Thanks guys for you input, it has been very helpful.
I have decided to take this opportunity to do a good bit of testing and may not
find a better location for the VGs than the consensus opinion of 11" from the
leading edge. I will document minimum take-off speed in 3 point stance per Jack
Hart's recommendation before VGs and then at each location I try with the VGs
and will report back all the data. To get the most accurate IAS reading I will
set the pitot tube level with the aircraft in 3 point stance. Any deviation
from this will result in an airspeed inaccuracy, always on the low side, as
a function of the cosine of that deviation angle. More specifically, the corrected
IAS would be the actual IAS divided by the cosine of that deviation angle.
Admittedly, at small angles the inaccuracy is very small but it does not hurt
to control what variables you can.
Afterwards, I will add the VGs just forward of the ailerons and see if this makes
any difference(subjective) in roll control/response. I will then add VGs to
the vertical stabilizer just before the rudder and test again. Then on the underside
of the horizontal stabilizer just before the elevator and test again.
As some of you suggested, this should be a fun exercise and hopefully result in
some worthwhile empirical data.
Off to the airport.

Thom:
An old gentleman by the name of Steve Whitman told me to cut
the pitot tube at a 45 deg angle. Then, at extreme angles
of attack, I would still get an accurate reading. When
asked what he did for a static pressure source, Mr Whitman
replied, "Right out of the back of the instrument." He
said, "What difference does it make what the numbers are?"
He told me to check stall speed and it would always stall at
that indicated speed no matter how accurate or inaccurate it
was.
I believe the Firestar was debuted at Sun and Fun 1985,
which was held in March of that year. If you built your
Firestar in 1984, you have a very special one.
1984 was the year of the Ultrastar, Kolb's ultimate model at
that time. No other ultralight, at that time, could come
close to the performance of that little airplane.
Oshkosh 1985 was the first showing of the Firestar at that
show. Homer Kolb's Firestar won Oshkosh Grand Champion
Ultralight. It was crashed at Oshkosh 1989 by Dick Rahill.
That was the year I flew my Firestar to Oshkosh. I had
just landed when the Firestar crashed directly behind me.
The ultralight pattern that year consisted of a sharp 45 deg
turn to touch down from base, around a very large bushy
tree. Dick had been chasing me around the pattern for some
time when the accident happened. Dick got a little too slow
with a little too much aileron just prior to touch down.
The Original Firestar, as it is referred to today, would
normally stall at 25 mph. This was verified with a Winter
venturi operated slow speed airspeed indicator, normally
used in sail planes. These are extremely accurate ASI's.
They do not use a static pressure source in combination with
a pitot tube, but a venturi.
BTW: The Ultrastar also stalled at 25 mph using the same
Winter Venturi ASI to verify. Why not? It used the same
wing and weighed approximately the same.
For what it is worth,

Greeting folks.
Back home and back to work on the Mark III Xtra. Got
the breaks, lines, and seats installed, and started
mating the nose pod to the cage. After mixing with
that for a while I figured best go and look at the
manual to see if what I think and what it says are
close. Well my manual/s has nothing in it about the
pod to cage mating,, nada!! Well not letting that
inconvenience stop me I did some drilling, and got it
mated with screws, its "on" looking *right*. But I
sure would like some feedback. So if anyone has any
photo's about how the nose pod is attached/installed
including the windshield I would appreciate it.
Another question that I have is,, has anyone built a
skylight at the top of the cage instead of the half
ribs streamlining or whatever its called?
I was sitting inside yesterday thinking if a big lexan
window would not be the way to go???
Nice to see familiar names ones again.

Well that sounds interesting John.
what is the route of flight. My M3X should be done by
then (knock on wood, or my head), I may wanna do it
too. I took a bunch of photo's up there while I was
doing my bush flying, and I'll post them if there is
any interest. As I have flown practically every part
of Alaska (excluding the southern parts) I can
suggest some really great vistas. What do you figure
it will cost?

Hi Paul.
You are going with the Kolbra, very nice. Its one
sharp looking bird.
How did the engine project end up?
As for Alaska the flying as usual was hard work. I am
ever more convinced that guys over 50 should find
somewhere else to fly for a living. Loading the Piper
Lance with 1000 pounds, flying the route, and then
unloading it 3-4 times a day is hard work. I think I
spent at least 40% of the time in IMC and another 30%
in near IMC.
I don't think I got the energy to contract out again
up there, but that's also what I said 10 years ago
when I was much younger. :-)
For the time being I am happy to be back home working
on the Kolb, and do an occasional charter in my
Sierra. I sure would like to be done building it.

Dear Craig,
I would be VERY interested in purchasing an engine cowling for my Mark IIIXtra.
I wonder how many others on the list would be interested? Any idea of the price
that you would need to charge?
My brother, who is building a Corby Starlet and just purchased a cowling for his
plane, was very impressed with your work. We think that the cowling cleans
up the esthetic look of the Kolb dramatically, not to mention any performance
enhancements. I hope your testing goes well.

I was thinking about putting some solar film across the upper fourth of my
windshield to keep the sun's glare out, and keep it from getting too hot in
the summer, it is already a solar magnet.
If you are in Southern Arizona, you might want to tint a skylight if you
put one in, because if Tennessee can be too hot, I bet S. Ariz. can be
hotter...

Subject: | Flight testing the VG's |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <rwpike@charter.net>
Just got back from some more flight testing of the vortex generator
installation and thought I would pass along what I have learned, since I
have had some more folks contacting me about them...
Now have 56 vg's total, stall behavior power on and off with no flaps is
about the same as before it had vg's, except it flies slower and a higher
deck angle. Stalls power of and off were normal, but with a slight tendency
to fall off to the left, I guess because that's where my weight is?
Stall with flaps is different. I have my flap mechanism such that I can
have 10 degrees, 20 degrees 30 degrees and 35 degrees. At ten and 20
degrees, the only thing you notice is that the airplane stalls gradually
more nose up in the power off attitude as you add flaps, it seems that the
angle relative to the horizon is about a level deck angle at stall. Stall
is consistently at 20 -21 mph indicated, and as near as I can figure, that
is somewhere between 27 and 30 actual.
With 30 and 35 degrees of flaps, my airspeed indicator reveals a
shortcoming, it will not read low enough to tell me what is really
happening at the stall, and things happen a bit different than before.
I was at altitude practicing minimum speed landings, power off descents
at 45 indicated, full flaps, then a healthy application of aft stick to
arrest the descent and maintain level flight. The airspeed indicator would
steadily fall to 20 indicated and then stop at 20, but I felt subjectively
that the airplane was still slowing down, things just sounded and felt like
it was. After 2 or 3 seconds of this perceived slowing, I would get a clean
sharp break and the nose would pitch down about 15 -25 degrees, it was
obvious the airplane had quit flying. No tendency to fall off on a wing.
Releasing the aft stick pressure gave an immediate recovery. So the stall
break was sharper than with no flaps, or with ten or 20 degrees of flaps,
but not alarming, it was just obvious that I had gotten all it had, period.
Something else that is different is that just before the full flap power
off stall you almost need to start applying forward stick, the airplane
begins to act like it would like to nose up.
I was able to slow flight at 30 indicated doing brisk aileron turns, using
healthy applications of aileron and enough rudder to keep the yaw string
centered, and the airplane felt fairly solid.
Climb at full power timed for one minute is 900 feet/min, maximum speed
seems to be down by about 3 mph but cruise is still the same as before.
Shot two landings maintaining 45 down final, full flaps, power off all the
way to touchdown is a bit tricky. The second approach I kept about 32-3500
rpm on final until the flare and that was easier. Did wheel landings both
times, touchdown at or less than 30 indicated.
Very satisfied with the VG results.

Does anyone on the list have a Bing 84 carb in good shape that they'd be
interested in selling fairly cheaply, or even better, willing to lend to me
for a couple of weeks? I'm trying to help a friend diagnosis some temp
troubles he's having and it's one way we could eliminate some variables.

Ron/Gang:
Haven't gotten that far in planning, but it will be up one
way and down the other. Both up and back will be either the
ALCAN or ALCAN/Stewart-Cassiar Highway. I have flown both.
Fuel can be a problem on the Stewart-Cassiar Hwy,
especially between Dease Lake and Smithers, BC. Fuel is
available at Stewart in cans, i.e., auto fuel from the local
service station. The man that owns the service station also
provides fuel in drums at the airport, but you have to buy a
whole drum whether you need it or not. I want to go to
Stewart-Hyder and see the bears if we are returning around
the first of Aug. If not, I would still like to fly that
route to land at Stewart, just for the experience. There
are some beautiful mountains and glaciers between Mezedian
and Stewart. Also have the Salmon Glacier just north of
Hyder, the world's 5th largest.
Have no idea what it will cost. My biggest expense will be
fuel. Next will be chow. Thirdly, will be an occasional
motel and shower. I think you could easily spend $2,000.00
for a 30 day trip roughing it the way I go. If you spend
every night in a motel, it is going to cost a lot more, if
you can find the motels.
This is a pay as you go type operation. Strictly informal,
go and do what you want to do. If you get tired of the
group, go by yourself, etc. When we get to Alaska, I am
sure there are places that every individual wants to see and
do. For me, I want to go back to the North Slope, probably
fly back to Barrow, and for sure, spend a day or two with
the Helmericks at Colville Village, 48 miles NW of Dead
Horse. I also have a good friend in Wiseman that I will
want to visit and another in North Pole. Hopefully, my
buddy in North Pole can fix us up with some transportation
and logistics which we will need while in the Fairbanks area.
I haven't flown the Katmai Peninsula. Would like to fly
down to Homer and also Seward and Valdez.
It is always a challenge to fly to Alaska, primarily the
weather and the distance. Doing the trip in a Kolb makes it
that much more special..........
Everybody is welcome. We leave 1 July 2004.

(2) 120 & (2) 125 main jets,
(2) 2.70 & (2) 2.66 needle jets, plus two new gaskets & 2 needle clips.
Make me an offer if you can use them.

Clay,
I do plan to sell the cowlings, and in different kit versions. one where you would
get the carbon fiber pieces and figure out the hardware your self or two
a kit with the hardware including camlocks to hold the cowling in place, and camlocks
to hold the inspection door on as well as the tower that holds the oil
cooler, oil tank, and the radiator with the formed radiator hoses so there are
no copper elbows and 45's with all those heater hose clamps. And the tower by
its self for those who don't want the cowling but just want to lose a little
weight and have a nice radiator oil tank oil cooler set up. I first want to test
it to see how it performs. my first flight will be December 17. the carbon
fiber parts will be around $2000.00.
thanks for the interest.
today I riveted the rudder to the bird, bolted the horizontal surfaces and hung
the wings put the finished cowling and I must admit this is one of the prettiest
Kolbs I've seen. I know that John H has nick named his plane------My wife
has nick named mine the (F#*
in air plane) she says she wants her hubby back. won't be long now.

Dear Craig,
I would be VERY interested in purchasing an engine cowling for my Mark IIIXtra.

John/Ron/Gang:
<<Alaska route .. up and back will be either the ALCAN or
ALCAN/Stewart-Cassiar Highway. .. Fuel can be a problem on the
Stewart-Cassiar Hwy .. go to Stewart-Hyder and see the bears .. buddy in
North Pole can fix us up with some transportation and logistics which we
will need while in the Fairbanks area... leave 1 July 2004.>>
We second all of John's suggestions about places to visit in Alaska.
Betty & I are not wedded to any route but suggest we use the Flathead
valley here as an assembly point. We have beds for 8 guests and serve
world famous Kuffel Kakes in the morning.
Then it is an easy hop across Marias Pass and up the east side of the
Rockies to the Alaska Highway. (Don't call it the ALCAN within hearing
of a Canuck, them's fight'n words in the North West Territories 8
).
Think it would be better to take the Calgary/Edmunton/Alaska Highway
route up. Then people will have had more experience with terrain and
conditions before they tackle the more challenging Cassiar.
We also have friends in both Fairbanks and Anchorage who will be able to
provide the group with logistical support.
