I and a buddy put down at SCX because weather conditions were getting bad and we were flying higher and higher to get away from it. We saw the airport below us, and decided it was time to land. I put the left wing down and touched down, and it bounced over onto the right wheel then stuck. The airport manager came driving out to see if I was ok, so it must've been quite a sight. My buddy in his 150 took three tries before he got it down. I've got a picture of the wind sock, and it's straight out. Yes, if I knew then what I know now, I'd have used the cross taxiway and part of the parking lot there to land, but I was a rookie at that point. : ) Yeah, I missed Osh altogether last year....weather was too bad to get around the Chicago area, and by the time it cleared....about Wednesday...I was out of the mood for going. One of them just kept on going after that. Was flat within 1/2 hour. The common theme I am hearing is the soft touch. I can grease them all with a wheel landing, but the three point is still a matter of luck, as much as I try. Am all ears about what I am missing, but think I have heard it all and I think I understand what is going on. At that AOA adjusting pitch to go for the soft touch won't work, I have to learn how to use the throttle to stop it from dropping in, or get the timing right on the roundout. Mix that with a strong crosswind, and the only technique I can think of that guarantees control in a Model 2 at three point speeds is luck. Add a gust, and forget it. I work on it occasionally, but if I lack currency, often the case, I take the less risky way out and wheel it. Already ripped the gear off once, do a search. For me, this a challenging bird, and I have flown a lot. I have gathered parts for a Model IV in my hangar. I have heard a couple of comments about the bush gear that suggest it is more forgiving, might choose that. -------- Jeff Dill Model 2 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=403385#403385 ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 04:48:18 AM PST US From: Lynn Matteson Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Cheng shin tires And as a followup to the landing story, this was the trip where just prior to that, I was seeing 177 mph ground speed on the GPS. We were heading down to Sun 'n' Fun, but quit trying after the winds got so bad. The next day we headed for home....with no wind whatsoever....go figure. I was halfway expecting the answer to be a higher pressure to firm them up. 10 is the max printed on the tire. -------- Jeff Dill Model 2 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=403389#403389 ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 09:30:04 PM PST US From: James Shumaker Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Re: Cheng shin tires Yep, I fly a model III and that sums it up.- =0A-=0AJim Shumaker=0A2002 Model III Rotax 912ul 1200 hours=0A =0A=0A________________________________ =0A From: Jeffrey Dill <1dillfamily@gmail.com>=0ATo: kitfox-list@matronics. com =0ASent: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 4:45 AM=0ASubject: Kitfox-List: Re: Che 1dillfamily@gmail.com>=0A=0AI have not had a chance to try it again, but I did lower the pressure to 4 PSI last night.
