Your putting a septic system in your Kolb? I know a little age required more frequent
stops, but this is a little drastic, no?

Well..............I have an airplane with 5 hours
duration and a pilot with an hour. So........I
had a choice of bringing the capabilities of the
airplane and the pilot more in line with each
other. I could take out the 25 gal fuel tank and
replace with a smaller tank, or do something to
increase the range of the pilot. An on board
septic tank and plumbing system was the route to
take, since I liked having the 5 hour fuel
capability. Only took four days to accomplish.

Take care,

Kolbers,
Looking at the new airfield last evening since the snow finally melted, it looks
like the grass planted late last fall is coming alive again, real fine short
blades.
The winter has exposed thousands of small to medium stones that would love to find
the prop of any pusher aircraft such as our Kolbs. Thought it would be wise
to get as many as possible picked up before the grass thickens up. But how?
Lets see, I have three kids under nine years and so does the neighbor. I told
them all that I was paying $.80 per gallon bucket of stones removed from the field.
In short order they had 40 gallons of stones removed at a cost to me of $6.40,
they can't wait to get home from school today to earn more money. Capitalism
is effective!
I have a few minor details to finish up on the Mk-3 over the next couple weeks,
with 1.6 hrs on the 690 I am pretty much done with the primary break-in and
figure to wait till we get her to the airport to run it more. Everything looks
good with the powerplant so far.
Been thinking of buying a pair of the big tundra tires from Tom Olinik but the
stock ones look so sleek that I figure I'll use them for a while first so I have
something to compare the big boys to.
I made a folded tail fixture from 1/2" cpvc pipe , 4 tees, four elbows and some
pipe insulation the other day, man does that ever make it nice to move around
in the garage.
Still having difficulty with the FAA aircraft registration office, sent the last
volley of paperwork to them a week ago Monday, hope to hear good news in the
next couple of weeks. Its all I can do to be nice to them, had to write this
last letter four times before I got it toned down to a civil level. Figured I
don't need to make enemies with the folks who hand out airworthiness certificates.

Joe/Gang:
I do not know what the published flap extension
speed is for Sling Shot.
I usually used 70 to 75 mph as max. Structurally,
I do not think there is a problem. Aerodynamicly,
I have not had any control problems with those max
speeds. They do help you slow down quickly, and
drop the nose cosiderably when you need to see
where you are going. The lack of normal Kolb
incidence in the wings contributes to the tail
dropping excessively when airspeed is slowed
down. Pulling on full flapperons will turn the
nose down into somewhat level flight.

Lar,
First off my post should have read (per 5 gallon bucket, not gallon bucket).
My troubles with registration stem mostly from the fact that I was not the
original purchaser of the kit and did not have the original Bill of sale,
nor a proper bill of sale from the original kit owner, his hand written bill
of sale stated Mk-3 airplane, instead of Mk-3 kit. Things were also
complicated by my having a co-owner in my plane and not having all the dots
connected on paper until we applied for registration.
If you have a copy of "how to licence a homebuilt aircraft" and are the
original kit purchaser, you should rip through the process slicker than
snot.

40 gallon pails at $.80 pail comes out to $32.00 by my math, not $6.40.
These poor kids need an attorney, wasn't there a lawyer on the list?

Thanks John.
I've also used them when trying to cruise with slower ULs I fly with. Seems
a notch or two of flaps keeps me from dragging my tail around when flying at
speeds around 65 or so.
Thanks again,
Joe

I usually used 70 to 75 mph as max. Structurally,

even at that rate, remember, I am a certified cheapskate.

Should I let the shaft extend thru the face of the hub into the prop or stop
it at the face of the hub? Or does it matter at all?

I once did a similar experiment using a 74 Harley and a 84" prop a long
time ago, 1963 as I recall.
Can't tell you how much thrust but I can tell you it will be a giant
vacuum cleaner sucking up any debris, loose stones and dirt into the
prop. Be careful.

Bob, I am emptying the buckets for the kids, but they are dragging them
around pretty well until they are near full, and the little guy Josh and his
neighbor buddy are using a wagon to carry theirs around. If you think I am
doing good, you would not beleive the work my dad used to get out of my
siblings and I. I would be in jail for doing the same today, and thats a
fact. :-(

Denny/Gang:
You got that right. Pick a switch out of the
hedge and put it on a kids legs, the EPA, FBI,
CIA, SPCA, Civil Liberty Union and the rest of the
liberals will be after you for child abuse. My
Mom taught me all I need to know about the switch
bush. :-(

Well I took the the tractor out on the weedway today and smushed my rocks
into the fresh mud with the roller. Didn't hurt a bit either. Actually I
rather enjoyed it. Gave the dog a good workout chasing the tractor up and
down the runway also. One of these days the Kolb will be running up and
down it. Speaking of liberal abuse chasers, you forgot to mention divorce
lawyers John. I'll get a switching for that one......;o)

Linda and I mounted the wings this evening, she wanted em off her porch. :-)
This was the first time they have been installed since covering.
No problems, but man you have to be careful you don't bind things up at the universal
joints. Almost pinched the fingers there also.
It looks good with the feathers spread.
We went ahead and folded it to put it in the garage, but that totally made up my
mind about removing the wings to trailer. They are definitely coming off and
going on some sort of rack. That thing is a ton to move around folded and there
is a hundred ways to ding things up while you do it, I managed to do a couple
of them. Also was as hard as I expected to install the second retainer pin
in the wing fold holder thingy, I am using the wavy quick pins like you use
on tractors and had to stick my head under the wing to see what I was doing.

Gene,
That's very interesting! 74' hmmm.. that would have been a shovel right? How
did it work out? What redrive did you use? Did the shovels have a
compensating sprocket on the crankshaft? Did you go direct? Would love to
know!!
thanks
