    I used this stuff <http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/heatbarriers.php> extensively. My 582 exhaust elbow used to come within 1" of it on the inside of my cowl with no deleterious effects. The only down side is that eventually the adhesive fails and you have to replace it.
