Try running the oil pressure's power input wire directly to the battery, just as
a test. There might be a voltage drop in the electrical bus when you turn on
loads.

Subject: | Re: Electrical Issue |
Mike,
While I didnt have the problem with my Kitfox, I did have it on my RV-7A. My problem
was with oil temp, but the same logic is applicable. I changed the sensor
and still had the problem. Checked the grounds and alternator, still couldnt
solve it. Added a new ground strap on the sensor directly to the engine ground.
Nothing worked. However I noticed with the alternator off, the sensor
worked perfectly. Weird. A friend suggested a long charging wire for the battery,
from my hangar to the airplane, while in flight, but a thousand mile wire
didnt seem to be the answer:-)
Finally, with all the troubleshooting info in hand, AFS recommended a 2 wire sensor.
Not only did I do that, but I wired the sensor ground directly to the avionics
bus on the firewall. Even with no resistance between the airframe and
engine, Im told the slight voltage drop between the engine and airframe was enough
to screw up the sensor. I didnt understand this, but it solved the problem.
Lesson Learned: Its always the darn ground - even when it checks out good it
isnt. Go figure.
Good luck! Hope this helped.

weldment as a ground is the easy solution but, in my experience, it seldom
provides reliable performance. My starter solenoid was originally wired that
way and it seemed like everything was good but, after a while, I realized it was
only working intermittently. Running a wire from the solenoid to a good ground
fixed the problem.

trying to ground through it's attachment, which can frequently be a problem.
I changed my single wire sender to a double wire with dedicated ground for that
reason. Otherwise there might be a problem with your engine ground strap.

I replace the oil pressure gauge and the problem persisted.

let alone solve the problem. I didn't just change the oil pressure gauge
as a shot in the dark hoping for a fix, there were a few other things which
didn't seem right with the gauge. However, I really don't want to begin buying
and replacing parts just to see if it fixes the problem. This can get expensive.
