Every year they went to the county fair and Grampa would say" Ma, I'd sure like
to go for a ride in that airplane." Ma would say " But it's 50 bucks and 50 bucks
is 50 bucks." So another year would go by and another arguement but no flight
for Pa. The pilot would park his plane and watch them argue year after year.
Finally when Pa was 85 he said to Ma. " Ma, I'm 85 and might not live another
year and never get a chance to go for that plane ride." Of course Ma came
back with the same answer," 50 bucks is 50 bucks" . The pilot sat listening to
them argue and finally said." I'll give both of you a ride if you can be quiet
the entire ride. If you say a word , it's 50 bucks. They agreed. He took them
up and did loops, spins, snap rolls, tail slides, the works. Not a word from
either. After landing he said to to Pa," That was a amazing, I would have never
believed it. Not a single word from either of you." Pa said, " I was gonna
say something when Ma fell out, but 50 bucks is 50 bucks.

. Sometimes, if you get the right
controller, he will go to the extra effort of
ID'ing you on radar by flying different headings
and altitudes, then vectoring you into Class C
airspace. I do not mess with Class B airspace.

for me the class b is easy.... you do have to call an hour befor you go through..
but my trip through the class b on the way to and from monument valley was
extreemely gratifying, the controlers were sooo helpfull and willing to take
care of me, that i called up and told the supervisor just how pleased i was
with my treatment.... then sent a quick note for him to post so all the controllers
could see. they hand walked my trhough the area, and from what i could
hear on the radio it was esaiser for me than some with the proper mode c transponders.

My MKIII likes to fly at 75MPH but I find that the airplane is unstable in
pitch. I isn't difficult to fly but requires constant attention. I find that
the airplane will not hold a pitch angle even trimmed.

i am not sure what is going on with youre plane... but mine is set up as per the
plans... it seems that the uneasyness in rough air is due to the light wing
loading... what would be light turbulance in a cesna will be aproaching moderate
in the kolb.. when things get real rough i slow down a bit and it seems
to handel it better. as for what altitude i fly, i dont have a set answer...
usually fly according to the conditions i find myself in / over.

      Erich, and All -

I just finished installing a BRS Softpack in my Mark-3.
Fits fine behind the passenger seat - a tight, cozy fit.
BRS does not have drawings or plans for this installation, so I developed my
own. All they offered for the Mark-3 was top-mounted installations.
In my installation, the rocket fires out the side and 45 degrees downward,
right thru the fabric. BRS even told me that, if I send pictures and
drawings of my installation and they think it's adequate, BRS would create
"official" drawings and offer them as one of the installation options for
the Kolb Mark-3. We'll see what happens ...

      Dennis/All:

Sure they did. How much discount are they going
to allow you if you go to the trouble, time, and
expense of documenting your installation for BRS
to use? Probably the same amount they offered me
when I purchased my soft pack three years ago.
      :-)

The main advantage of mounting inside out of the
weather is an extention of repack time from 2
years to 6 years. Was worth the time and effort
to come up with a suitable/reliable system of my
own to mount my parachute out of the elements and
inside the center section where it stays dry and
      out of the sun.

      jerb/All:

The Cuyuna on the Ultastar powered the Dan White
Illusion Aircraft Strobes directly from alternator
using AC unregulated current. I also used the
small epoxy potted Tympanium reg/rec to power
whatever I had that required 12DC regulated power.

The 447 on the Firestar used the same strobes
powered by unregulated AC, and a large finned
aluminum Tympanium reg/rec for KX99, electric fuel
      pump, etc.

The 582 used all 12DC regulated through the large
Tympanium reg/rec. I have Whelen strobes and nav
      lights on the MK III.

All the 2 strokes have a 155 watt alternator, the
      4 strokes have a 250 watt alternator.

Would be nice to have more electrical power.
Strobes, nav lights, panel lights on at the same
time will pull most of my power, leaving the
battery going hungry. In those cases, which do
not happen very often because I do not fly much at
night any more, I run the nav lights and shut down
the strobes. If traffic gets busy I'll turn the
strobes back on when operating in or near
airports. I am legal at night with only nav
      lights though.

I just finished installing a BRS Softpack, and I needed to do a new weight &=0D

Congratulations Dennis. Good work. It looks like your numbers are close to
mine. I am getting about 65mph TAS at 3800 at 5500-6000' msl.

I just removed the oil cooler and the next time the winds drop below 30
knots I will see if that helps the oil temperatures. Next flight perhaps you
can post the CHTs and oil temps.

      Again, congratulations!

      Ben/All:

I do not know what the requirements are for other
parachutes than my own, which is a 1050 soft
pack. Two years normal, but extended to 6 years
if stored and secured out of the weather.

Check out BRS web site. They have all the specs
      there.

      recent flight out West:

      http://home.sw.rr.com/jhauck/Monument%20Valley%202003/jhauck/

Have not had time to come up description of each
pic, but will real soon. Will write them up and
post on a word pad file with pic number to act as
      guide.

The file for each pic starts out with a two digit
number from 01 to 83. This is an interim list of
pics. I plan to go back through the originals and
edit where needed. If you want a better copy to
reporduce, let me know and I will send you one of
the originals which are about 350 or a little more
      kb.

      Folks,

I am nearing the FAA airworthiness inspection and I am confused about the issue
of the forward and rearward CG extremes.

First, am I required to show the inspector the calculations for the most forward
      and rearward CG extremes?

The plans from Kolb have told me what the CG limits are and I can assume there
are many loading scenarios that will calculate to these limits. So if the FAA
requires these numbers, how do I calculate them? Do I use my present weight
and then do several calculations using various loading scenarios for fuel and
      passenger?

I am not asking how to calculate the CG, but rather how to formulate the equation
to give me the forward and rearward extreme CG.

This seems a waste of time, as over time, it is likely my weight will change.

      Thanks for your help.

I'm just doing the last minute planning for my next trip that starts this
      Saturday morning.
Plan to spend Saturday night in Mt. Vernon, IL,
      Sunday night at Olcott-Newfane, NY,
      Monday night at Eastport, ME,
Tuesday night at Sky Manor, NJ,
Wednesday night at Ashe County, NC,
Visit TNK on Thursday and spend the night at Shelbyville, TN,
      Get back home on Friday.

It's an ambitious plan but I doubt if I can do it without a day or two of
      weather delays.

      Hi John:

Good luck on your upcoming flight. I will put a
good word in for you to the Weather Gods. Might
even do an Anti-Rain Dance, or something like
      that.

Be sure and stop in at Sanford, Maine, airport. 9
years ago they had a cafe in the FBO. Good food,
      IIRC.

Got some new urls for my picture index page to

I like Lone Pine, CA. Neat little airport with

Also a great place for rockhounding, and general crawling around the hills
exploring, and stuff. Lar. Do not Archive.
