I forgot to transfer the "favorites" file into the new one. Got most of the
stuff re-found, and entered, but there's 2 (at least) that I missed, and
hope you guys can help. 1st was the one that had all the airports, as well
as all the little private airstrips listed, along with their owners, phones,
etc.; and the other was the one that let you check weather by entering the
airport identifier. Seems like I should know that one, but I guess I'm
having a senior moment, or a brain fart, or something. Totally blank.
Also, between buying the J-5; finishing Vamoose; insuring (groan) both of
them; going (soon) to get the J-5, (watching for a weather window now) etc.,
etc., it just don't look like the ol' Lar is gonna make it to SnF. Sorry
'bout that.............I had a ball last year, was really looking forward to
this year, and told a lot of you I'd meet you there,
but........................ !

It was approx. 2:00 pm when I learned of the Space Shuttle Columbia's
accident. I still feel like I've been hit between the eyes with a hammer. My
thoughts and prayers will be with their families. It truly is a tragic and
very sad day.

Thanks, Richard. Once again, it's not the one I had, but Intellicast does
the job just fine. Today, I'll phone my boss, and broach the subject of a
few days off next week...................and duck the screaming. From what
I see on that map, and the forecast, next Tuesday on should work for a trip
to get the J-5. Thanks again. Lar. Do not

I've been lurking for quite a while now and appreciate
the wealth of knowledge and humor that is on this
list. I've been flying ultralights for almost 20 yrs
now, starting with an EZ Riser and gradually moving up
to my current project, a FirestarII nearing the paint
stage. I'm wondering if anyone has a used 503 DCDI or
SCDI with B box and motor mounts for sale. I thought
I would check the list first before ordering a new one
from Kolb. contact me off list at abum@avci.net. This
is my 1st post so bare with me. Thanks and safe
flying.

Kolbers,
I was out at the airport (Propwash, 16XS, north of Fort Worth) this
morning for the first flight in about two weeks. An unusually calm,
warm morning for February 1st, I was looking forward to what should be a
great flight. I rolled "My Mistress" out, closed the hangar doors,
crawled in the cockpit and just latched the windscreen when I heard what
sounded like a sudden rattling of the big hangar doors. Perfectly
calm morning- the sound was so unusual that I crawled back out and
checked the doors. I remember looking at the clock as I swung my legs
out- 7:56.
Guess I should have looked up...

Subject: | Fuselage Tube Alignment |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: tom sabean <sabean@ns.sympatico.ca>
Many thanks to all those who responded to my question about fuselage
tube alignment. I may not have described the situation that clearly in
my initial request, the problem was that the bolt went through the tube
ok but was hanging up on the cage upright tube. It was lined up in the
vertical plane but mis-aligned about 1/8th inch horizontally.
After reading all the responses I thought the idea of filing a small
amount off the upright tubes sounded like the way to go. Rotating the
tube 180 degrees was a non-starter as I had already attached the tail
feathers.
I called Ray at TNK and he agreed that since the bolt was mis-aligned by
about 1/8th inch, filing 1/16th from each side of the upright support
would work. He said most of the stress is in the vertical plane so this
would be acceptable.
Hope this info helps any fellow builders who may run into this problem
in the future.

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "VIC" <vicw@vcn.com>
The pilot of the ultralight that got the nuke guys all worked up near
Buckeye was interviewed on the Phoenix radio and he was talking to Luke
Approach and they apparently knew he was there and why he was there. The
radio didn't say why the Power Plant was left out of the loop.
That said, remember when you are out flying, stay away from power plants,
reservoirs and other sensitive places that can make people nervous.
I fly my Kolb in the Buckeye area and I am well aware of some of the
sensitive areas west of Phoenix, including Palo Verde. I recommend that
when you plan to fly in an area, which you are not familiar with you obtain
a sectional chart and contact the local flight service station for
information about areas that you should avoid. I purchased a terminal area
chart for Phoenix and learned that the airstrip I fly from is right on the
edge of the Mode C area. Because of this, I know I have to watch my
altitude very closely when east of my air strip. When you fly an ultralight
you are not required to talk to Flight Service but this incident points out
the important of knowing what is going on in the area you plan to fly in. I
recommend we all check with Flight Service on a regular basis to find out
what is going on in our flying area because it changes on a regular basis.
I am not passing judgment on Mr. Heaney because I don't have all the details
but we can learn from this situation by making sure everyone is in the loop
when we fly around sensitive areas. I am sure Mr. Heisey would not want to
repeat his encounter with the Maricopa County Sheriff Department (they feed
you green bologna and moldy bread in the jail), the NRC, or the FBI.
And, if Mr. Heisey is in the Buckeye area again, get in touch. Anyone that
flies a Kolb automatically gets 8 points with me.
Please Fly Safely
