For those of you that have landed at my little strip here and saw the circle track next to it, you know that's the running track for my blind Vietnam Vet neighbor. We built that so he would have a place to train as he loves to run. Yesterday he ran in the annual Bobby Crim road race held in Flint, MI. This race is a world class race that attracts runners from around the world for prize money. The men from Kenya have dominated for several years now and this years women's winner came from Russia. There were 285 men that ran in the 55-59 year old age bracket and I'm so damn proud of my neighbor Howard as he finished 11th in that group 12 seconds off the best time for his age group. The only blind runner in the group. ......Kirk Do not archive

Then last night it hit me! The whole problem thus far has been trying to work around the starter flex plate and retain the HD compensating sprocket for torsional dampening. So I plan to move the starter up on the propshaft end of the drive like it is on the motorcycle. this will allow me to use the HD double roller chain in oil with the HD slack adjuster.I can make a drive train case that will bolt to the engine case much like the primary drive on the bike and use tapered roller bearings on the prop shaft. I'm thinking 1 1/4" shaft. This set up will also allow the stator to run in oil for cooling. I guess taking some time off the project helped. Thanks to Big Lar for the nuge..... > > > pp > >

Howard has a big following there. This year it payed off big for him. As he approached the finish line, the kids were cheering wildly for their hero and he managed to summon one final surge of energy and for the first time win over his lead dog by one second. His lead dog is another Viet Vet. What a blast it all is. Of course Howard's greatest race is against the all pervading darkness which it's easy for the handicapped kids to fall into as well. He gives them all hope. Kirk Do not archive

Another Vietnam Vet that he went to school with. He even wears a t-shirt that says" Leader Dog". He is a darn good runner also. They have a leash that attaches between them and when there is a crack or something in the the road he will say" Break" . That way Howard knows and can adjust his awareness for a change in texture or feel. Quite fascinating to see them run. They also run on the local gravel roads as a final prep for the race. Howard used to run along side their van as his son drove but he hit too many tree limbs and mailboxes as his son would get distracted. By the way, he lost his sight in Vietnam as a result of a land mine. He wanted the VA to give him money for a track that this company would build. The VA didn't think it was a good idea that he go out in the field by himself. He said he didn't think it was a good idea that he got his eyes blowed out either . Think he finally got some money from them. Think the DAV helped him with that. Anyway, we came up with the idea for his track. Lot of interesting stories about his running. Kirk Do not archive

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Chuck Davis - Comcast" <davis207@comcast.net> Bill, Terry & others, Sorry to hear the regional fly-in was cancelled. However, I am still planning to make at least one day of the Chapter 240 fly-in on the 6/7th, most likely the 7th. My chapter (176 - Trenton, NJ) is having our annual picnic on the 6th, plus the wife has activities planned that preclude a full day's absence. I drove to this event a year or 2 ago, and it was a great gathering. I'm hoping to see some other Kolbs this time. Anyone who's planning to attend, let me know and we can try and hook up.
