Larry,Gang,
I was calling from memory when I posted the site for the micro cleaning cloth.
Here is the site for the ones I use and yes they work great! Not only on the Lexan
but the whole plane. All you have to do is keep it damp. I keep mine in a
plastic Ziploc bag and rinse it out with clear water from time to time. As for
the sand and dust I recommend and use the original California Dash Duster. It
is great for removing sand and dust and will not scratch Lexan or painted surface.
If you can't find a source for these let me know. I sell them in my store
and can ship them to you via UPS.

There are a few Kolb pilots out here on the west coast, though not a lot on
our list. The 'problem' is the weather has been so nice (at least in
southern California) that we are flying all the time.
I live in the Santa Barbara area, flying out of Santa Ynez, if you want to
stop buy and have a look. It is a really beautiful place to fly,
especially now when the grass is green.
Boyd, if you are listening, Im thinking about another Monument Valley
attempt. Maybe this spring? Meet me in Moab!

Hi Will / Gang,
I usually try not to comment on gas questions, but on this one I felt I
needed to. Kind of self defense I guess. I work in a large 300,000 barrel
per day Chevron oil refinery in the Blending & Shipping section where gas is
blended and loaded on trucks, ships and barges along with many other
activities. We are in the top three or so volume wise of product loaded
across the water and blend thousands of barrels of gas a day (can get the
average numbers if needed). It is also shipped up a major pipeline system
that goes all the way up the east coast. I can't speak for all refinery's
but when we are blending a tank of gas there are no additives added to help
boost octane. Different components or cuts from the crude oil have varying
octane properties and different crudes yield different amounts of the
components. Also there are different refining methods which yield higher
octane components or more components that I don't have the experience or
space to go into here. We have a very stringent set of guidelines that have
to be met in order to sell any tank of gas. We have online analyzers to
assist in making sure it is ontest but the major piece of equipment used for
the octane rating is a set of engines that is used industry wide called
Comoc engines. They have to be certified accurate by a trained technician
using a gasoline with a known octane rating. When we blend a tank of gas the
engines are being fed a steady stream of the gas being blended. The average
of the entire blend has to meet the specification of the gas being blended.
We currently blend 87 octane unleaded and 93 octane supreme and these two
are mixed at a ratio to make the Plus grade gas with 89 octane. We also
blend 100/130 avgas but that's a different ballgame all together. The gas we
sell is sold from the average results from these engines. If it meets the
octane specification for the grade being blended then nothing else is done
for octane. We have a fully staffed Lab and there are many other
specifications that have to be certified by them before the gas can be sold.
If the average octane number is low, then a correction will be made to the
tank of gas and the Lab has to run what we refer to as "manual motors" to
establish the octane rating for that tank of gas. This is simply an average
sample of the gas after the correction has been added to the tank, mixed
thoroughly and run on a set of Comoc engines at the Lab.
After all this the gas is either loaded on trucks, ships, barges or sent
up the pipeline system. I have heard people many times swear that they
wouldn't use a certain brand gas etc., but the fact is all gas comes from
crude oil. We load gas on other major brands trucks, ships and barges. In
other words you may be burning Exxon gas that was blended in a Chevron or BP
refinery etc. The difference in the different brands is the additive package
they use. Normally this is advertised as making your engine run cleaner etc.
Don't know what everyone else calls their additive, but the Chevron additive
is Techron. At our truck rack we have several different additive tanks for
the different company's loading gas. The trucks have a card key that is
inserted in a computer system and this tells the system what additive to add
while the gas is being loaded onto the truck. All the gas loaded on ships
and barges has the additive added elsewhere. I would like to emphasize again
that I'm not a spokesperson for the industry. This is the basic method used
in our refinery.
Sorry this got so long winded.

Include me in on your Monument Valley Flight. Jim
Heffner clued me in on his flight recently. He
has been up there 6 times, but once with his
Firestar. Let me see if I can find his web page.
He has some nice shots of the Valley posted. I
was there a couple Octobers ago, but on the
ground. He says it is dramatically different
(better) from the air in a Kolb.

John,
Very informative post, and thankyou very much ! Maybe you can help me with
some info that has bet put forward to me in my biz. (I am a sales rep or an
engine manufacturer) In the engine biz, gasoline questions come up very
often!
Do I understand that ALL the gasoline sold in the united states at retail
must conform to the standards regulated by the US government?,, and that in
the formulas for making gasoline, there are mandated "recipies" that all
refineries must use as mandated?
Any additive packages requested by a "retailing company" must be from the
approved list?
I have believed that gasoline is similiar to prescription drugs, and no
matter what the brand label, there are only certain recipies and ingredients
that may be used.
About the only thing I know for sure, is that in the mandated :"reformulated
gas areas" the gasoline is indeed changed from a summer blend to a winter
blend according to law, and that can cause starting problems if you use a
summer "reformulated gasoline" in the winter. I believe it has to do with
reed vapor pressures and outside air temps which cause the gasoline in low
compression ratio 4 strokes(8 to 1)to be very hard to start.
I am not sure that this would be the case with a 2 cycle, as they usually
are of a higher compression ratio and might work on it.
Your info might make me more(or less) confidant in believing what I think I
know!!!!!

John, don't apologize....this subject is usually clouded with folklore
and hearsay.
It's good to hear some real facts. One extra question: I've read somewhere
that the vapor pressure is adjusted for the season or climate that the
juice will
be used in. -Higher VP for cold weather, etc. What's the truth to this?

In my FireStar it's only a day flight from El Paso to Monument Valley. If I
can work it in my schedule count me in.
Right now I'm working in Mississippi next week I'll be in Arizona and then
two weeks in California. But I may be able to work around my projects so I
can make it to the Monument Valley fly-in. I'm sure Dave Rains would love to
go and maybe Raul in his FireStar. Our FlightStar driver has been talking
about going so he may want to go and we have a new X Air driver we my
persuade to go.

Hi Will/Gents:
Only takes one to fly and two to have a flyin. We
already got more than that, so lets start working
on a date?
Since I am a Southeasterner, I will be the guest.
Primarily cause I don't know s__t about the West,
other than it is very big, very high (in places)
and has a lot of sharp pointy rocks. Also very
dry most of the time and the wind can blown like
no where else. What did I leave out?
I am serious about packing the bags, loading the
MK III and heading westerly...........
Need to do it before it gets to hot, like before
June?
I am only suggesting, cause I am not that familiar
with you all's side of America.
Let's get it together. Jim Heffner can clue us in
on the airstrip/camp ground he and his family
stayed at. Maybe there are others that would like
to drive and pull their Kolbs. How about all you
RVers on the List? There is a bunch of you guys.
Ready to dig out my maps and water bottles.

John, Will and others:
Seeing the interest in a flyin at Monument Valley gets me excited to do it again!I
did it this past mid May, which was perfect temps and an ideal time to go.
Early mornings were calm and winds died in the evening for sunset flights. Will
and Dave also flew out of Gouldings Lodge airstrip like I did. My daughter and
I camped in my trailer up in their campground, which is outstanding, with all
facilities - $25/night. I calledup thereand requested permission to use their
private strip and faxed them a letter for their file, effectively relieving
them of any liability responsibility, which is all they really wanted, even
though they asked for copies of liability insurance, etc.
Having a bunch of guys from all over, come together up therewould be a blast!!!
John, glad to see you're ready to go!! Any other info needed or Q's anyone has,
let me know.
Here's a link to my website to wet your whistle if you're on the fence. Click next
to see more when you get there.

====================================

Used the information you sent me about the push pull cables, thanks.
Do you have any knowledge on Napa parts for the VW Thing, typw 181, 1973
model. Looking for front and rear shocks and new tie rod ends, specifically
the drivers outside.
Know this is not a Kolb question, but can't fly all the time. Gotta tinker on
some of the other projects.
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim/Gents:
I'm not the List moderator, wouldn't want the job
if you paid me for it. However, I think I would
have to ask myself if the post was of interest to
the rest of the gang on the Kolb List.
Personally, I have no interest in VW Things. This
shoulda gone bc to Paul Petty, or whoever you
intended to receive it. If you look at that,
intended for one person, it only makes sense to
send it to him and not the other couple hundred or
so folks on the Kolb List.
Also, I think if it has no value for the future in
the Kolb List Archives, it should have the
notation of DO NOT ARCHIVE at the bottom of the
post.
I think a lot of us have been a little lax at what
we have been posting. I know I am guilty and
gonna try a little harder.
Take care,
john h

Vamoose is back together, re-drive on, and ready for the prop; new fuel
lines installed; fuel tank, ready for re-start;
(hopefully) and will be making the trip up to the covering shop in Yucca
Valley next Monday. I can't believe how much "hangar rash" the tail
feathers have already sustained. Amazing, since it hasn't even seen a
hangar yet. (I still haven't decided for sure if Vamoose is a "he," "she,"
or "it.") Wings, flaps, and ailerons are already up there; finished,
waiting for me, and ready for the hinges. I also published 2 pics of the
door lexan on photoshare yesterday, looking for words of wisdom from you
guys. C'mon, Matt ! ! ! When the guy in Yuckey Valley is done covering
the fuselage, (pod ??) it'll be ready for new doors, (probably), final
assembly, and a visit from the FAA man. I guess I'm a gonna hafta start
digging around, getting the paperwork ready. Finally..............starting
to feel the good ol' GoGittum feeling again. 'Bout bloody time ! ! ! This
past year has been a long 'un. Wore Out Lar.
