I've seen the engine. It had some promise but due to issues between the
two principle parties development was never fully completed. Story goes
one wanted to ship units the other wanted to finish the refinement before
shipping. Because of this both parted company. I don't recommend
contacting the party at the number provided on link shown. He's a real
hard ass and the problem behind it.
Not to long ago I spoke directly with the other principle and he is willing
to sell the engine he has been doing the development on and the
engineering info for a very reasonable cost. If some one engine orientated
picked this up and finished it, it could turn into a small gold mine. It
has good weight, right HP, reduction drive, charging system and
starter. Just perfect match for tractor style single place planes like
Hipps, N3-Pup, MiniMax, and could even be used on ThunderGull, Titan, maybe
the smaller lighter Kolbs.

Can't comment about performance on a Kolb but a 1/2-VW on a 290# N3-Pup if
you got 150 foot/minute climb you were in nose bleed country. Had to
adjust the mixture during takeoff roll and climb out to get that. Didn't
like the ride. I'm confident to say a Rotax 377 would be much better.
Commenting on redrives, the power pulses on a 1/2-VW are very sharp thus
most redrives will not hold up for long. They do make a unit for the
4-cylinder VW. The links below take you to one manufacturer of VW
redrives. They also resell through Great Plains Aircraft which sells VW
based engine solutions. I've seen the difference in performance between
the same plane with a 4 cylinder VW and then again with a Valley redrive on
it. What a difference it made. Sounded good and kicked butt.

Rick,
Interesting is we both come away with the same perception of the guy from
Altimizer. I just don't get warm fuzzies after talking to him. If his
products were as great as he claims you would see them more widely
used. Counting my fingers.....

During pre-flight testing it became obvious that my Mk3/912's throttle was wa-a-a-y
to quick. Idle was o.k. but the RPMs were up to 4K with the throttle only
1/4 th inch off the stop.
My setup is the standard fail-go arrangement per the plans. It is spring-loaded
to go wide open if the throttle cable is not holding it at idle. The pivot point
for this setup is between the knob on top and the connection to the cable
linkage at the bottom.
I noticed that when the throttle is closed the linkage to the cable the arm at
the bottom is at the beginning of the most effective part of it's arc of travel
(seven o'clock). When you first start to move it you will be getting maximum
movement at the carbs.
My fix was to make a new throttle that puts the arm at the bottom at the nine o'clock
position at idle. The throttle is definitely improved but I am now considering
shortening the bottom arm for even better control of the first part of
throttle movement.
I know I can't be the first one to run into this problem and would appreciate input
from any of you who are flying machines like mine.

I rigged my own throttle, because I wanted to keep the fail-go arrangement
and I wanted to place it on an armrest I made to fit over the rudder cables.
I messed with it to place the arc where I'd get as linear a throttle
response as possible. I have 108 hours on it, and I haven't thought about
it, except to check the connections. I get to full throttle about 3/4 of
the travel.

Good work on doing your solo. Its only the beginning

surprisingly little time).
Your pics remind me of my solo flight. I refused to
let them cut my T shirt, even though it seemed that a
bunch of them led by the Bosses (Msrs Kubly and Stone)
were about to jump me for it. I guess the tradition
was pretty hard to break at the Westborough Airport in

under to make room for a factory, which is closed now.
I didn't know he was going to let me loose solo on
that day.
Being a poor student, and letting go of my sweat shirt
was not going to happen. I did bring in an old T shirt
the following day, and let him write whatever he
wanted on it. It probably was plowed under with the
rest of the things in that old shack. :-)

Subject: | 2003 List Fund Raiser - Please Support Your Lists... |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
During November of each year, I have a voluntary Email List Fund Raiser to
support the continued operation, development, maintenance and upgrade of
the Email Forums sponsored here. Your Contributions go directly into
improvements in the systems that support the Lists and to pay for the
Internet connectivity primarily dedicated to supporting the Lists.
The traffic on the Lists continues to grow and the numbers are nothing
short of impressive! Here are some statistics that show how much traffic
the Lists generated this year alone:
* 11/01/2002 - 10/31/2003
o Web server hits: 10,446,780 (870,565/mo)
o Incoming Email Posts: 58,918 (4,909/mo)
List-related upgrades this year have been plentiful, and List performance
has substantially improved as a result. Upgrades and enhancements this
year have included:
* Internet Connection upgrade to a full, commercial-grade T1 Line!
* New Web Server platform - Dual 3Ghz Xeon with 2Gb Ram and U320 SCSI!
* Upgrade of Email Server platform - Dual 1.7 Ghz Xeon with 1Gb Ram!
* All new SPAM Filtering Appliance - filters about 98% of the SPAM!
* All new, web-base List Chat Room society!
As you can well imagine, this year's upgrades translate into a fair amount
of cash outlay on my part and this annual List Fund Raiser is the sole
means by which I fund these upgrades. Unlike most of the other "list
servers" on the Web these days, I have a strict
*no-commercial-advertisement policy* on the Matronics Lists and associated
List web sites. I was again approached by a number of vendors recently
with advertising deals that have been very tempting. My commitment to
providing a grass-roots, non-commercial environment prevailed,
however! Commercialism on the Internet seems to be increasing
exponentially every year, with more and more SPAM and pop up ads, not to
mention the ever increasing Virus attacks.
My goal with the Matronics List Service is to provide all members
with a commercial-free, virus-free, and high-performance system
with which the may share information, ideas, and camaraderie.
The best news this year is that, with the gracious help of Andy Gold and
The Builder's Bookstore ( http://www.buildersbooks.com ), I have been able
to significantly expand the lineup of fantastic Gift offers to support the
List Fund Raiser! In all, there are eight awesome free gifts this year
ranging from List Archive CD's to Flight Computers with qualifying
Contribution levels. Those great Jeppesen Flight Bags that were so popular
last year are even back! A special thanks goes out to Andy Gold again this
year for his very kind and generous support of the Lists. Thanks Andy, for
these great incentives!!
Over the next month I'll be posting a few reminder messages about the List
Fund Raiser, and I ask for your patience and understanding during the
process. Remember that the Lists are *completely* funded through the
generous Contributions of its members. That's it! There's no support from
a bloated advertising budget or deep pockets somewhere. Its all made
possible through YOUR thoughtful and generous support!
To make your List Contribution using a Visa or MasterCard, PalPal, or with
a personal check, please go to the URL link below. Here you can find
additional details on this year's great free Gifts as well as information
on the various methods of payment. Contributions in the $20, $30, $50,
$75, and $100 range are common. The Contribution web page is kind of long
this year with the details of each of the gifts, so please scroll all the
way down!
SSL Secure Contribution Web Site:
http://www.matronics.com/contributions
I would like to thank everyone who supports the Lists this year! Your
Contributions truly make it all possible!!
Thank you!!

I put a 2x4 under the cross brace that runs between the mains, it is almost
as wide as the bottom of the fuselage so that the load is mostly at the
ends close to the gear, and raise it with a floor jack next to the leg you
want to take out, no problems. Chock the other gear REAL well.

One way is to first take the wings off (one bolt on each side). Use a
canoe mount under the root and tip of each wing. Store the wings safely.
Chock one wheel and tailwheel or place the fuse tube on a support. Next
jack one side up with a hydraulic jack on the inside of the gear leg and
put some stacking planks under the bent wheel. Let down the jack and
carefully place a jackstand under the crossmember inside the gear leg.
Remove some of the planks so the weight of the front half of the plane is
sitting on the jackstand. Do the same to the other side. Remove each
wheel then remove the 1/4" bolt inside the gear leg socket and remove
each leg.
While the weight of the plane is sitting on the jackstands, place
something underneath the front part of the fuse tube just in case the
plane would shift off the jackstand. I have used an upside down milk cart
with a tire on top for cushion.

I've done this several times ;-( . Did it today in fact. I just use a hydraulic
jack on the brace just inside of the gear leg, raise it up a little more than
needed to remove the gear leg. Then lower it onto a jack stand with just a 6"
piece of 2x4 on the top of the jack stand. Repeat for the other leg. I've never
had a problem with this method. Quick and easy.

If you happen to have one of those snug fitting legs....I made a dandy
attachment
for my slide impact gear puller. I welded the appropriate size nut to
the end
of a piece of 1" pipe, drilled a 1/4" hole about 2" from the end. Pops
that
stubborn piece out nice and slick. You do have to jack the plane up quite
a bit to clear the whole arrangement. If you straighten it on a press
use another
piece of 1" pipe on the bent end to yield the most effective leverage while
saving the surface from damage. Carefully mark the top of the bend with
a black marker first. -BB

Yes, they are lighter than that but look at all the junk that's on that
engine. To top it all off its direct drive. These engines normally have a
custom crank shaft that will not except the Gene Smith reduction drive.
Don't buy this engine for a Kolb. The aft CG problem they talk about can be
a problem with the VW and Rotax 912 engines that's why I moved the battery
to the nose cone on my plane. I have a friend that caries a ten pound brick
around with him when he is flying solo in his 912 powered MKIIIc.

Subject: | Re: VW Engines / Vamoose' Landing Gear. |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" <biglar@gogittum.com>
Rick and many others have had excellent results with their 2180cc VW
engines - and those results are proven. I chose to stay with a 2110cc VW
w/re-drive for reasons listed in my website in the engine section. It looks
like I may have been overly cautious, but that's fine, and the power output
(still un-proven) is apparently more than adequate. What does worry me is
engines over 2180cc - I believe that so much metal is removed for crankshaft
and connecting rod clearance, as well as the larger cylinders, that it
affects the stability and rigidity of the crankcase. This is probably ( ! !
! ) not a good thing.
BTW - on the way home from Little Lake II today, I stopped at the A&P's shop
where Vamoose' landing gear is being fabricated. If you asked a tortoise to
swim in molasses in January, you'd have an idea of the
progress...............but it IS being - slowly - moved along, and he is
doing a terrific, meticulous job. I got that un-easy feeling that the
sticker shock is gonna - uh - shock me, but...............?? I took some
pics of it today, and will publish them later - prob'ly tomorrow.

After all that, yer gonna hafta publish an on-line catalog for us, George.

I took some pics of the little doo-hickeys Jim built to support Vamoose
while building the landing gear. Simple, cheap, solid,
secure..................a simple J-hook. I'll see if'n I can't get those
pics published tonight.

OK - as promised, here's a pic of one of the jacking points that A&P Jim Johnson built to support Vamoose while he's building the new landing gear. The pic doesn't show it as well as I'd hoped, and the ones I took today are in the wrong format. Anyway, it's a simple "J" hook with an upper extension that lets you bolt it to the lower wing strut fitting to keep it from rotating, and a lower extension to contact the jack. The nut on the bolt just needs to be on there for security - don't tighten it. The whole thing is simple and strong. See it at: http://www.flyingpics.homestead.com/jackingpoint.html I'll put up a couple more pics a little later. Lar.

I can see future problems with these new pages, so decided to go about it in the old way. One of a kind pics, like the "jacking point" earlier, or 2 more that I've just added will all be listed on their own home page. Picture #2 is the mock-up of the new landing gear that I took today. #3 is the "VaMoose" cartoon, and the logo created for me.............and which I also need more help with. Take a look at them at: http://www.flyingpics.homestead.com/flyingpicshome.html Any artists who can help with that logo, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks Lar. Do not Archive.
