John H.
Thanks for the Firestar history. I did not build this aircraft and the previous
owner does not know who did nor did the owner previous to him, and that is as
far back as we were able to trace this bird. There is no documentation at all
on this aircraft and I was told that it was an 84 model but did not know the
history and can not find the serial number. Can you tell me where to look for
the serial number on early Firestars? I would like to get a set of plans for
this or similar aircraft, just in case.
As I thought of the idea you mentioned of cutting the pitot tube at an angle I
realized that the vertical angle mis-alignment in many situations is likely to
be less a factor than the airflow mis-alignment due to cross winds, at least
while on the ground. In any case, you are correct in the statement about whatever
the IAS says under x condition will always be repeated under the same circumstances.
BTW, before it started raining yesterday I got the opportunity to do
two slowly accelerating take-off runs w/o VGs and both times it jumped off the
ground at 32mph IAS at a take-off weight of 537# with full up elevator. Next
time weather permits I will check the IAS accuracy with GPS headwind and tailwind
average at 35mph IAS. And I will start installing the VGs and do some more
take-off speed tests.
I'll keep the list posted on my results.

Tom/All:
And I'll second your suggestions.
Whitefish is a great place to meet up. It is on the way to
Alaska for anyone coming from the SE, E, and even folks from
the SW and W. hehehe
Friends in Fairbanks and Anchorage are worth their weight in
gold when you are flying a little airplane, all you have is
what you have with you in the airplane, and once on the
ground you are a ground pounder, 2.5 mph.
This flight is looking better all the time. I now have some
experience flying with others, i.e., John Williamson for a
couple days in July and the "five musketeers" on the Kitty
Hawk/London flight for three days. After having flown cross
countries solo for the last 19 years, it take a little time
to adjust to all the company. However, company is great
when one has a problem along the way, when the weather turns
sour, and someone else to share the fun and excitement of
doing long cross countries in Kolb or other makes of little
airplanes.
I'm ready to go!

Thom/All:
Early Firestars had no serial number.
Curious why you used full up elevator for take off?

I too would like to have a pair of the 4130 gear legs. (actually the ones
that I have are fine, buttttttt, I would still like a pair) The big problem
facing most of us it the difficulty of ordering the 4130, making the welds
for the wheels, then sending it off to somewhere to hopefully be done
properly and then having them shipped back. I don't suppose that you or your
brother Jim, would be interested in making a few of them, sending them off
to be treated and then to us? Seems to me to be the perfect solution.

John H, Tom K and all,
I can't find half the places you name on a map.
I have been playing with a route to get me around where I need to go. Here
is what it looks like:

I am only going as far north as Fairbanks then turning south.

Hi Larry C/All:

Call Aircraft Spruce. You'll have it in a couple days.
They have a 800 number.

Take the old gear leg/axle socket off. Measure the angle
and length of leg you would like. Weld an axle socket
(tube) to the end of the gear leg. Do all the wheel
alignment and bolt drilling.

Get the address of Braddock Metal Treating off the internet.
Use Google. Send the gear legs to them UPS. Insert a
note on what you want done, heat treat to RC 48, and return
to you by UPS.
When you get them back, clean'em up, prime and paint. :-)
Not all that much to it if you really want a pair.

Kolb does offer spring steel gear for the MKIII as a $395 option. They are
only app. two inches longer than the stock gear. If you want some thing else
you need to make your own.

I put a set of over load springs on my ultrastar after installing Subaru
engine. they worked great. never bent the landing gear after that.there are
a few pictures on my web site Http://soobydoonc.tripod.com Look on page
two for the ultrastar photos. This may give you some other ideas to work
with.
Randy sold the soobydoo and I sure miss it.

John I went over to your site and watched the movies.
Did you try both engines on your kolbra?
How was the Verner?
I saw it on static display at Copper State, couldn't
make up my mind about it. Looked kinda rough built.
