--> Kolb-List message posted by: Jack & Louise Hart <jbhart@ldd.net> Don, If one goes back to AC 103-7 Appendix 1, Maximum Level Flight Air Speed Calculations, you can see why this FireFly is so much faster. If one puts in the drag numbers for the wheel pants and the full windshield, the overall drag factor drops from 12.14 to 9.86. Going to the speed, drag factor and HP chart and picking off the speed at the intersection of the drag factor and HP, it comes out to about 72.5 mph. I had not trouble getting my FireFly up to 74 mph, with out these improvements. And so 80+ mph true is not unreasonable with the wheel pants and full windshield. One must be careful at these speeds due to the possibility of control flutter and the FireFly has a never exceed speed of 80 mph. Jack B. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Chris Ross" <coross2@mindspring.com> All-- I've been lurking here for awhile. I'm thinking about building a Kolbra and am curious about a couple of issues. 1. Will it qualify under the 51% rule if built from a quick build kit? 2. What about flight instruction? Is there any consensus on the desirability of GA time vs. going straight to the Light Sport Aircraft license? I realize the final Light Sport Aircraft regs are not in place, but I'm curious anyway. Thanks. Chris Ross Chicago

Subject: Change is in the wind for Rotax
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Peter Volum" <peterv@etsmiami.com> After the recent thread about engines, this article from the EAA's newsletter caught my eye. Let's just hope that the changes end up being good for us consumers. PV Do not archive BOMBARDIER SELLING RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS DIVISION, INCLUDING ROTAX Rotax Not Discontinuing 447 Engine Bombardier Inc. announced on April 3 that it will sell its Recreational Products division, which includes Rotax Aircraft Engines, SkiDoo snowmobiles, and SeaDoo watercraft. The division is being sold to help recapitalize the ailing, publicly held conglomerate. Bombardier expects the division to be attractive to investors because of its profitability, the quality of its assets, and its international reputation as a leader in most of its markets. Bombardier Inc. stated in its release that members of the Bombardier family, who originally owned the corporation before it went public, have expressed an interest in "being part of an eventual group of investors seeking to acquire this heritage asset," adding that the division is well positioned to compete on its own and to become even more successful. Well-known Rotax consultant Eric Tucker, who previously worked within the Bombardier Recreational Products division, said this is definitely good news. "The Recreational Products division is one of the few Bombardier divisions actually making money, so Bombardier feels it can raise some capital to reduce its red ink in other areas," he said. Tucker adds that the Bombardier family is interested in buying the division, which he also sees as good news. "I believe the whole division will be better off being out from under Bombardier in the long run." As a side note, Tucker said the Rotax is NOT discontinuing the two-cycle, two-cylinder 447 engine. "There have been some rumors floating around the Sun 'n Fun Fly-in that the 447 line is coming to an end, and that is not true. The 447 engine will continue to be available for the foreseeable future."

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Williamson" <kolbrapilot@attbi.com> I did my Kolbra from a Quick Build kit and only had to show my DAR that I had completed the majority of the airplane. The New Kolb Aircraft Company has not had the Kolbra evaluated by the FAA so it could be included on their 51% list. With good building documentation it is not hard to prove that you build the majority of it. Remember that spot pilot has some limitations: 39 knot stall speed (44.88 mph) probably being the most critical. My stall speed at 1100 lb. gross weight is 44 knots (51 mph). So as built, I can't operate it under the proposed sport pilot rules. As for GA instruction, it sure can't hurt. My son got his Private Certificate and had no problems on his Kolbra check-out. --> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <rwpike@charter.net> Lar - and other Kolbers- here is a link to an excellent spam filter you can use to filter out all the junk mail, Spamnix. But it only works with the Eudora e-mail program. (Which you can download from this site, there is a link) You can download Eudora Lite for free and try it out, and download Spamnix for free (gives you a nag screen periodically) and if you like it, send them some money and they upgrade it a bit and the nag screen goes away. I am using it with Eudora Pro and very satisfied, it is almost a no brainer to configure. Try it for free, if you don't like it, go back to MS Outlook Express or whatever. Lar - contact me off list and I'll tell you how to change your web site so the spammer seek-bots don't auto-sniff out your e-mail address. http://www.spamnix.com/download.html Richard Pike MKIII N420P (420ldPoops) Do Not Archive >almost 1/3 of my email is spam now.
