the courage to bring up something that is troubling me flying wise.
I have lost significant hearing - to the point that air to air or air

use hearing aids and have hard wired the audio from the radio to the
receiver/controller I wear around my neck. I talks to the hearing aids

now if it was the radio or the hard wiring to the thing around my neck.
Does anyone else have this problem and if so what have you done to

I do have an opinion on the list, though. I much prefer the list format and
am still monitoring any traffic. In the old days, I read every post whethe
r it was a Model I with 582 or a SS with 0-235. I learned a lot and learned
to respect a lot of the guys with real names and real locations. After wri
ting that, I realized I still do the same - I still read every post. With t
he "Topic" format, I find I don't read everything, especially the long disc
ussions that don't interest much and I'm sure I miss a lot. I will often ch
eck the Personal Profiles on the TK Forum and am amazed how many guys want
help or to help but are hiding behind screen names with little other identi
fication and no location.
For nine years I hosted a Kitfox fly-in at my home in a residential airpark
and the best part of it was the people. We'd get a hundred or so with thir
ty or forty airplanes. It wasn't the airplanes that drove the effort, but t
he people. Then to the factory fly-in. Real names from the list, vs. screen
names from the Forum? I'm talking to some one and don't have a clue who I'
m talking to because I only know him as "Lift Strut" or something.

I also have hearing lose. You may have already done this but breaking the
piggy bank and buying an active noise reduction head set helped the most.

Pat,
Yes, I do understand the uniqueness of the building quality of sites like t
hese,
and agree that's why most posts are centered around building. I'm just not
smart
enough, nor willing to put in the time to build. I just want to fly. I have
to
admit I, too, have gleaned a lot of info from the builders' discussions and
have
added many mods to my plane because of their discussions. All good stuff. M
y
point was that my personal main interest is the adventures and thrill of fl
ight
I get from my Kitfox, and that I like to share those with others.
I don't think the TKF site is set up to email you. My understanding is you
are
required to get on the site thru the internet. If it helps, once you log-on
and
put in your password, there is a box to check which will automatically log
you
in each time you go to the site, just like this site will do.

Dave,
That would be a dream come true. but then I have to mention an
experience while test flying the new airplane out of Lincoln Harder,
North of Sacramento. I would always fly the test flights over the rice
and tomato fields because of the flat and test friendly ground below.
Then on return I would fly East for a bit past the airport so I could
make a standard approach to 15, reporting over the sawmill. One day on
the way to my entry, after hearing all the muffled gibberish (to me)
radio calls, I heard this - "Citation ??????? Approaching Lincoln
Harder, 15 miles out on a straight in for runway 15". This was crisp
and clear. No question who or what or where. I couldn't believe it. It
sort of surprised me to learn that much of my problem is that my ears
won't clean up what is in reality typically very poor transmissions.
That Citation had good avionics and was professionally maintained. Most
of the rest of us just hope for the best.

Kitfox Folks,
I think the more information sources the better!
I recently bought a used Kitfox Vixen. One of the deciding factors for me
is the large numbers of Kitfox copies out there and their owners
experiences to share with others. I have communicated with others on both this
list
and the Kitfox Forum (which is apparently monitored by the McBeans Kitfox
Factory as well). So far, I have been able to get the parts I need from
the McBeans, as well as advice on technical matters from both sites.

I also wondered about the drop in postings. Went to Osh and didn't see that
many Kitfoxes. I am completing my Mod 4 1200 Speedster now. The engine is
a Viking and I plan on adding smoke and trying my hand at skywriting. I
also am adding the convertible wing tips so the additional 3 feet of wing
can be added when needed. I sold my Mod 2, 2 years ago to make room for
the Lancair 360, now flying. When I finish the Mod 4, I will get to work on
the next build, a Lancair Super ES. It will be a treat to fly the speedster
with a real 4 cycle engine and 110 horses by Honda. The 582 flew fine,
until it stopped. Fortunately I was over a runway. The idea of a cross
country flight behind a 582 just never felt good. We have a big feral hog
problem near Dallas, so the Speedster will be a good gun platform with the
doors off. Pork chops, anyone?

Too many chainsaws and helicopters in my life have ruined my ears. I broke down
and got hearing aids this year. The guy said I have moderate hearing loss in
the frequency where children's voices are and sever loss in the frequency where
women's voices are.
There's been some pretty good advances in hearing aids the past few years. He programed
them on a computer to match my hearing loss. I can now hear things I
haven't heard for a ling time...like birds chirping.
I haven't worn them in the kitfox yet. Mine is very noisey. I have a good ANR
headset and my KX99 is very clear. My problem is there is a college flight program
here and those kids talk so darn fast.
If the other plane has a clear transmission and talks normal I can under stand
them. If too fast or a crappie radio I can't.

Subject: | Trailering Kitfox and flying spectacular spots |
Kitfox Folks,
With the idea of sharing Kitfox (folding wing plane) fun with others on
this site, here goes.
My wife and I are snow birds with places off Chesapeake Bay and in the
Florida Keys, so warm weather local Kitfox flying is year around for us.
For over ten years I could not get hanger space in the Keys so kept our
Kitfox IV in a custom car trailer.
Making a long story short, over time, I started towing the trailer and
plane all over the US behind a conversion van type motorhome. We drop the
trailer/plane at local airports near spectacular low and slow flying
locations. This lets us "See the USA in OUR Chevrolet and LSA", flying
when the flying is great and touring by land otherwise.
Favorite locations include national park areas in the south west along the
Colorado River (Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Moab - Arches,
Islands in the Sky, Valley of the Gods, etc), Florida Keys, Gulf Coast
beaches, and Down East Maine particularly around Acadia/Bar Harbor.
Over time, quite a few lessons have been learned from experience and
experimentation that make the over all process quicker, easier, less
expensive and more fun.
Happy to share some of my tricks with others who may be doing the same or
who have wondered how practical it might be, and of course look forward to
picking up new tricks from others as well.
BJ

As an aside I will probably do "How To Do It" Power Point forums and
display the trailer/plane setup at Sebring and Sun N Fun again this year.
Oh, I do this this just for fun, no sales or vender support is involved.

Subject: | Heavy right wing |
Hi Kitfoxers
I did a test flight yesterday (Kitfox IV rebuild) and the plane would not stay
on the same course and required lots of left stick. If I let go of the stick and
keep the ball centered, the plane banks to the right. Fuel contents in each
wing were approximately equal.
On the ground with the plane level I measured the angle of each wing and found
that the right wing has a slightly lower angle of attack than the left wing -
about 0.5 degrees.
Is this enough of a difference in your opinion to cause so much difference? What
else could be the cause? (When I have more time I am going to go through
and check the dihedral and wing washout as well but I'm curious wether I am on
the right track here).

Steve, It's really advantageous to have the posts automatically sent to
you. I almost never "log into" this site. I monitor the posts and reply
occasionally. I learned a great deal of information and familiarized myself
with the members without ever logging into the site just by following the

I'm going to say definitely. Really, you have only a few choices, plus
some also-rans. Choices:
* Wing twist different - noted.
* Wing weight different. Check using scales under the mains. This
happens occasionally in flight when one tank drains while the
other is full.
* Flaperon rigging off. If one flaperon is low this will drag that
wing back. You'll center the ball with the rudder which will cause
that wing to lift, resulting in a feeling of miss-rigging.
Also rans:
* Twisted fuselage causing one wing to lead.
* Really bad wing rigging causing one wing to lead. (Wings not
perpendicular to fuselage.)
* Accidentally put wing extension on only one side.

Tom,
I was at Sams Club having a gourmet hot dog and I am sure folks wondered
what I was laughing about. It put a smile on my face until I had to start
the Honey Dos at Target. "Earwigs" is classic. My wife just says, "Are
your ears in"? I have learned to put them in as soon as I wake up in the
morning to avoid watching her mouth move then look at me expectantly. My
wife is in Orlando keeping warm.

Pat,
I am using a Canon HF S30. They are out of production but I found one
on ebay. It came with original packaging for about half the original
price. I wanted Zoom and focus capability. I guess as soon as I finish
my set-up and get it going, GoPro will introduce Zoom and focus. The
reason I looked for the HF S30 is because it has LanC capability. LanC
allows me to plug a controller in a mini stereo jack and it gives me
Camera On/Off, Record On/Off, Proportional zoom - hit the zoom hard and
it is quick, touch it softly and it zooms very slowly, an Auto/Manual
Focus switch and the ability to manually focus. With autofocus on and
trying to record an airplane in the air nearby, the sensors will often
search all over the field and never find what it is looking for. All
this in a controller that will attach to the control joy stick with a
three wire cable that runs to the jack on the camera. Now only three
wires to the camera, LanC, Power and the video out for the monitor. The
only thing it doesn't have is aperture control which is desirable, but
in our new world so many things .... Don't want to go there. It also
records to SDHC cards which will give minimum of nine hours of recording
time - vs. the one hour tape drive - and has slots for two removable
SDHC cards for 18 more hours. So now a whole trip without having to
remove the camera from the mount.

I had a video camera mount on my first IV and can't seem to live

miserable failures. It also had to be on a controllable gimbal mount.
I think I am almost finished and am more optimistic this time. Then
what, though.
I gotta say this though, I am glad to see some of the names who have

Mike,
In the perfect world, I would like to see voice recognition that would
show the spoken words as text on a screen. Something like the voice
capable GPSs. I would like to talk, but receive in text. I guess if
there were dialogue sequences that could be clicked on it would help, as
I don't type very well either.

Subject: | Trailering Kitfox and flying spectacular spots |
Allan,
Among the lessons learned from others is that a Kitfox is subject to frame
bending ahead of the tail if the braces supplied by Kitfox to support the
wings when folded are not in place and the plane is bounced down the road
on a trailer with a STIFF suspension. This could really ruin your day and
pocketbook. Use the braces!
I have heard reports of folks strapping the plane down to a trailer by
going over the folded wings. By doing that they bent structural stuff as
the plane bounced up and down on the gear, stressing plane parts not meant
to handle that kind of stuff. Don't do it.
Another report was of a fellow who strapped his plane down to floor tie
down rings. The plywood floor had some rot and the tie down rings pulled
free, letting the plane beat itself up in the trailer as it bounced down
the road. Lesson learned the hard way.
I tried strapping over the main gear tires, a technique many car trailer
operators use. The plane still wanted to bounce around on the gear pretty
badly. The plane also bounced some on the tires as they compressed. This
was no good.
So I quickly adopted strapping the plane down at the float attach points.
These are built to take stress. Then tightening these ratchet straps
tight, putting down force on the gear and the tires. This really cuts the
bouncing tendency. Safely securing the plane in the trailer for a lot of
long distance towing is a big deal and of course there is more to it.
Putting 3 inch thick foam pads between the folded wings and trailer walls
provides a second line of defense against bouncing around and damage.
This has worked well for maybe 100,000 miles of towing the plane over the
years.
There are more little tricks but these are probably the most important and
easiest to describe.
To be price competitive, Most 7,000 lb gross weight trailers come stock
with cheap, minimum size, Chinese load range C tires. I have over a dozen
trailers and hate these cheap tires. They pop way before they wear out and
at the worst, least safe time and places. Read rush hour, night, rain,
with no shoulder. (Avoid this type of towing.) Since I have been using
load range E tires this problem is way less frequent.
A bunch of the South Florida boat trailer builders who make trailers for
really big trailer boats (read four 350 hp outboard motors), and the local
boat trailer shops who service these trailers automatically go with load
range E passenger truck tires. They claim that after the national
headlines on Firestone tire failures and Ford Explorer rollovers a decade
or more ago, passenger truck tire regulation and quality control went way
up but cheap imported trailer tires are still @%$#!
I guess the last serious lesson "learnt" was when i purchased our first
conversion van with big block Chevy engine. The power was great, loved it.
The vehicle was rated for higher towing weights than I was towing BUT the
overhang between rear axle and hitch ball was pretty long creating a long
lever arm and the fishtail tendency was amazing, (read scared the heck out
of me). A quality Load leveler hitch and anti sway bars could not correct
this problem. Sold it.
Subsequently I have done test drives with a lot of small to medium RVs
with my trailers in tow, and found most to be marginal tow vehicles due to
poor physics (read short wheel base and long rear overhangs). The 190
series Roadtreks on 3500 Chevy Express Van chassis handle well and have
long wheel bases plus SHORT rear overhangs (good physics for towing).
I guess there is one more lesson learned. Not everyone was born to tow a
trailer. My wife is a truly smart lady. She manages psychiatrists for a
living. However, after some run ins with trailer fenders, mail boxes and
the like we have established a differentiation of duties which works well
for all involved regarding towing. The universe is now back in harmony.

I had the same problem with my Model IV when I first started flying it. I ended
up adjusting the rod ends, tightening one 1/2 turn then loosening the other 1/2
turn. First one wing then the other. I had to go through several iterations

What else could be the cause? (When I have more time I am going to go through

on the right track here).
