Hey Lar
If your wings are done and the cage is getting done you may just make
it in time for the monument valley flight. Might take a bit of serious
overtime but it is possible. We're all pullin for ya.

Yes I agree with your comments/observations. The main reasons I went to
powder coating was the expense and the hassle factor. For under 200 bucks
they will do it, inclusive of mild sand blasting of some corrosion. All I
had to do was stick the front portion of the cage into the Suburban as far
as it goes, tie it down, take it to Tucson, and then pick it up Wedensday. I
am glad you reminded me of the pedals. I will call them first thing Monday
and tell them to mask the tube slides for the pedals. We were infact
discussing the very thing when I was there. I think that part (unless I hear
other suggestions) can be lightly coated with that two part epoxy primer
after a good sanding, riveted in place and then spray-can (Rust Oleum'ed)
painted. Can't waite to get it back and start on the final stage of the
build. Been thinking as to why your motor froze, if nothing is broke it
should start turning after you break the ring to cylinder contact. I am not
sure what kinda cylinder liner the VW has but if its steel rings and bore it
just may have rusted together. Once you break that contact it should move
freely with some oil, and work fine.

Far as me and most others are concerned, you and everybody else - in any
kind of flying machine, or anything else, is more than welcome. Guru John
has already said the same thing, as well. I'm inviting a friend who has a
gyro copter, and he's gonna try and make it - with the gyro in a truck. Too
far to fly that little toy, but it's a neat thing. It may happen (hope not)
that I'll show up in a pickup/camper. If so, I'll be begging rides.
Anyone who says you're not welcome (can't even picture THAT) is gonna start
the biggest war this List has ever seen. Which plane are you bringing ??

Thanks Woody..................I had a bit of a tussle with myself this
morning. Monthly EAA meeting is at 9:00 AM, and I already have my flight
bag out, ready to go do some pattern work afterwards. No excuse for letting
skills lapse (which, sadly, I've done) while building.
Still...................wanted to pitch all that, and get into that engine.
EAA/pattern work won. If I'm a gonna fly Vamoose, I'm a gonna be ready.

I hope & think that you're right. We'll find out about those rings/bores
this afternoon...............after the EAA meeting, and an hour or so of
pattern work, and altitude manuevers. I've gone from an average of an hour
a week - for 6 years - to less than an hour a month average these past 2
years. Not goot ! ! ! Gotta find some other planes to play in, as well,
so I don't get Cessna fixated in my habits. Your powder coating will be
fine..............I was pointing out alternatives, is all. Have at 'er, old

boyd/Gang:
Well, it has lit a fire under me too. I am one of
those "different" type folks that has to have some
kind of goal/commitment to shoot for. If I don't
have something to look forward to, I soon become a
little depressed and despondent.
Now I have a nice flight to look forward to, plus
meeting old friends and making new ones.
I'm really getting excited about flying in this
part of the country. After having spent a short
time on the ground looking up, I think I am going
to enjoy flying around the whole area looking down
to do my site seeing.
Be nice if we can get something set up with the
Lodge to feed us, maybe have one night for a
special supper. How far is the lodge/food from
the airstrip? I will be roughing it, if the
weather is not too bad. Prices for rooms will buy
me a lot of fuel to get home on.
My GPS is in my airplane, so haven't done any
preflight planning yet. Will probably go over and
pick it up so I can get an idea how far it is to
Monument Valley from Gantt International Airport.
Not sure which route I will take to get there and
back either.
Maybe we can talk the Kolb Company gang into
sending someone out with a company airplane.
Would be a good flight for Bruce Chesnut in the
Pelican, or whatever they call the new trigear
speedster. Or better yet, the new model MK III
Extra. Be a good chance to display its abilities.
About three or four months until time to go. We
can finalize all our plans at Sun and Fun the
first week in April.
See ya'll there,
john h

It sounds as though you will be allright then, the outfit that did mine put

I don't know why this was even brought up. It never accrued to me for non
Kolbs not to fly to Monument Valley. As I posted on my original message
about the Monument Valley flight. I planed to invite friends from our
airport. Having discussions with the Flight Star driver, he said he doesn't
have room for camping gear or carry extra fuel. The X-Air's landing gear
broke yesterday in the hanger so now the owner has to order a new shock from
India, France or Australia.

Subject: | Rotax 532 & radiator for sale |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <rwpike@charter.net>
Was trying to decide whether to zero time my 532 or buy a 582, and then
found a zero time 582 at a price I liked. So now I have a 65 hp 532 to
sell. I think it would make someone a good inexpensive engine, & the Kolb
list gets first crack at it:
Late style 532, bleed vents in the head, has the thermostat.
Single ignition, upgraded to Airscrew Performance CDI components, starts
easy, runs very smooth.
136 pounds compression in one cylinder, 138 in the other.
Pistons and cylinders look perfect, no scratches.
Rings look good, wrist pins and bearings good.
Rotary valve assembly appears perfect, no water leaks.
2.58:1 B box, oil comes out very clean at every change.
Needs a new or rebuilt crank, the gear that turns the rotary valve has
slipped on the present crank, was running good up until then.
Airscrew Performance will rebuild the crank for $575. If the gear needs
replacing, then probably need to add the cost of the gear.
Carbs and side exhaust.
No recoil start, & I'm keeping my electric starter for the new engine.
Also will include the radiator off my MKIII, just found one that is longer
and narrower, easier to cowl in. (Still on the quest for speed) Current
radiator already has brackets and shroud to fit my MKIII.
$800 for the engine as is, you rebuild it.
If you want me to rebuild it, my labor costs are about nil, but you will
pay up front for the parts, will replace as much as you want.
Can send .jpg pictures of all the components, they are sitting in various
plastic tubs, you ought to get an idea of the condition from the pictures.

If it is cloudy, most likely replacement will save
you a lot of work, hassle, time, not necessarily
money. Try some automotive wax/polish/cleaner.
If they doesn't remove the cloudiness, replace
with new lexan.
I spent a lot of time, money for an expensive kit,
and a lot of elbow grease to find out I could not
salvage a lexan windshield on my Firestar. Does
not recoup like plexiglass.

Thanks, John. That's pretty much how I feel, but I sent that to photoshare
a week ago, and have been busy since. The guy who's doing the covering has
some stuff that he says may just do the job. I believe it's the kit that AC
Spruce sells. He'll give it a short effort to see how it goes, and if it
doesn't look like a winner, he'll quit. Meantime, I'm leaving that lexan on
there for the duration of the covering process. When Vamoose comes home in
his new clothes, he'll get new eyes, too. Lar.
