Subject: | Kitfox Mk2 Wing dihedral |
I built my model 3 with 4 wings and controls with =C2=BD degree
dihedral. This was intentional as I wanted to reduce drag. I consider
the handling good in most conditions, but there is little control
harmony in the early kitfoxes. Very sensitive pitch, strong roll and
lots of rudder needed all the time. They always seem to need some
rudder as IMO the empennage is a bit short and the tail and rudder are a
bit small. Gap seals help for landing control at slow speeds.
The handling described below I think has more to do with the wings than
the angles. Model 3 wing has a lot of camber and therefore more drag.
Model 4 wing and controls are better, especially the differential
flaperon controls = less adverse yaw. (I also owned a model 2).
My 3/4 flies hands off in calm air at about 95MPH. I have electric
elevator trim tab and a fixed trim tab on the rudder set for this speed.
Just takes some getting used to.
Hope this helps!

Hi Guy
Great to hear you're still around. I agree with you with you. My Model
III had closer to 3 degrees, It flew great hands off, but the Rudder
did not keep it straight.

It's user preference, based on both aesthetics and controls. For
controls, the less dihedral the less positive stability in roll. My IV
had 1/2 degree per side. It would not fly straight and level hands-off,
but would roll off onto one side or the other. It also had very low
yaw-roll coupling, meaning it took a lot of yaw (rudder input) to get it
to roll. The aesthetics were nice, though.
