The only problem is that it takes a good tow vehicle, not because of weight, but because of the amount of air. Weather sucks here in the DFW area today, so I thought I would send a couple of photos I took this morning at Arlington Municipal airport. The EAA Flying Fortress (B-17) flew in last evening while I was flying around the pattern but I didn't have the camera with me then. http://home.attbi.com/~kolbrapilot/100_0635.JPG http://home.attbi.com/~kolbrapilot/100_0636.JPG Weather should be good for the Fly-In at Bowie, TX on Saturday. Hey -- what kind of plane is the midwing N5XK ? Looks pretty cool -- probably lots of vis, nice taildragger config to take up some sloppy ground, and the miner's emblem on the tail. -Ben Ransom do not archive --- John Hauck wrote: > --> Kolb-List message posted by: John Hauck > > Kolbers: > > These are pics taken by Jim Hefner. I had a 5 gallon plastic gas tank that fit in that area on my last Ultrastar that did not make any difference to propellar air or airspeed. I plan on using this area again on the new Ultrastar which will give me the option on trips of 11 gallons but still removable . Look in the photo share and you can see the plastic tank position on my old Ultrastar.. > > Don. > Go with the 6 inch rims , tires and tubes. I only know about the aluminum and not the plastic. I did have considerable trouble with the Azusa wheels because of assembly problems concerning wobble. The only solution was to assenble everything on the axle and torque very carefully...never got it perfect but acceptable. Tracy Obrien brakes recquired a lot of screwing around to make acceptable......Although I do like the result . Bailes is about 20 miles south of Houston, and a very active ultralight airport (7R9), and EAA Chapter (347). You should run into John Wall in his blue and white Challenger II, John Riley in his red and white RANS S-12XL, and Russell Hakanson in his newly repaired SkyBoy, draped in a patriotic red, white and blue. Both were designed and constructed by Fred Keller of Anchorage, Alaska. N4XK was his second Oshkosh winner. He was the first person to win twice with different airplanes. He also build a KR-1, a Vari-Eze (the other Champion), and was partner with Burt Rutan on the twin engine Defiant project for which he built the plans prototype. The gold pan, pick and shovel emblem is his personal logo. The Prospector is intended as a modern SuperCub. Same engine: O-320 but with visibility of a canopy. Midwing because you can't land a low wing in the bush without tearing it up quickly. It can carry 1000 lbs plus full fuel which is why I was able to bring beer, soda, ice, ice chest and firewood to Monument Valley (not to mention Betty's luggage for a 3 day weekend). You can sleep in the back or carry 12 foot boards. My copy has high compression cylinders for 160 Hp, an MT constant speed prop and side stick controllers a la Defiant (or F-16). Optimum normal cruise is 150 mph at 7 gph but it will go 160 if pushed. Just as important, it can fly slower than a SuperCub. My max performance takeoff with full flaps is 30 kts IAS. Normal is 40 kts IAS. The main problem with the Prospector is it is designed for great big tundra tires at low air pressure. With 8.50s and its stiff gear you can't do a full stall landing and tend to bounce if you try. Everyone at Monument Valley can testify about my bouncing. For even more information check the October, 1989 issue of Sport Aviation. Tom
