Dates sound good to me too. I'll be picking up Dennis Kirby on the way,
providing he hasn't flown the required hours of his MK III. Will make
arrangements with Goulding.
Really enjoyed my last flight around the monuments.

That is my ETA, 18 May or earlier. Depends on how
long it takes to fly, wind and weather.
I will also make coordination for myself with
Goulding about flying in and camping. If no one
shows up but me, I will be covered. Where's the

Gene/Gents:
Call Ronnie Smith at South Mississippi Lt Acft.
Get the values for checking your ign system with a
multimeter.
I tried getting the info out of the online
maintenance manual for 447 from Kodiak, but there
isn't anything in them, or I missed the info.
Then get a young football player from FSU to pull
the starter rope for you.
Unusual for an engine to run fine. Shut it down.
Then refuse to start. But it happens.
Especially unusual for ign system to go belly up.
They seldom do, but possible.
Try cussing the 447 then kick the $HIT out of it.
Sometimes that works for me. If not, then say a
little prayer and be nice to it.
Will try to fly down to Panacea next week. Maybe
the weather will get straightened out by then.
Need a break and some good seafood.
Take care,

Kolbers,
I'd seen the dates but wasn't sure they were locked in - now I know. I think
making our own arrangements is fine too - can do eeeeeasy. My plan is to RV
up there and then to Brian Ranch - that fly in has always been a goal of mine.
Now about insurance. Where do I get it? Would someone give me the name of
an insurance company I can use and some idea of what it costs.
(Oh by the way, thanks for the credit Lar, but it wasn't me who provided the
names and numbers. Someone else did that and my thanks to him.)

John old buddy, one of the things I like about the list is the lack of
public profanity.
Many people (the greater public) read this list and some of them may not be
as a accepting of that as some others. You could substitute some other
terms.
You being one of the senior members of this list, I am surprised at that.

John/whom it may concern...
There is a seafood flight getting organized for Feb 22. A couple of
planes from Jones Light, several from LaGrange, and I suspect a few from
Eufaula/Polemus as well. If anyone wants to join up then let me know
and I get specifics to ya. Leaving out early to get lunch and do some
beach flying...

Subject: | Space shuttle Columbia |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: bob n <ronoy@shentel.net>
Subject: Morning Star?
This week Columbia will fly over many US towns and cities. The best time
to watch is around daybreak, but if you
oversleep and miss it one day--no problem. You can see it the next at
almost exactly the same time. For example,
on Tuesday, Jan. 28th, sky watchers in Washington D.C. can see Columbia
glide nearly overhead at 6:01 a.m. local
time. On Jan. 29th it will appear at 6:00 a.m.. On January 30th it will
appear at 5:57 a.m.... and so on until the
shuttle lands on Feb. 1st.
To find out when to look from your hometown, check one of these web
sites: Science@NASA's J-Pass
(http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/RealTime/JPass/) , Chris Peat's Heavens
Above
(http://www.heavens-above.com/), or the Johnson Space Flight Center's
Skywatch
(http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/). Each will ask for
your zip code or city, and respond
with a schedule of suggested spotting times.
The space shuttle flying overhead at dawn is really a beautiful sight.
You'll spot it first in the western sky not too
far from Jupiter. The giant planet is brighter than the shuttle, but not
much. Both are among the brightest
"stars" in the morning sky. Columbia will glide slowly eastward toward
Venus and the rising Sun. The shuttle takes
about 6 minutes to travel from one horizon to the other. It only seems
slow, however. Four hundred km above
Earth, Columbia is moving 17,500 mph!

last fall when erich and myself attempted the flight we had decided on public airports.
we never had reservations at hotels because we did not know for sure
if we were going to have delays due to weather etc .... i have been told that
there are a lot af blm airports available.... i will try to get a list..
i understand that the blm wants the airports to be used so that the tree huggers
dont get them closed.

Funny... Checked the dictionary and there's no mention of $HIT anywhere.
Don't think it exists.
...brings to mind the history of a similarly spelled word related to
manure that coincidentally also isn't profane...
Certain types of manure used to be transported (as everything was years
ago) by ship. In dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once
water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of
fermentation began again, of which a byproduct is methane gas.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could
(and
did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time
someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!
Several ships were destroyed in this manner before the cause was
identified. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with
the term "S.H.I.T" on them which meant to the sailors to "Ship High In
Transit." In other words, high enough off the lower decks so that any
water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and
start the production of methane.

Y'all;
If anyone is interested in Lee's Emergency Chute Deployment System and has
the plans, I will look them over and give you an honest opinion of what I
feel about it.
I have a few days of working with parachutes and allied equipment. From
dropping ducks, chickens and up to 35,000 lbs vehicles. Been playing with
them items almost 50 years. Even prevented Bro John from frying his bacon a
couple of times in his early years of ultralighting.

were stenciled Cargo Requires Alternate Positioning --C.R.A.P., further
bastardization it became just plain crap.
And: there is a tree, native to the South, called the shittah tree, of
which comes shittim wood. Better than a brick?

Did you see the latest Experimenter, yet?
On Page 6 there's a short blurb about the CPS Rotax 912-914 engine oil
remote thermostat. It looks like a better solution than blocking off part
of the oil radiator.
What are you thoughts on it?

Hi Robert/Gang:

Yep.

Good idea and good price, it it has been
throroughly tested and has proven to be a reliable
product. Other than what I saw in the
Experimenter, that is all I know about it. Based
on what CPS and some of the other UL parts houses
sell to the unsuspecting public, I will wait a
while before I spend my $75.00. Would also like
to know what the plumbing is going to look like
once the thermostat is installed and operational.
Big Lar helped me find an oil thermostat once for
dune buggies. IIRC it was like 300 or 400
dollars. Now is CPS can make a buck on something,
it is more like doubling or tripling the normal
price of a product. If that is true, the
thermostat would probably cost them about $15 or
20.
The picture of the thermostat looked like it was
made of pot metal, same same our own Mikuni pulse
pumps and Bing carbs.
Will have to wait and see how it works out. Have
not heard anything from Rotax. Would be great if
it works. However, a couple wraps of gaffers tape
on the radiator in the winter usually last me
until warmup. Then off comes the tape until the
weather gets cold again.
Take care,
john h
