Kolbers,
My plan to mount my battery is to use the standard location behind the passenger
seat. I have put a piece of thin rubber under it, and strapped it down with
the same method used on the stock fuel tank set- up. I also cut some thin pieces
of pine to take up the space on the side and end so it can't slide around.
It is mounted exactly how the plans tell you to mount the fuel tanks.
I am happy with the set-up, (nice and light) and secure, but am wondering if the
airworthiness inspector will agree with me.
Did anyone else use this method and get through their inspection? Also open to
other methods of strapping it down.
Thanks

Hello all,
I just joined the list because I am looking at buying a beautiful Firestar
II from a guy here on the list. He keeps it at the airport I have recently
been flying an Airborne Edge X trike out of. I decided I would like to add
an axis to my control resume, and I have not seen an ultralight built with
the strength, love, and fit/finish that this one is (AB, if you read this, I
really feel you should be proud of your airplane).
Anyway, since its a Firestar II set up for single place flying, and I have
no taildragger experience (most of my GA training has been in a Cherokee 140
and Cessna 172), I need some training in both 3 Axis ultralight (which I can
get no problem) and would love some in a Kolb. I am living in Charlotte NC
right now, but can travel to anywhere within reason to get some training. I
would really like to find someone in the Carolinas that has a two seater
kolb.
With that said, I hope to be a contributing member of this "My Kolb makes me
smile" list you have here.... thanks.

I believe I saw him and another Firestar pilot with ski's on flying over
Lake Waconia last Saturday during the antique snowmobile show. Its a good
thing they did not land. There were a lot of old Ski-doo's there without
motors, someone might have grabbed the Rotax's off of the planes, put them
on their snow machines and drove off into the sunset!

Mike, John, and gang,
Ralph Burlingame is very much alive and flying on a regular basis. Last
weekend MUA (Minnesota Ultralight Association) had it's annual winter
fly-in. If you can imagine chile and hot chocolate out on a frozen lake.
For you southern guys, this means setting up lawn chairs, tables, grill,
and driving our cars on top of 20+" of frozen lake. The winds were light
and the temps were in the upper 30's. Not bad for Minnesota.
We had a great time waving at folks as we flew by at 3' AIL (above ice
level). I simply love skimming the lake for miles on end, it's a rush.
The 'ol Firestar is flying so well, that our club president, a former
Firestar owner, asked if he could fly it as his Titan Tornado was left at
home. He had a grand time and came back with a big smile on his face.
It's not often I get to see my own plane flying overhead.
Yes guys, I monitor the list and am spending time with a new girlfriend I
found in the personals. That probably explains a lot right there.
(please don't tell her, but the Firestar is still #1 in my eyes :)

Kolb Listers,
After a having put aviation on the back burner for almost a year, our 912 powered
Mark III finally flew this past Sunday (2-2-2003), at the Flying Ten Airport,
Archer, FL. Everyting went great. No adjustments required.
I am not current so, Larry Flewelling (Kolb Owner) was the test pilot and did a
super job. I am not sure who had the biggest smile, Larry or me.
I cannot wait to get current so that I too can enjoy the fruits of my labor.
I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude to all
the Kolb Listers who so generously share their experience and knowledge. Your
input was invaluable to this first time builder.

Dale, FS manual says to use the REINFORCING tape to just beyond the
rivet line.....that's the tape that the rivet goes through.....adhesive
backing, about 3/8" wide.
Then, according to Dondi Miller, the rule for finish tapes is...."hard
under soft...tape it."
I ran my pinked finish tapes from the rear spar to the front spar,
completely covering the rib underneath. I ended the tape by radiusing
the ends with scissors (cut ends not pinked) with the ends stopping just
as they contact the respective front and rear spars. Used a square and
penciled a small mark on each rib so the ends would be even when
sighting down the length of the wing. Looks sorta professional-like....
Dondi sez to finish-tape all fabric that has a "hard" member
contacting the fabric from underneath. Mechanical strength and
protection from wear.
Where the top fabric on the wings overlapped the bottom, my top
fabric overlap ended just beyond the front spar on the bottom. I ran
finish tapes the length of the wing to cover this joint, although it
didn't fall over the "hard" front spar.....overkill maybe, but I didn't
think I could pink the fabric in a straight line for the full length of
the wing for one thing, and wanted a little more than the required 2"
fabric- to-fabric overlap at the leading edge. Sure did improve my
ironing abilities, according to the wife.
Anyone else.....??

Right, but I felt the transition to the Kolb tail dragger experience was a kind
of nonevent. The Kolb is rather benign as tail draggers go. With no tail
dragger experience, I had no trouble with the transition. Joe is such a great
instructor, the fact the he didn't have a tail dragger was of very small
concern. Vann

Denny et al,
I have mounted my battery in an aluminum box at the front of the cage. It is supported
by attachment to the cross tube/nosecone brace and stabilized by attachment
to the tube that supports the rudder springs. The battery is secured by
a heavy strap with a plastic buckle.
Because I weigh only 155 Lbs I had to put the battery up forward to get within
the allowable weight and balance limits with the 912 engine. This sounded like
a neat fix but it turned out to be a bear because my nosecone was already in
place and I spent a lot of my time with my nose against the instrument panel reaching
the attachment area. My wrists were sore for two days because of the contortions
required to get the job done. I strongly recommend that if at all possible
this work be done before installing the nosecone. I will be glad to share
what my experience with anyone interested in the design/installation of the
battery box.
I will include the as-built drawings and document the design requirements (i.e.
strap tension test results and forces exerted by battery during G-loading) in
my construction log. This will be my best shot and if I get a grumpy airworthyness
inspector maybe he will find something else that will be easier to rework
:)

Bob, and Kolb Friends -
I believe the $6500 price tag is old data. I bought my Verner-1400 two
years ago and paid $7500.
With regrets, I'm not able to share very much info with you regarding the
Verner engine on my Mark-3. My total experience is one flight so far on my
aircraft. For those that may recall, I botched my very first landing last
Sep and bent both gear legs. I've since replaced them with new ones and the
aircraft is ready to fly again anytime. But I haven't flown it, as I'm
waiting until I get some dual instruction in another Mark-3 before I venture
aloft again. (I'm planning on traveling up to TNK next month and fly with
Brian Milburn in their new Mark-3 Classic. Need to learn how to land this
plane without bending things!)
Only two folks on this List fly Kolbs with a Verner engine; myself and Bill
George. Bill has flown nearly 30 hours in his Verner-powered Mark-3, and he
reports the performance as being very close to a 582. From my limited
experience with the engine, I like it and am happy with my choice. Runs
smooth and seems to provide plenty of power for my Mark-3. Plus, factory
support from the US distributor (Central Florida Flyers) has been excellent.
In reality, it's a 70hp engine. Specs say 80, but that's only at the max
RPM of 5000, which is limited to 5 minutes. Max continuous RPM is 4000,
which yields 70hp.
There was lots of talk on this List about the Verner engine last fall. John
Hauck wrote up a thoughtful comparison between the Verner and the R-912.
Check the archives for details. I'm encouraged that more Kolb folks are
showing interest in the Verner, as that will increase our List's experience
base with this powerplant. As soon as I begin flying again, I'll certainly
post some performance figures to share with you all.

I believe I posted a fairly complete evaluation of the Verner to this list
some time back. It should be in the archives. Mine is an SVS 1400.
Flew it yesterday, Feb 5, for the first time since December 14. Wasn't sure
if the battery would be up to it (BIG cylinders = strong battery
requirement). But, she fired right up with that Harley style rumble and away
we went.
I eased the throttle up quite slowly as I am wont to do when she hasn't
flown for a while and, well before I got to max power, I was surprised to be
in the air.
This engine is well crafted and the pros and cons have been discussed
(sometimes passionately) on this list. Those folks looking to replace their
two strokes with a four stroke powerplant should know they should not expect
a performance increase in most cases. The Rotax 912 100 hp might be an
exception. It's all about power to weight and these engines are considerably
heavier. When you add a "battleship" type mount it exacerbates the issue.
What you do get is a less finicky more reliable motor and,in the case of the
Verner, drastically reduced fuel consumption and smooth operation.
P.S. It's still for sale, but I haven't been trying very hard ;-)

Can you contact the Verner folks (factory) or
dealers here in the States to get a list of people
who have bought one of their engines?
Maybe you can start an informal email list to
share experiences and increase the learning curve
for the Verner.

when figuring the w&b. after adding the moment arms and deviding that by the total
weight. we get a distance in inches from the datum to the cg. in the
instructions it says to take that distance and multiply by 100 then devide
the result by 66 to get the %cg which is to be between 25 and 35. All of that
is easy math but the question i have is..... where do we get the figures
100 and 66? what do they represent? just whishing to expand my knowledge.
what prompted this question is i am considering moving my engine back so i am not
so near the front of the cg range when i have two people on board. that leads
to the next question.... do you know the weight of a rotax 912 complete with
the oil canister full of oil mounted on the magneto end of the engine? i
am planning some what if s with a spreadsheet and the info would be valuable
in coming up with a mathamatical solution before driling holes.

The inspector's job is not to contest your design, it is simply to make sure
you are not a hazard tp people or property on the ground. If he starts
coming off at you, demanding that you change things etc.. get rid of him and
get someone else. You are building an Experimental and within reason you are
the one making the decisions. They are supposed to be intrusive, if they
make suggestions then its only suggestions.

One of the things we were told never to do is use a pencile on aluminum, has
to do with corossion. Use only felt Sharpie type,, or a grease pencil. I
hope you were saying it figuratively.

Yes Altimiser is another VW engine site. They list a engine mount that might
solve the Rotax to VW engine mount problem but there are no pictures and the
description is a bit vague. We need a off the shelf engine mount for
mounting VWs on Kolbs.
I have talked to the owner a few times on the phone and he is big on
promises. Over the course of two years I talked to him three times and each
time he was a few months away from finishing his reduction drive design. It
appears now three years later he is selling the Gene Smith reduction drive.
I will say it again the VW engine is another good option for those that
don't want to spend the big dollars for a Rotax. The engine can be installed
for around $5500.00 with all new parts. With fuel injection add another
$1000.00. You have the option of building it your self for less and it can
be built in just about any HP you want 36-100. I have found that a reduction
drive is mandatory to make this engine perform on a Kolb. Ask me how I know.
Again you will not find any one that will sell you a engine package for a
MKIII but if you willing to buy the parts and bolt it together it appears to
be a suitable, inexpensive and reliable engine package. I have 60 hours on
my redrive VW and 40 hours on the previous direct drive VW.

I believe he was referring to marking fabric with
pencil. This is the recommended method of
marking. Agree not to mark aluminum with pencil.
I use a ball point pen to mark fabric. Problem
for some is it bleeds through. However, I have
not experienced a problem with bleed through
because the Polyspray does a good job of covering
it up.

I use a felt tip pen for marking aluminum, but not
a grease pencil. I like a fine line to mark for
cuts and drilling.

I have a simple rule, no pencils at all anywhere in the hanger. Aceton or
mek will remove the ink easy, as if it were water whenever someone wants to.
Very dangerous stuff that carbon on aluminum. Wood crafters have the hardest
time with this, they are so used to their pencils.
Now thinking about this I don't recall seeing Kolb anywhere in their manuals
cautioning against it. If thats the case they should enter a cuationary note
on all new plans pronto.

Missed that part on my first go,, slow day here at the office.... :-)
If thats the case I hope using the 50/50 rule his pencil was on the outside.
If not I would think that Poly-bond or whatever they call that pink glue
that they provide will give a barrier from the graphite on the fabric to the
metal.

I think the No Pencils on Al was one of the first things I learned as
apprentice sheet-metal hogger. For a very long time I was set to making
replacement skins for mostly Cessnas. Shop was too poor/stingy to buy
sheets from Cessna already cut and pilot-drilled, so old Bob learned how
to make an exact replacement skin, using the old crumpled skin. Now most
40 yrs later, I still make a few--and really enjoy it. No $, but lotsa
satisfaction from hanging a nice straight skin where damage was done.

Hi folks!
Great feedback on the engine exploration! Thanks. Next I would like to know if
the PSRU on the Verner 1400 ( the two belt one) is available from another source
or is that a Verner design? It would work great on my Harley Davidson engine
test stand.
I know that most of you think I'm nut's for doing this but hey I have the engine
and all of the components and are working on a "project" not a alternative to
what's already out there.
The Verner is very impressive and I may go that route when the time comes. The
HKS is also a dandy engine. The only thing about the Verner that I'm not excited
about is that it uses a cam chain.Just not a big fan of chains that's all..
I also have a friend that is retired (sorta) and he has a extensive background
in machine, tool and die. He has a shop full of machines and loves to build engines
(experimental). He really likes radial engines. Well me with my passion for
Harley Davidson engines you can see where this is going. Our first plan is to
mount a PSRU on the 80 ci evo that I have and test run it with a warp drive
prop.
Next we plan to build a crankcase from billet aluminum and use the single pin crank, rods, pistons, cylinders, heads, cam
and valve train (pushrod type) in an opposed
configuration like the Verner/HKS engines. It's not only passion for the
HD but it's simplicity is overwhelming! One compact unit. Dry sump, air cooled,
creates on voltage replacement,CHEAP! Only 300 bucks per cyl base gasket up!
add single carburetor constant velocity (altitude compensating) and the fact it
will run dang near on Jack Daniels whiskey you can see why I want to play with
this idea. Oh almost forgot 50 horsepower per cyl....
If that works out the next step is the radial. 7 cyl dual ignition only using the
top end and pistons from HD.
Folks please don't forget that this is a experiment and I'm not suggesting that
this will be a practical application on a Kolb airplane but who knows? The big
bore, long stroke, high compression engine is not what most "aircraft" engine
makers go for but hey, it is a kick in the pants don't you think? Not to mention
a free country! God bless America!!!!!!!!!

The D/C headsets are good and durable. I have the D/C-60, which I converted
a few years ago to an ANR headset. If you are going to buy a headset you
might as well spend the extra pain and get an ANR. Its worth every penny and
you won't regret it. My top choice for ANR headset is the Telex 4100 or
whatever they replaced it with. They are really very good.

Go for it, and have a ball ! ! ! I started on my VW with redrive almost
6 years ago, and I take great pride in it, tho' others have beaten me into
the air with the combination. I know from their results that my idea was a
winner, and when flying (soon, now) I'll have the tremendous satisfaction of
working a complex & difficult task thru to completion.................it's
just taken a LOT longer than I expected, and a LOT more money for the whole
project. (Tho', as stated elsewhere, the basic VW is a very inexpensive and
rugged unit. Even with (re-designed) re-drive, electronic fuel injection,
and wasted spark electronic ignition, my total engine package cost is only
around $7500.00) Good Luck to You ! ! ! A radial on a Kolb may be a
little awkward, and would take some cutting and welding, but it'd sure sound
sweet...............always remember.................the impossible just
takes a little longer; and with Harley parts ??.................WOW ! ! !

Hafta add to this, based on Captain Ron's very appropriate comments:
I've used my D.C.'s with pleasure & success for, as I say, over 5 yrs now,
and haven't converted to ANR because I haven't felt the need, while flying
Cessnas. When my Kolb is flying, I understand the noise level will be much
higher, and I'll almost certainly go for the ANR conversion.

Hi Gary/Gang:
David Clark makes good stuff. I have a 1987
vintage 10-40, a 1992 vintage 10-40, a much newer
13.4. I like them all. The old 10-40 is heavier,
but seals better and cuts down on noise quite a
bit.
Before I got the DC 13.4 I got a Litespeed 20XL
active noise canceling. Did not work in the fully
enclosed Mark III (mine). Got a lot of feedback
in the form of a ruhm, ruhm, ruhm at cruise power
and higher.
I just bought a Sigtronics S-45. Built like the
DC 10-40, but much lighter. I have flown a couple
hours once with them a couple weekends ago. I
like them ok also. Got them from Tropic Aero for
179.00 plus 8.00 shipping. Have done business
with these folks on several occassions now.
Tropic Aero is in Ft Lauderdale, FL:

I also have a Sigtronics 400SPN intercom that has
been in the airplane since new, 1992. Works well.
My DC 10-40's have seen their useful lives. I
could probably send them back to DC and have them
overhauled. DC does good work and turns stuff
around in a hurry. They are expensive, but ya
pays for whats ya gets.

PS: One of the things I did not like about the
Litespeed 20XLs was the darn battery that had to
be used with the system. Something else to take
care of, plus the container it was in took up more
space and added to the clutter in the cockpit.
Keep it simple.

Don't really need it with a 503-E Box --- but has anyone tried these
ANR inserts in their Comtronics helmets or any other. Don't want
to stop using my helmet. 95% of the crashes in these things won't
kill you - but can hurt you real bad.
