Skot,
I too had a hard time getting my 4 on the ground until I figured out my
approach speed was too high and the engine idle also too high.
I now use an approach speed of around 55 mph and my idle is set around
2000 on short approach (equates to 1800 on the ground) Using a combination of
slips and flaps as speed brakes if I am too high, also helps.
I think if you play with the approach speed by slowing down earlier
and/or maybe a lower pattern altitude you will get the hang of it.
When I first bought my plane(years ago) The engine quit on final for the
first 3 landings until I got the idle where I wanted it.My idle rpm on
approach is still a little fast but I can live with it and haven't adjusted it
yet.

Skot,
Congratulations on the purchase, The Vixen is a great plane, I fly an
Outback, tail dragger version of the 5, would rather the tri-gear version. I
have experienced the same issues with getting it down and the advice the
guys on the list have been giving you has been exactly my experience,
forward slips to give up the altitude and bleeding off the speed earlier
along with watching your pattern altitude, I am only running the 80 hp
912ul, my approach is 60 over the fence, working on getting it to 55 mph. I
land with 1 notch of flaps currently. I have also experienced the engine
quitting on final and have my idle at 2000 on approach, working on bringing
that to 1800, hopefully without quitting. Also some great advise on climb
angle, especially on take-off, I read an article about a guy and his father
at a small local grass strip show, he departed and climbed steep, the engine
quit, he did not have enough altitude between the plane and the ground for
it to rotate and get flying again, it did not end well.
Fly Safe!!!

Subject: Kitfox-List: New Kitfox Vixen for me, network with others?
Greetings Kitfox Folks,
I just flew home my new Kitfox Vixen Model 5 (with Rotax 912 ULS & Ivo prop)
and am getting to know it.
First impressions: The climb angle is very steep, cruise speed is pretty
fast & glide ratio is very flat (I am having a hard time "getting it down")
Anyone with pointers feel free to bring them up.
Thanks much,
Skot
