I got some photos "from a friend" of the Barona UL park after the fires
passed through. What a mess, aircraft, hangers, and trailers burned to a
crisp, very little left. Donnie Ecker was one of the folks whos plane (New
Avenger) was melted into a puddle.

Jim/All:
First, let me say that the MKIII/MKIIIX built to standards
per plans and instructions from Kolb are more than strong
enough to do the job of everyday flying, good and bad days.
Second, I think a lot of people get the wrong idea when they
see me making changes to my MK III. My MK III is one of a
kind. I guess you could compare it to NASCAR and the family
sedan, or international rally cars and a VW bug, or a Toyota
pickup on the streets and one racing in the Baja 1000. I
needed a much stronger airplane than one that came right out
of the box because I was flying into a lot of unknown
territory, i.e., wind, weather, remoteness, rough fields,
etc., on the first Alaska flight. I didn't know how strong
to build it to survive, so we built it very strong.
Third, what Brother Jim and I learned during the building,
flying, breaking, repair and modification of the Ultrastar
and Firestar, was used to build and modify the MKIII to
better its chances of flying me around the border of the
Continental US and up to Barrow, Alaska (only made it to
Dead Horse the first trip, but the initial turn around point
was to have been Barrow). My MK III was SN: M3-011, the
first batch of MKIIIs to be built in Jan/Feb 1991. Jim was
already in PA helping Homer Kolb at the factory and I went
up the first of Feb 1991. I worked in the shop, for a
month, during the day helping Kolb, and at night Jim and I
designed and built the fuselage and most 4130 components and
the 25 gal aluminum fuel tank. Each day Homer
enthusiastically followed our progress and blessed each and
every modification that we made. As we discovered ways to
improve on the very first original factory MKIII design, by
speeding up the manufacture of kits, by lightening the
aircraft in some areas and adding strength and weight in
others, we built Miss P'fer. A lot of the mods that we came
up with were incorporated in all the Kolb models produced by
old Kolb and new Kolb today.
I think of significant importance, we never changed the
outside dimensions of fuselage or flying/control surfaces.
Yes, I was a test pilot, just like everyone else that builds
and flies their creation for the first time. My flights
were and still are test flights. We have come a long way
with old Miss P'fer. She has proven to be an outstanding
airplane. But she is still just a big ole ultralight with a
lot of capability. She gets me there and brings me home.
There was nothing wrong with the original Firestar 5 rib
wing if flown the way it was designed to be flown. I have
said many times that I didn't fly the way the airplanes were
designed to be flown and had a failure. The major fix in
that case was fix the pilot. I think we did that about
March 1990.
Yes, I changed the inside of the MK III wing some to insure
I made it to Barrow, Alaska, and home. I made it.
Jim C, I guess you have already guessed which way I would go
with the MKIII wings, 1/2 and 3/4" angle aluminum on the
first four outboard ribs, top and bottom, front and rear.
The noses of the other 6 main ribs. Additional 1/2" bracing
of the leading edge of the wing, inboard and outboard.
Additional bracing of the bowtip at 45 and 90 deg from the
leading edge. I used 1/2" on the bowtip with .025 or .032
aluminum web to tie the top and bottom of the 1/2" braces
together.
Haven't changed the shape or size of any wing or control
surface. Did experiment with the horizontal stabilizer
incidence and off set of vertical stabilizer, based on what
I learned from flying the factory original MK III. Flew
most of the initial 40 hours off it while I was at the plant
during Feb 91.
As the builder, I upped the GW on my MKIII to 1200 lbs based
on changes we made that were blessed by Homer Kolb.
Sorry for the long explanation, but felt I needed to share
some of the history of my airplane with you all. I can
assure you I had plenty air time to insure I knew what
needed fixing before Jim and I and the factory came up with
a fix. All our fixes have worked to include the first
installation of a 912 on a MK III.
The other major mods were spring steel main and tail gear,
seating, the original and now current factory production of
dual controls, infinite pitch trim control, enclosing the
upper rear fuselage area, and right seat flying. :-) I
didn't mess with the original factory throttle position.
I won't ever tell someone not to make changes to their
airplane, whether I approve of what they or doing or not.
That is their business. I might tell them that I would not
do it that way if I think they are going to hurt themselves.
I do not expect everyone to approve of what I am doing or
not doing. That is my right as the individual builder and
flyer. All I can do is share what I have found to work for me.

Interesting Discussions on VW engines I have given
consideration to full VW on my Slingshot. Great
Plains advised me all their VW engines were too heavy
for Kolb aircraft. Obviously there are sucessful VW
engines on Kolb aircraft. Any comments on VW engines
on Slingshot would be interesting. The issue comes
down to dollars.

Can you put a 912 Rotax on a Slingshot? The reduction drive VW is going to
weigh app. 17lbs more than a 912. If there is any one of the big kolbs that
might have a problem the Slingshot might be it but the VW on my MKIIIc
isn't. At 554lbs my MKIIIc is a bit heavy but most of it isn't due to the
engine, in fact there are 912 powered MKIIIs that are heavier. I also have a
drawing of a modification to the Kolb cage that would allow the VW engine to
be mounted lower (bigger concern) and eliminates the 5lb VW to Rotax mount
adapter and maybe 2lbs from the cage. So are they too heavy, you have to
decide that on you own for your plane. Talk to Steve Bennet at Great Plains,
tell him you talked to Rick Neilsen. I was the one that flew my flew my
MKIIIc to Oshkosh this summer and talked to him about it. Steve doesn't like
to recommend a VW for a plane that doesn't have the manufacture's
recommendation. New Kolb will not recommend the VW engine because there
isn't a package that will give reliable results. The quote I got from the
Big Guy at Kolb is there are too many people that have trouble putting the
kit together and he feels the VW would be over the head of most people.

Can't comment about performance on a Kolb but a 1/2-VW on a 290# N3-Pup if
you got 150 foot/minute climb you were in nose bleed country. Had to
adjust the mixture during takeoff roll and climb out to get that. Didn't
like the ride. I'm confident to say a Rotax 377 would be much better.
Commenting on redrives, the power pulses on a 1/2-VW are very sharp thus
most redrives will not hold up for long. They do make a unit for the
4-cylinder VW. The links below take you to one manufacturer of VW
redrives. They also resell through Great Plains Aircraft which sells VW
based engine solutions. I've seen the difference in performance between
the same plane with a 4 cylinder VW and then again with a Valley redrive on
it. What a difference it made. Sounded good and kicked butt.

there. And I am told by one owner it is really to
much engine for the plane he had the S 100 HP

This is the reduction drive I have on my airplane. Gene Smith at Valley
makes it. They also own Culver Props. Great Plains and the guy at altimizer
also sell what appears to be the same redrive. I have talked at length with
the guy at altimizer and I don't trust him he is big on promises and his
claims are? Great Planes seems to be a much more reputable company.

It all started when I got my repairman's certificate. The Mark III needed
an annual so I went to the FSDO and got myself certified. The Mark III was
a year in the field and pretty grimy, and a spot or two of rust showing
through the primer where I was ignorant to think I didn't need paint. (Was
that in the construction manual somewhere, that Poly-Fiber epoxy primer was
sufficient?) Anyway, the guys at the field helped me take the wings off and
Jim Hubbs was kind enough to let me store them in his hangar and I trailered
the bird home to do a little cleaning and maybe an enhancement or two. It
was kind of neat to have the plane in my garage again, I could go out at 2AM
and sand a little, or just look at it and think of how it would work with a
new cockpit enclosure, or where I'd mount the transponder. I took off the
radiator and oil cooler because I was going to remount them the way John
Hauck and John Bickham did (saw that at the reunion). I took out the fuel
tanks because I'm building a new tank and needed to clean out the cockpit
and get some more paint in there. Needed to clean up around the engine
mount, so I took off the throttle and choke cables. Fuel line, wiring
harness, instrument panel, seats, BRS, doors, windshield, fuel pump, ELT, uh
oh....
I don't have an airplane anymore, just a big pile. How did this happen? I
might as well pull the engine, I've been meaning to change the thrust line -
Hey John, did you ever figure out what was best? We might as well start a
thread about P-factor and rudder trim again, looks like it will be a while
before I'm flying.
Another lesson. Be careful about taking a perfectly good airplane apart. I
tell ya, Lar, when you get it together, you be real careful before you take
it home again.

Nope ...I guess I'm the only one who would know what a Twilly is, as it is
the name that I applied to a flying toy that I have a patent for, but have not
pursued sufficiently to make it a commercial success (still have 8 years left
on the patent though)
But JH, your inquiring mind and its scientific processing is evident in your
google and dictionary search ...and Beauford's technique for bringing it up
was truly creative...as he always is.
In a nutshell, with the aid of a rubber band and a stick, you shoot this
puppy up in the air 150 ft, like a rifling rocket and it reaches the apex and
naturally pops a couple wings out like a helicopter and it spins straight
down...appearing like a sky flower...probably should have called it that. But I
was
close to calling it "Slick Willy" and sending one to the President, just before
the monica thing flowered...er...should I say cigarred...and decided not to,
as it might not have been as appreciated at the white house as I thought such a
name could have been.
I'm gonna launch a few from the Firestar when I get a chance and see how
close to a target I can get. That will approximate the parachute bombs dropped
on
the pacific islands by low flying B-25s during the big one
pretty big nutshell, huh...sorry.

Hi Listers!
A number of Listers have been asking for some Matronics Email List online
chat and NOW ITS HERE! Over the last couple of days I've set up a nifty
web-based Chat site here on the Matronics systems. No special programs to
download; all you need is a late model web browser like Internet Explorer
or Netscape with a java plugin. I would recommend downloading the latest
Java plugin if you experience any problems getting the page to come
up. Here's a link to the Sun Java download
website. http://java.com/en/index.jsp Look for the green box with the
yellow arrow in the upper right corner. Before you bother, though, just
try you browser because it'll probably just work.
Each Email List on Matronics has its own "Room" and all rooms can easily be
accessed from the same client. In the Email List URL Trailer at the bottom
of each List message, you'll find the Link to this List's specific Chat
Room. Just click on the Link, and then type in your name or email address
in the User Name box. Try to use a name or email address that the other
Listers know you by. You'll find me lurking around the various List chat
rooms as "MattDralle".
There's a couple of nifty features I'll explain right off. On the main
Chat Window page after you login, you'll see a little icon with a Hammer
and a Screwdriver. This is the Control Panel window. Once the Control
Panel comes up, click on the "Settings" tab. Here you'll find, among other
things, three check boxes to enable sound. Click all three and you'll be
treated to a sound whenever someone enters or leaves the Room, or when
someone sends a message.
The other cool button is the one that has four little arrows pointing to
each of the four corners of the button. This will rip the main Chat window
from the web page and allow you to resize and move it anyway you'd like.
Let's have some fun and get to know one another better using this awesome
new Chat Room! To get started, just click the URL Link below for this
List's specific Chat Room!
