I never weighed the complete VW engine package but when I add up the weights
that Great Plains Aircraft publishes (I consider them to much more
reputable) I figured it once to be app 10lbs more than a Rotax 912. My fuel
burn appears to be between 3.5 and 5 gallons per hour depending on the power
usage. I need to start doing some cross county flying to get a good fuel
usage figure but it will be in the 3.5-4 GPH range at a low power 3200RPM
75MPH cruise.
Currently my MKIII likes to fly in the 75-79MPH range. I have a number of
streamlining plans, the first of which will be pulling in the doors like the
Richard Pike has done but I wanted to keep the airframe the same till I
finished all the engine work.
My current air speeds are:
RPM MPH(GPS)
3000 70
3200 75
3300 78-79
3700 93 Full Throttle
3400 55 Full Throttle Climb
3500 60 Full Throttle Climb
As you can see at 3200RPM cruise the engine is loafing and will hopefully
live a long and happy life. The reduction drive engine has had a problem
with low CHT and oil temps that I'm still working on eg. oil temp of no more
than 180 degrees and CHT of 300 degrees but these are easy problems. The CHT
on the ground has to be watched as it will climb if I sit on the ground
running too long (10 minutes maximum) with no air blowing thru the cooling
scoops.

Rick,
If your had to hang your VW engine from a hook with everything but the
prop, what would it weigh?
Also what kind of fuel consumption are you seeing?
I like the VW but they seem heavy.

Well, fellow Kolbers, the trip around Michigan's Thumb was a big success and a
big hit with the local populace. If you'd like to see a few pictures I took, here's
a link:
http://www.hiperlightaircraft.com/thumb_tour_03/
There were 13 planes, 4 of which were Kolbs!
Mark II - Ken Fackler (hey, that's me!)
Mark II - Ken Beaupre
Firefly - Dominic Tringali
Firestar - Mark Grey
The first three are all based at my home field.

Hi Ken, and fellow Kolb Flyers,
Nice photos of your group of Kolb's and others.
One question. What is "Michigan's Thumb"?

I know, I know.....
Lower Michigan has the shape of a mitt, the fingers are one part, the thumb
is the other part and the upper peninsula is called the UP.
Something I learned when I lived in Michigan.

Do also you know what people who LIVE in the UP are called by those who
don't?
And what people who live in the UP call those of us who don't?

Plant corn, beans, sugar beets, oats, wheat, potatoes, carrots, blueberries,
and myriad of other crops in it. Some of the finest maple syrup in the world
comes from it's Sugar Maples. Raise a lot of waterfowl in it's swamps and
marshes. A few 200+ lb. whitetail bucks roam it's forests and fields.
Sticks right into some of the best Walleye fishing on the planet. Not a bad
place to live at all..........Kirk

Are these flights open to other Kolb flyers in the area? If they are and you
give us some notice there are a few MKIIIs in the Lansing MI area that might
join in. Also there is a 1400' strip next to my house that will welcome any
light plane.
Also still looking to put together or join a flight to Oshkosh this year.

Just a little report on the Flyin at Bowie Texas, June 6,7,&,8. There was
a total of 4 Kolbs. I believe 3 were from Oklahoma. I got my chance to meet
John Williamson and to see his great looking Kolbra that I have been hearing
so much about. What a nice guy. He was nice enough to give me a ride & let me
fly from the back seat. It was my first flight in a Kolb. Im sure I made the
right decision to build a Kolb now. If my Firefly flys at all like his Kolbra I
will be very pleased. Got my engine on Friday. I have my enclosed trailer,
almost finnished. After the flight in Johns Kolbra Im fired up to finish my
Firefly. Maybe I wiIl join the ranks of the flying before too long.
Thanks for the flight John,
Ed Diebel
