Lookin' good, Paul, but on page 6, side view - is it my eyes, or is the top
sprocket a little closer to the engine, and out of line with the bottom one
?? If it is, you'll get a high rate of wear, less efficiency, and probably
more noise. How are you lubricating that chain ?? Before you start on the
direct drive, are you going to find a prop that will let you load the
engine/redrive to capacity ?? I think (know ! ! ! ) you'll find a huge
difference in thrust between that and direct drive, if you do. For the
toothed belts that you asked about earlier, I think Goodyear, Firestone and
Gates all make them. Hot rodders have been using them for years to drive
superchargers, etc., so speed catalogs & hot rod magazines may be a place to
look for the belts and sprockets. Thinking of that, doesn't, or didn't,
Harley use a belt drive on some models ?? Might be a good source. It'd be
much simpler to build a drive with one of those, than with the Hy-Vo chain
on Vamoose' redrive, 'cause you wouldn't need the oil supply and return.
Seems to me that some of the 1st attempts to use those belts wound up
shearing the teeth off fairly quickly. Can't for sure remember the cure,
but think an idler was at least part of it. Anyone ??

When I bought my Firefly, it came with a fueling system the previous owner
had put together. He used a 12v battery and fuel pump from (he said) a
rider lawn mower. It seems to pump 0.8 gpm, so 5 gallons takes about 5
minutes (it's never completely empty)

Larry , I've been involved with those pumps for years , transffering
FUEL to heavy
equipment . Unless they have changed the design , they are NOT recomended
for gasoline.
The motors are not explosion proof . ( fumes ) I'm sure you can also smoke
while fueling
and get away with it most of the time .
My two cents

With my gravity powered siphon tube & step-ladder it takes about 5
minutes to fill BOTH of my 5 gallon tanks.

Having run the fueling ops for a heavy Mech battalion we always ground our
fuel vehicles with a wire going to a grounding copper rod,(to dissipate any
charge the vehicle or receiver might have) We even do this for diesel, yea
never know, run your wire to a good ground on your dolly (what ever)frame
make sure your motor is connected to the ground and touch the ground before
starting the pumps to transfer your charge to the ground ( remember in the
winter you can built up a hell of a charge). Also remember the prop itself
can built up a charge, you should see the size of the ground rod we used
when helo's brought fuel pods in and at night with NVG's on you can see the
static charge snapping out on the rotor tips.

Hey Cy, Jerb, others.
Sorry to disagree, but there is nothing wrong with using compressed air for
refueling our Kolbs. A lot safer than making electrical connections, unless
they are made far from the plane.
The important part is to leave your container on the ground and ground your
funnel.
You only need 10 psi of air and do not make the air connection tight to the
container, provide some leakage so you don't blow up the container.
I use a air needle you use to blow up footballs and a hole in the cap to
stick it in.
I use a 3/8 hose to the Smart Tech Fuel filter Funnel, just go slow.
Have been doing this for 100 hours..... no problem.
The easiest, cheapest way to refuel.

Hey Folks!
Great news. I found a website and down loaded the complete parts illustrations
for the 1400 with the belt redrive. I am very excited with this because I will
be able to adapt this right to the HD project. All I have do is machine a tapered
adapter for the drive sprocket. Everything just bolts together. I have requested
prices for all the parts needed. Going to be interesting how much all
that cost. Also I notice that the driven sprocket has a vibration dampener in
the form of a big rubber plate that fits between the prop hub and the driven sprocket.
Wonder if it's enough to handle the HD? Reckon we shall find out!
