I use this stuff

over the place. Bear in mind, though, that its purpose is to reflect
radiant heat, and not to insulate against convective heat. Thus it works
really well to protect from hot exhaust system components that are
radiating at 600-1500F. I doubt it would do much to insulate against the
hot air inside the cowl.

You might want to take a look at the baffling under the cowl. Streamlining the
airflow into the cowl will help you reduce the temperature. I had a similar
problem awhile back and restructuring the cowl baffle reduced the temperature
significantly.
