check to make sure I haven't ingested any air in the
hydraulic lifters (as the engine rotated backwards) What a pain that is
! But you won't have that problem as I am the only one in the country
      that does,it seems.
                                                         Take care !

Oh yeah, the elusive "Continual" ;-)

Where can I get one? (I know where the Lycomings come from).

      Glenn,
A local guy has a technique that has helped him over the years. I don't
know if you have tried it. This is from Clint Bazzill. He cranks with
the ignition off for several seconds. Then he lets it sit for several
more seconds. Then ignition on and crank to start. I do this on my 80
hp engine and it seems to help for an easier start. My primary reason
for doing it is to watch the oil pressure rise before actual engine
start. I have only witnessed the shaking on the 100 hp engine so have
no first hand experience with them.
      Lowell

                                                         Take care !

      Harold,
Going back to the original shaved tires, I always had a very slow leak
on the wide tires if I mounted them myself. I was forced to top up the
pressure every couple of weeks or so. This last time, I took them to an
ATV shop and they leak something like the very slow loss of pressure in
my truck tires. I once tried putting a bead of Silicone sealant at the
bead and they held pressure very well unless the bead was disturbed then
      they would leak as before.

Is anyone else out there in Kitfox Land having trouble with a slow leak
of their King Fox tires? Both of my tires have shown a slow leak over
time and on investigation, they are both leaking at the small
protrusions of rubber where I suspect the rubber was injected into the
tire mold. I just checked one yesterday and found one leak on one side
of the tire and two leaks on the other side. Just wondering if anyone
else has noticed this on their tires.

Lowell, I assume you know about the minimum idle speed for the 912 and are
not going below that. -I used to have thrust at landing in my Model IV wi
th a GSC prop and 912UL. -Switching to an Ivoprop allowed landing with fl
atter pitch, which cured that problem.=0A=0AJ Allen @ JAQ -IV Speedster
